They did not consult as promised, they did not discuss. They just decided.

Jennifer James has instructed her solicitors.

Fuck the Labour Party. That is the final nail in the coffin for me. Anyone got any ideas about how best to spoil the ballot next month?

@Popchyk "They were supposed to STFU until after the May elections. What was the point of the whole "We'll report back in June" thing then?"

Are these local elections or internal labour party ones? I feel like I really don't know what is going on!

Truscum · 17/04/2018 19:08

Do you think they released this now as a virtue signal in response to the grassroots conservatives statement against self ID?

Have the conservatives said in any way that they are not for self ID?

Because if they have I will vote for them, hands down. I’m no longer even emotionally conflicted about it.

LassWiADelicateAir · 17/04/2018 19:19

It was originally in the Sex Discrimination Act (Election Candidates) 2002, and then extended in the Equality Act (2010). So actual law

So it is. Extended to 2030 after which AWS will go. As I said I don't support AWS anyway.

OvaHere · 17/04/2018 19:21

The grassroots conservative statement was from last October so it's not related to that.

GenderApostate · 17/04/2018 19:28

All this being a precursor to dropping AWS (in a ‘look what you made me do’ kind of way) did cross my mind tbh.

OlennasWimple · 17/04/2018 19:38

As I said I don't support AWS anyway.

I see them as a necessary evil (because in an ideal world we wouldn't need this sort of engineering to get anywhere near to 50:50 elected
representation), but if we are going to have them, they should at least be fit for purpose

AFAIK the rules around who can be a Women's Officer are purely subject to internal party policy, rather than legislation

Popchyk · 17/04/2018 19:51

Italian, local council elections in England and Wales. On May 3rd.

The Labour Party put off an announcement last month about their current position on men being able to self-ID onto All-Women Shortlists. They stated that they would give clarification in June.

There was the general feeling they didn't want to risk people being pissed off with Labour at the polls in May.

mrsreynolds · 17/04/2018 19:55

Ffs.

Just need to decide how to spoil my ballot

BarrackerBarmer · 17/04/2018 20:10

I'll be spoiling mine with #SexNotGender

KatherinaMinola · 17/04/2018 20:15

Yes, that's more mature than my idea, Barracker.

50ShadesOfEarlGrey · 17/04/2018 20:15

I am fluctuating between anger and sadness. I so hoped that the announced delay was because they were re thinking their stance on this. I had taken on board that this might just have been a STFU policy to get over the local elections, but was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt one last time.

I don’t think I can vote Tory, and there is no one else. Women are being blocked from voting, in the sufferage anniversary year. Fuck, I’ve decided. I’m Angry.

Candidates in elections DO see spoilt ballot papers. They are usually shown them by the returning officer.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/04/2018 20:18

www.votenone.org.uk/protest_votes_count.html

This is an interesting read on how to spoil your ballot correctly so that it is counted as a protest vote.

OlennasWimple · 17/04/2018 20:22

Here's another reason why I can't vote Labour: the MP who was appointed to head Parliamentary investigation into anti-Semitism reported yesterday in Parliament that his wife has received rape threats from Momentum members, and threats have been made against the rest of his family, including his son being caught in an apparent swatting incident Angry Angry

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 17/04/2018 20:24

Is it true that miranda yardley is a Labour candidate for some elected position?

50ShadesOfEarlGrey · 17/04/2018 20:29

*suffrage

BarrackerBarmer · 17/04/2018 20:30

The votenone website is suggesting ways to ensure a vote is counted as a protest vote and not a mistake. Which is valid.

However writing "none" is not the only text that would count as a protest vote - particularly if there is a publicity campaign around election time.

If significant numbers of voters are spoiling their ballot with a clear message it will be noted.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/04/2018 20:32

Apologies, I should have made it clearer that I was raising awareness about the general "rules" to ensure it was recorded as a protest vote, and that the word "none" is not important for this.

Freshlylaidterf · 17/04/2018 20:32

ItsAllGoingToBeFine
I am so doing this! Thanks for link

BarrackerBarmer · 17/04/2018 20:34

sorry - thanks!

This popped up on another thread a while back and the votenone message was presented rather strongly as the only proper way to spoil your vote, which of course it isn't.

There's a good opportunity to make a political point if its planned well.

Weezol · 17/04/2018 21:02

50Shades ItsAll Thank you very much. That information has been really reassuring.
I'll be voting NONE this time around.

Weezol · 17/04/2018 21:04

So, what could we put as a unified action? Sex Not Gender?

Any suggestions?

HopScotchy · 17/04/2018 21:09

I've been Labour my whole adult life. I'm still a member. I've been critical off and on when required. Nothing has ever made me rethink my politics wholesale before but this has. I don't think Labour understand how many women feel about this. It's not like the usual 'broad church' fighting. I'm rethinking everything and if Labour are not behind women I feel no affinity to them whatsoever despite being a working class trade unionist.

BeUpStanding · 17/04/2018 21:11

Thanks for that link about how to make a protest vote be recorded, good to know.

HopScotchy · 17/04/2018 21:14

By supporting the legal challenge financially. Which I have and will continue to do as needed. This is a situation requiring courts, they are ignoring anything and everything else aggressively.

jachshund · 17/04/2018 21:23

I abhor the idea that there is nothing more to life than money but given the events of the past year I can’t say I would ever vote Labour again.

It’s just unbelievable that we are even having to debate the idea of a capricious teenage boy being not only a woman but their voice in a future labour government.

It is the end of femininism and of any meaningful idea of woman. Just insane.
