The Self-ID petition hit 10,000 yesterday meaning the government WILL respond

Yesterday the Self ID petition hit 10,000 signatures and now has over 10,200!

This means the government will respond to the petition. Does anyone know what form the response will take? Does that mean just an acknowledgement that it has been noted, is there more involved?

If you haven’t signed or shared the petition you can do so here

What’s the petition about?

Consult with women on proposals to enshrine 'gender identity' in law
The government proposes to amend the law to allow people to self-identify as men or women, and to stop allowing organisations in sensitive situations to exclude people of the opposite birth sex. We call for women to be consulted on how to protect women and girls' rights, safety, privacy and dignity.

More details
We call for:

  • Respectful and evidence-based discussion about the impact of proposed changes and for women's voices to be heard.

  • The government to consult with women’s organisations on how self-declaration would impact on women-only services and spaces, data-gathering, and monitoring of sex-based discrimination.

  • The principle of single-sex spaces to be upheld – and where necessary extended.

Good news!

Great I look forward to a statement about how the government is dedicated to equality and making life easier for trans people and women should just be nicer.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/04/2018 11:49

That’s my worry teacup which is why I think we need a concerted push toward 100,000 over the next 5 months.

Yeah that sounds about right.

CharlieParley · 16/04/2018 12:42

Teacup Yes, that's exactly what happens.

The petition needs to reach 100K to get it debated in parliament (the government has ways around that requirement, it has refused to debate others in the past). Like most other such petitions, without a concerted effort of asking people IRL, it won't reach 100K.

I believe this would actually be good - once women and men understand what is at stake, they don't go back to blindly supporting self-id and most importantly they talk to others about this. It snowballs out because almost everyone supports self-id by default, never having thought about it much. So making an effort to reach 100K signatures also means making an effort to talk to more people about this IRL (if you can. Obviously don't make yourself vulnerable).

10,000 signatures.

If everyone who signed so far raises awareness for ten more people to sign that's 100,000

Unfortunately, judging from both past experience of petitions on other matters (eg faith schools) and the dismissive replies all too many women have had from their MPs re self ID etc, there's a distinct possibility that we may just get a fob-off.

ScarletBegonias · 16/04/2018 13:00

Circle - there's a section of the website where the petition lives which sets out the responses given to other petitions. If it works, this is the link:
petition.parliament.uk/petitions?state=with_response
So we can probably expect a brief statement of the government's position.

FencingFightingTorture35 · 16/04/2018 13:13

I am not expecting much from their response. Definitely best not to get your hopes up.

Spindelina · 16/04/2018 13:15

I wonder whether a fob-off from the government might actually help us make our point. Lots of people I’ve spoken to think that we are overstating how much influence the “loony fringe” of the trans rights movement has. If the government actually says something like “no, we’re fine thanks. We don’t need to consult women on changing the legal definition of ‘wonan’.”, then I know people who might take my concerns more seriously.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/04/2018 17:08

Hopefully even if it is a template it will be picked up in the press
“Government respond to women asking to be heard on crucial proposed amendments to their rights, with ‘pop back in the kitchen, there’s a good girl’”
