Supreme Court decide firing woman for breastfeeding was not disciminatory

US Supreme Court upheld a federal appeals court ruling against a breast-feeding mother, Angela Ames, who felt bullied out of her job with Nationwide Insurance. Part of the court's reasoning was, according to Galen Sherwin of the American Civil Liberties Union, “that even if Angela had been fired because she was breast-feeding, that was not sex discrimination, in part because men can lactate under certain circumstances.”

Disgraceful. A disingenuous ruling. Poor woman.

CATTgroupJen · 08/04/2018 15:34

This is awful...can men lactate if they're not on drugs? Hardly a fair decision, I wonder how many men lactate.

caroldecker · 08/04/2018 15:51

bollocks - that was the lower court ruling. The higher courts refused to take the case because the women in question had not complained internally within the organisation. Basically it ruled she needed to go through the company's complaints procedure before she could go to court.

I was coming on to say "Erm... that's not what actually happened" But I see caroldecker got here faster than I did Smile

Good grief! Was it really that long ago?

Thanks, I hadn't realised it didn't work properly. How odd!!

PalePinkSwan · 08/04/2018 17:23

THIS DID NOT HAPPEN

Sorry to shout but that case has been discussed several times on here.

Ereshkigal · 08/04/2018 17:29

Why do you think they mentioned the male lactating thing? What possible relevance was it if the case was clear cut?

Buckingfrolicks · 13/04/2018 14:48

my apologies- if I had realised how old it was, and the more accurate information from caroldecker, I would not have posted. Fake news - sorry
