This surely isn’t right.

Well Kittens it’s surely telling that your first thought is that it must be someone telling you men are women. It’s not even terrible punctuation- surely Oxford commas are a matter of individual style and not mandatory.
I don’t think pointing out that you made a snarky comment about the study being from the 1850s constitutes a personal attack. I disagree- it seems like a very valid study.

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 14:53

Agree totally lostinjapan. Very clear from the ad what it means.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/04/2018 14:54

Also think it is a newsquiz candidate. send it in.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 14:56

Your comments in this thread are indeed quite telling, Susan. Which is an observation, not an attack.

ScarletBegonias · 16/04/2018 14:57

I see this ad has also been discussed on Twitter and that Imperial College joined in to clarify that there will be two separate studies - one for men and one for women. They apologised for any confusion caused by the way it was worded.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 15:32

Which confirms that it's not just us mean meanies what are mean who found the wording to be in need of clarification.

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 15:34

Telling of what precisely?

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 15:35

Nobody said you were mean (on this thread anyway)

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 15:45

Sorry, Susan, as keen as you are on having what I'm guessing will be a thoroughly pointless argument I'm not really interested in engaging with you any further.

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 15:49

Really not keen on an argument, no. I just didn’t understand what you meant. But fair enough, I understand.

SianRunner · 16/04/2018 15:53

I'm glad Imperial have admitted it caused confusion and have held their hands up!

lostinjapan · 16/04/2018 16:18

Well not really, because the only people questioning this on Twitter are TERFs. No normal person is going to see that advert in the Metro and think they're looking for men who have periods. There's nothing wrong with the wording and nothing for them to hold their hands up to. There's a distinct difference between causing confusion (to TERFs) and being confusing. And this is an example of the former.

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/04/2018 16:34

So anyone here who found the wording unclear and wondered if they meant trans men is not a normal person, but a TERF and deliberately causing confusion?

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 16:41

Struck me that the way this would have been avoided would have been to put women first in this ad....
Had it read ‘we are looking for healthy women with regular and irregular periods and healthy men’ it would have made perfect sense.... Shows that we should avoid automatically putting the world men or male first.

SianRunner · 16/04/2018 16:43

Oh please. Not the TERF cliché again.

It was an unclear notice. Imperial have said so themselves.

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 16:47

Assassinated I don’t think that’s the case. Anyway, I hate the term TERF as an insult. But it is true that on twitter, there was not widespread confusion. It was one poster called ‘GoodyDaisy’ who according to TRAs would qualify as a ‘TERF’ in that her account is dedicated to GC stuff. She was swiftly corrected by Imperial and that was it really. It’s not true to say that loads of people were confused by it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/04/2018 16:49

Lets eat kitty! Poor punctuation kills cats. Just saying.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/04/2018 16:50

That should be 'let's eat kitty', argh.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 16:55

Let's eat, grandma

VS

Let's eat grandma!

felicitythemangyfox · 16/04/2018 16:56

#peaktransphobia

AbsintheFriends · 16/04/2018 17:03

It was poorly written, to the extent of obscuring its message. Imperial have acknowledged this.

In a trans-inclusive society, it's not at all unreasonable to assume that menstruating transmen were being sought. (I'll just put this here again. www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5500565/Transgender-man-campaign-PERIODS.html) I'm not seeing why it's transphobic to think that??

(And just to politely point out, TERF is considered a slur, and not really conducive to respectful communication.)

flowersonthepiano · 16/04/2018 17:07

"No normal person is going to see that advert in the Metro and think they're looking for men who have periods."

Would that be because men don't have periods??

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 17:10

Would that be because men don't have periods??

Probably, yes (hopefully)

flowersonthepiano · 16/04/2018 17:18

SusanBunch you do know that some would consider your assertion that men don't have periods transphobic?

SusanBunch · 16/04/2018 17:26

Yeah, I guess I just have to live with that, flowers Grin
