Any US based MNers catch this last night on HBO? It's a documentary about the hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits sitting on shelves all across the US. Many serical rapists could have been stopped if their DNA had been matched sooner.

It just infuriated me to see all these powerful men in the police and justice departments sitting there saying that women are lying about rape, that if they dress or act a certain way then they aren't "righteous" victims. To see these men defend the choice to actively ignore the pain and trauma of these women and deny them justice. It just made me realize how many men just don't care about women. And how the system is set up against us from the start. Seeing how women are treated in court during their rapists trial turned my stomach.

Not sure if it's available online or will be broadcast elsewhere but I would highly recommend it.

Was this the one championed by Mariska Hargitay from SVU? I’d read about it but didn’t realise it had been on. It’s an absolute travesty that these women are being failed and maligned by a rotten system and men who exert their power to deny the truth.

Statistically at least some of those men will be rapists themselves and therefore motivated to ensure rape is as hard to prosecute as possible.

I haven't heard of this before today but I'll definitely be watching it online when I get chance.

I read about it. Not sure I have the stomach to watch at the moment. Such appalling disregard for the victims of sexual crime. Should be criminal behaviour in itself.

Yes, that's the one. Unsurprisingly it's women doing most of the work to get something done about this . One female prosecutor in detroit pushed for the kits to be tested and over 800 serial rapists have been uncovered so far as a result. Just one city. But according to the men in power it's a "low priority" to solve these cases. Shocking.

800 serial? Horrific. It’s a shame that the only reason anyone is listening is because someone famous spoke out. I’m glad she did, I think the fact she’s using her platform for good is fantastic. But the fact it’s needed at all is horrifying.
