It has taken Paddy Jackson NINE days to issue a cleverly worded statement. Forgive my cynicism, but I interpret it as a last ditch attempt to save his career, masquerading as some sort of soul searching apology.

I don’t understand Twitter but I have shared this article on Facebook with the hashtag #idontbelievehim

I urge you, if you agree, to do the same. It would be amazing if it started trending.

Hopefully this one will be a ‘clicky’ link...

'I'm so sorry I got caught' - every man who got caught. Another non apology on a par with 'I'm sorry you felt offended'.

BudgieInABeret · 06/04/2018 17:24

I think he's resolutely dedicated to getting back into rugby

OOMG · 06/04/2018 17:28

And not a word of that statement would have been actually written by him. #idontbelievehim

Obviously seeing that Olding’s statement outside court didn’t lead to trending hashtags and thousands protesting all over the island and he’s trying to back track.

The comments on the Irish times article on Facebook are heartening- people are seeing this for what it is- a panicked rush to a PR company

I have been reluctant to compare the two as I believe all men on trial (and the others involved in the misogyny) behaved appallingly and I don’t wish to paint SO any more favourably based on a comparison with mind blowing appalling behaviour.

However, I did think it was the right thing to do to communicate the regret he felt about that night, in the immediate wake of the verdict. That was the moment to do it.

It is hearsay, but it was suggested on another thread that PJ and his family had a celebration after the verdict.

He and his friends can issue all the statements they wish.

Every single one of them behaved disgracefully.

I have as much sympathy and respect for them as they demonstrated towards a 19 year old girl that night.

When the He-Man Woman Haters Club brags about how they leave teen age girls bleeding and hysterically crying when they are through with them and put them out on the street the way these adults did, there is no going back, smoothing it over, or recovering. You told the world who you are and now everyone knows. I am sure he will find some people who won't care.

AngryAttackKittens · 06/04/2018 19:38

Does he actually think anyone believes him (or rather, believes the PR person who wrote that up for him)?

I'd love to think his career would be ruined by this but when has that ever happened?

There was a full page ad in the Belfast Telegraph today, paid for by rugby fans, asking for the men involved not to be selected ever again. Will have a look, see if I can find a link.

Scumbag. He misjudged everything and deserves nothing.

This case really got to me and the other one apologising outside the court effectively admitting that the girl is a rape victim (while not admitting that he's a rapist) and he feels bad about this didn't actually help but was the right thing to do. At least he seemed to have taken some of it in, however pointless and ineffective.

This .... much too little, much too late.
