Have you discussed the issue with her, or does she think it's a storm in a teacup?

No I haven't. I'm pretty sure she'd think it was all a bit hypothetical and a fuss over nothing at the local level, so I'm biding my time. And I don't see why my granddaughter should miss out on what should be a positive experience. Experience has taught me to pick my battles.

Anyway, I see withdrawing is the coward's way out. We all know that girls are going to withdraw from competitive sports if this nonsense carries on; surely fighting for girls'/women's rights from within the organisation is a better strategy?

SmurfNotTerff · 17/04/2018 10:44

JHB did say she would have signed the petition if she'd known about it. Its not too late, so please can someone tweet it to her

Winewinewinegin · 17/04/2018 10:45

The reasons why girls and women may feel unable/unwilling to share certain spaces/services with those born male should not be so easily dismissed as 'bigotry'. Those who have contributed to a climate where this is even possible must consider the wider, serious implications...

This.

We cannot be creating safeguarding policies (or law) based on the fictional idea that because a male says he feels female he becomes exactly the same as a girl.

Telling people this is a bigoted position is clearly wrong and just plain dangerous from a safeguarding perspective.

Not because people think trans people are dangerous or bad or shouldn't have rights. But because we have policies based on biology not how people feel.

Someone with a penis doesn't have the right to go in girls showers or sleep in their tents just because he feels like it. That should be bloody obvious to anyone responsible for child safeguarding.

R0wantrees · 17/04/2018 10:46

The belief that discussing/debating issues about girls and women's rights requires two sides: one representing TRA and the other women's concerns is itself damaging. It reinforces the narrative that women's concerns are 'anti-trans'.
This has been exploited by some TRA and absorbed by many (innocently) within the transgender community and beyond
The challenge is to a policy which is flawed.
It is refreshing that in this segment Nicola Taylor's position was positioned as it should be in relationship to the organisation with a contentious policy.
Focus must now be on how this and other similar policies and legislation have come to be constructed.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 17/04/2018 10:49

Not them Mel. The prolific trans tweeters. Not naming them, it just encourages the fuckers to act all victimised

RosenbergW · 17/04/2018 10:52

Focus must now be on how this and other similar policies and legislation have come to be constructed.
Agree. Exposing the motivations and tactics of the activists pushing these policies to people only just becoming aware will blow their minds. And that will bring the house of cards down.

Popchyk · 17/04/2018 10:57

And on that point, do you think they actually have jobs?

No. I don't. Not paying jobs anyways.

Which is why the trans bandwagon is so important to these people.

They are hoping that it will open up consultancy opportunities (and for that, they mean talking about how hard they've had it and how inspirational and fabulous they are) for the unemployable.

JHB tweeted this about IW and a TRA tweet (below)

And this is what happens to anyone who dares to question what this tiny minority of militant transgender activists is doing. Unless you agree with every word they say & give in to their demands, you are transphobic. Rdiculous & very damaging to transgender people.

@IndiaWilloughby

India Willoughby Retweeted Giuliana

I sense @JuliaHB1 sees trans people as crackpots. Definitely not women. Her first words to me yesterday ((pre-show) were “What are you guys upset about?” She knows the nuance of the word. The stuff on @MumsnetTowers is disgusting. Maybe the police will take action for hate speech

Giuliana
@Giuliana_London

@JuliaHB1 @asknic @talkradio #forallgirls

So, Julia Hartley-Brewer, it appears you want to vomit your despicable transphobic comments all over the airwaves without comment.

To say that no transphobia on mumsnet is perverse. I and others supplied you with countless examples.

JHB can take abuse but so many women are not in a position to do so.

nemno · 17/04/2018 11:33

That last line is me of course!

BeUpStanding · 17/04/2018 11:52

OMG @Popchyk! That's it! You're so right... I saw a tweet yesterday from someone suggesting JHB should pay Guilina (the prolific TA tweeter with a flowerheadress) for the time Guilina was kindly spending educating JHB on transgenderism. At the time I was completely bewildered as to how on earth that thought could cross anyone's mind but I get it now! Wow. That's quite genius.... Create an ideology; insult, threaten and defame anyone who refuses to agree with you; then suggest they pay you to 'educate' them on what they need to do to stop you threatening & insulting them. Wow.

"Create an ideology; insult, threaten and defame anyone who refuses to agree with you; then suggest they pay you to 'educate' them on what they need to do to stop you threatening & insulting them. Wow."

That is exactly what they are doing.

I did have a look at the social media accounts of some of the loudest TRAS a while back. They often sticky their Paypal details so that you can transfer cash to them direct. Or they tweet some sob story and then some sap will ask for their Paypal details. Or they will be direct: "I really hate to do this, guys, but I need food" and then include their Paypal details (in their dead names usually).

Look at all the gofundme's these people set up supposedly for surgery or taxis.

It is quite the "industry". And they all want a part of it.

Like the California gold rush.

Trousersdontmakemeaman · 17/04/2018 12:30

Just announced
In June our Chief Executive @JulieBentley will be stepping down to become the chief executive at @ActnForChildren. Julie's been a passionate champion for our girls and volunteers - we wish her all the best in her new role! www.girlguiding.org.uk/what-we-do/our-stories-and-news/news/farewell-to-chief-executive-julie-bentley/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social-media&utm_campaign=julieannouncement

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 17/04/2018 12:30

Great radio piece. I have written to Girl Guides as a result.

LangCleg · 17/04/2018 12:39

In June our Chief Executive @JulieBentley will be stepping down to become the chief executive at @ActnForChildren.

It's like a bloody merry-go-round. All our charities and volunteer orgs have been taken over by a tiny cadre of people who can't even see their service users, let alone formulate policies to benefit them. I swear, they're destroying anything good everywhere they land.

Melamin · 17/04/2018 12:51

Strange moment to announce it Confused

@Popchyk - I can see it now, and I'm blown away by the narcicism. Trying to extort money with menaces, and shamelessly begging, all dressed up as victimhood and oppression. I'm trying to thing of something comparable and can't.

To be clear I know this is a small minority of trans activists doing this, and I'm sure many trans people are equally horrified at this behaviour.

Callmejudith · 17/04/2018 12:58

JHB is definitely on the peak of the hill!

IamSpartacusAgain · 17/04/2018 13:06

I might be super paranoid but I just went to google "girl guides" in google news to see if papers had reported the resignation and there were no relevant news stories at all showing for a good few weeks. Which surprised me as I expected the open letter to be there.

I then tried girl guides trans and girl guides transgender and only a couple of old stories from last month in the right wring press. I can't find the open letter story in the papers anywhere.

Is this because it was behind a paywall or a letter rather an article? Am I just failing at google? I mean it was printed right!

OldCrone · 17/04/2018 13:20

IamSpartacusAgain
Try "girl guides transgender" in all results (not news) and set time to past week. I get the letter in the Times as the first result.

OlennasWimple · 17/04/2018 13:46

Doesn't the BBC's charter mean that it has to present everything as nice and balanced, but other news outlets aren't under the same obligations?

Juells · 17/04/2018 14:04

I googled Girl Guides in the News tab and it was the second item down.

Pratchet · 17/04/2018 16:42

Even if, though, you can't give one side the absolute ability to close debate by refusing to take part. You can just say 'we reached out for comment' or 'we invited them to respond''we asked them to come and defend the policy etc etc and that does the job. (Should do) but bbc is terrified of trans lobby I think.
