"Transgender runners will be able to compete as their self-identified gender in the Boston Marathon on Monday, 16 April."

The article concludes:
"Perhaps critics concerned about fair competition when trans women run as women should turn their attention to the dehydration, reduced stamina and dizziness caused by treatments such as testosterone blockers. "

I ran a marathon once (only once mind you, never again) on my period once.
My symptoms were
Breast tenderness
Fatigue
Abdominal cramps
Leg cramps
Back pain

I was also taking a fairly common drug called Montelukast which has side effects including:
Malaise
Nose bleeds
Heartburn
Excessive sweating
Fever
Toothache
Stomach pain
Trembles
Tiredness
Vaginal and rectum bleeding

I also took 6 other medications, should I also list those side effects and symptoms of the conditions that forced me to take them?

(Slightly edited version of my original comment).

Also: What about women and girls?

I would do if i thought i had said anything interesting

Maryz · 11/04/2018 18:31

What on earth was so bad about the other thread?

Was it (like so many others) deliberately derailed?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/04/2018 18:33

No it was the opening post which was considered to be goady

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 11/04/2018 18:34

I think some of the posts about the history of women this race in particular were very interesting.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/04/2018 18:36

Absolutely circle

I showed dd a picture of the Boston marathon female runner

I think its good to remind her of how far women have come in terms of sports

Juells · 11/04/2018 18:40

The link to the Fox News item was really interesting. It's bad when the only people who'll stand up for women are right-wingers :(

Maryz · 11/04/2018 18:41

Goady? Really? ffs

I thought it said "there go women's records" - which is absolutely true. Women's sporting records will fall like skittles, just as they did when all the Eastern Europeans took the athletic medals back in the 70s and 80s. Before sex testing and testosterone testing came in properly.

Or is that too goady? If so, report me (or I'll report myself) but since when was stating the bleeding obvious goady?

abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/boston-marathons-trans-women-compete-women-54320495

Stevie Romer, a transgender woman from Woodstock, Illinois, says she registered for Boston as a woman because that's what she is. Although she hasn't done anything to lower her testosterone levels, Romer legally changed her gender, grew her hair out and started living openly as a woman more than a year ago.

"To be able to experience it as me was really, really important," she said. "I've been a runner since as long as I can remember. I love running, but I just happen to be transgender."

I would hope that consideration is given to the woman who did not gain a place an also, no doubt also loves running.

'Sport for all' and inclusivity is very important. I hope that sporting bodies are taking steps so that impact studies are in place to consider the girls and women who quietly withdraw or who lose places in competitive sport and measures are taken to ensure their voices are also heard.

R0wantrees · 11/04/2018 19:05

considerable resources have been invested in encouraging girls and women to be more active participants in sport in recognition of the disproportionate drop-out of girls and women from competitive sport.

www.sportengland.org/our-work/women/this-girl-can/

Sport England CEO Jennie Price, said: “The figures on participation are crystal clear. There is a significant gender gap, with two million more men than women exercising or playing sport regularly. I believe we can tackle this gap, because our research shows that 75% of women would like to do more.

“Before we began this campaign, we looked very carefully at what women were saying about why they felt sport and exercise was not for them. Some of the issues, like time and cost, were familiar, but one of the strongest themes was a fear of judgement. Worries about being judged for being the wrong size, not fit enough and not skilled enough came up time and again.

LizzieSiddal · 11/04/2018 19:08

Womenneed to take a stand here.
I know they shouldn’t have to, but if every women refused to take part in this race, the organisers would do something. They make a lot of money, whether for charity or for the organisers. Money talks and it’s the only way these people will listen.

ReluctantCamper · 11/04/2018 19:09

cripes.

Men can run faster than women.

Since when was that a controversial fact?

Hmm
Ellenripleysalienbaby · 11/04/2018 19:10

This is Stevie Romer apparently. Totes female obvs.

"To be able to experience it as me was really, really important," she said. "I've been a runner since as long as I can remember. I love running, but I just happen to be transgender."

Translation: me me me me, it's all about me me me me me, I don't care if what I do impacts others because I only care about me me me me me.

Shock how was the original thread goady? ??

ReluctantCamper · 11/04/2018 19:11

yeah bu LizzieSiddal there will be women participating in the race who are completely cool with transwomen participants. I mean I think, and I expect you think, that if they believe this is fair then they're deluded, but everyone is still (just about at the moment) entitled to an opinion.

There will be other women who don't feel able to make a stand.

0phelia · 11/04/2018 19:12

I can't remember my original comment but feel free to add it back in.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 11/04/2018 19:12

Also this from that article

For trans women who do lower their testosterone levels, medical experts say there's no evidence of an athletic advantage.

"That's a misconception and a myth," said Dr. Alex Keuroghlian, director of education and training programs at the Fenway Institute, a health and advocacy center for the Boston LGBT community. "There's no physiologic advantage to being assigned male at birth."

is total bollocks isn't it?

I said it on the other thread: let them take part and win. Let the whole world see what utter horseshit this entire thing is.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 11/04/2018 19:13

R0wantrees · 11/04/2018 19:13

the people who are transgender are running within the rules... just as Lauren Hubbard competed within the current IOC rules. There is more to be gained in highlighting the, perhaps unintended, consequences of the new rules than in what may seem to be protesting those few individuals who are now competing as a result.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 11/04/2018 19:17

I think this keeps us on the higher ground.
I do think however press stories about the individual circumstances will be what makes a lot of people outside the current conversation sit up and say “wait a minute, what?”

R0wantrees · 11/04/2018 19:20

why do I have a warning sign on this thread rather than a secure symbol? On other threads I have the padlock.... sorry to go off topic!

nauticant · 11/04/2018 19:20

It was a breath of fresh air to watch that Fox News piece. (Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd be writing.)

I've noticed that some on the Right have adopted, as a stock phrase, "biological males who identify as women" when referring to transwomen. If only more media organisations would show a similar commitment to reality in their reporting. (Obviously not always Fox News' strong point in the normal run of things.)

Maryz · 11/04/2018 19:24

Interesting, CircleSquare.

So a man of 20 with a qualifying time of 3 hours 34 minutes 59 seconds could run as a woman.

As a man he'd have to be over 50 to run with that qualifying time.

For a fun runner who just wants to have the experience of running a famous race, why not just declare a change of "gender".

Callmejudith · 11/04/2018 19:25

Wow that fox news clip is amazing
