This surely isn’t right.

I guess not

FencingFightingTorture35 · 16/04/2018 13:06

That's ridiculous. This is fir a science experiment!

ScarletBegonias · 16/04/2018 13:07

I suppose it would be possible to read it with a comma after "healthy men" to make it a more sensible proposition?

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 13:08

Gosh, could there be a relationship between hormones and fertility? This would have been a fascinating new field of investigation in, what 1852?

Not even touching "healthy men with periods".

RealityHasALiberalBias · 16/04/2018 13:09

That's how I read it Scarlet, but it wouldn't surprise me if I were wrong!

felicitythemangyfox · 16/04/2018 13:09

FFS, they have just punctuated badly (or rather not punctuated). They want women with regular or irregular periods and they also want men.

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/04/2018 13:10

Don't they mean healthy men, and also healthy women with regular or irregular periods who aren't on hormonal contraception?

I really don't think they mean transmen.

RosenbergW · 16/04/2018 13:13

I notice that men come before women in that ad.

genehuntswife · 16/04/2018 13:16

I didn’t see it like me that, I hope you’re right cos otherwise...the lunatics have taken over the asylum
We’re about to part fund our daughter going to university, it worries me that critical thinking seems to be something not taught anymore. To me that’s the whole point of university

Nope, just badly punctuated I think. They're also looking at how metabolism is regulated by hormones, so no need to be quite so snarky about it. Here is more information about it:
www.imperial.ac.uk/news/177126/hormone-enhance-brain-activity-associated-with/

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 13:25

The snarky comment was directed at Kittens above who said it sounded like it was from the 1850s. It may also be used as a drug to treat depression, which I would be interested in as I suffer from it.

sundayblanket · 16/04/2018 13:25

You're being ridiculous, it's a case of poo punctuation. Non story

flowersonthepiano · 16/04/2018 13:26

This is their website (I think). It just says women. I am guessing hoping it is a punctuation typo.

imperial.crf.nihr.ac.uk/studies/the-physiological-effect-of-kisspeptin-on-reproductive-hormones/

genehuntswife · 16/04/2018 13:27

SusanBunch, wasn’t meaning to be “snarky” , with all the newspeak going around, I thought this was another ...men are women tripe. My bad

OP posts:
flowersonthepiano · 16/04/2018 13:27

cross posted

SomeDyke · 16/04/2018 13:29

If you look here:
imperial.crf.nihr.ac.uk/patients-public/studies-looking-volunteers/
Seems to have conflated the TWO kisspeptin studies, healthy men less than 36, and women 18-35 NOT on hormonal contraception.

So, badly punctuated, not (as I read it) suggesting men with regular or irregular periods not on hormonal contraception...............

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 13:30

Not you, genehunt, it was kittens who made some remark about 'oh wow, do they really think hormones affect infertility' or equally juvenile. Clearly a legitimate study looking into a worthy cause.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 13:32

It's not actually my fault if the people who created that poster are terrible writers, Susan.

(Amusing that personal attacks are fine depending on who they're aimed at though.)

flowersonthepiano · 16/04/2018 13:34

I must admit, it did cross my mind that maybe the newspaper ad people had pointed out that men can have periods (i.e. transmen) and that the ad should also say men for inclusiveness purposes....

Which newspaper is it?

I'm getting a bit tin foil hatty over here. It's not good Sad

PeterManYum · 16/04/2018 13:43

Hopefully just a typo, but it made me think of a cutting on the News Quiz on Fri. Also from the Evening standard I think:

*Interested in being paid to help with medical research?

Are you healthy and aged 18-65?
Are you a man who's had a vasectomy? Or a woman who is post-menopausal or who's been surgically sterilised or has an IUD?

If your answer is yes to all of these questions, you might be suitable for one of our ongoing studies.* Grin

AbsintheFriends · 16/04/2018 13:50

The fact that it is open to misunderstanding shows how badly written it is. These days it could very well be referring to men who have periods, (Kenny Jones)

DairyisClosed · 16/04/2018 13:50

I read it as actual men and women with periods only applying to women. But it's possible that they are actually conducting a study on the effects of gender reassignment treatment on fertility and therefore decided to use trans friendly terminology in an attempt to lure them in.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 13:51

Now I want to know where they'd put the IUD on the man who's had a vasectomy...

lostinjapan · 16/04/2018 13:57

If it meant what you think it meant it would have said “we are looking for healthy men and women with regular and irregular periods”. But it says “we are looking for healthy men and healthy women with regular and irregular periods”. Which makes it clear that those are two distinct groups. No extra punctuation needed.

Weezol · 16/04/2018 14:02

I read it as an atrociously worded ad, nothing to do with Transpeople.

If this is the quality of their ad, I don't have much faith in the outcomes of their project.
