Does anyone feel able to tackle this? (Instagram)

I hover on the edges of the body positivity movement on Instagram. I actually don't like a lot of it but I do love the message of stepping away from diet culture and valuing yourself for who you are. However it does seem to be a movement which has become heavily enmeshed with the trans cult, with a lot of the leaders of the movement being queer or non-binary or pansexual and repeatedly promoting the idea of inclusivity and the fact that being a woman is all about the feelz.

This is a large movement with lots of young handmaidens women in it. One of the biggest Instagram accounts is run by Bodiposipanda. I don't doubt for a second she's done some amazing work for people in helping them accept themselves but every so often something will come up on her feed which tells her nearly 1 million followers that trans women are women. This is a piece of artwork she posted recently and if you look closely some of the women have penises.

My IG account is linked to my business so I'm afraid I feel unable to get in there and reply with a different narrative. But it would be amazing if others did if you feel able to. I think it's all too easy to focus on Twitter but these IG accounts are essentially doing a lot to indoctrinate young women. I mean, 1 million young followers is bonkers. You see a lot of people in the comments questioning how someone can be a woman if they are men and they get thoroughly 're-educated' at which point they come back apologising and vow to be more mindful of men in future. I imagine some feel intimidated because they've wandered into a conversation they know nothing about and then get worried about being thought a bigot.

I just think if there were more gender-critical women replying on these accounts asking questions it might make people stop. It might stop people accepting these ideas so willingly for one which wouod be very helpful.

Just bouncing this for anyone with instagram.

spicerack · 02/04/2018 00:07

🙄

Casmama · 02/04/2018 00:17

I’m not sure whether I am missing something here? I am very concerned about a lot of the trans agenda but all I see here is artwork embracing a positive body image no matter what body parts you have/ choose to have and I can’t see a problem with that.
Is it that the comments have been hijacked and used as a stick to beat people with or is there something specific about the artwork?

Ollivander84 · 02/04/2018 00:20

There is a LOT of comments on it

Ollivander84 · 02/04/2018 00:20

Some of them

The message that goes with the artwork is that woman =anyone who feels like a woman is a woman. The penis can be a sex organ. You don't have a problem with that? You don't mind nearly a million mostly young people being told this and it being suggested they are bigots if they don't agree?

This is absolutely mental. No, women do not have penises. I will comment.

FencingFightingTorture35 · 02/04/2018 08:30

Another of her ppsts. I think on first glance of the page they don't jump out of you but they do pop up on a fairly regular basis

And yes indoctrination is exactly what it is. Lots of her page is lovely. She does a lot of good and is clearly a wonderful person. But it's this background message of 'hey girls younger and more vulnerable than me, to be inclusive/kind/nice you need to agree men can be women if they just feel they are to be in my gang'

If I was an overweight, unhappy teen I would be hugely vulnerable to this message

Oh and just fyi your Instagram can be linked to your Facebook. It's another reason i feel nervous about being gender-critical on there.

I don't want anyone to compromise their safety if they have any concerns.

I know mumsnetters are diverse and many are younger women but I get the impression many people here aren't on IG or focussing on it in the same way as Twitter. If you have a daughter who uses it it might be worth having a chat with them about accounts like this, so they know this is just one viewpoint. Sorry if that sounds horribly patronising!

Are they all supposed to be women? Can’t read the text underneath.

Ritzsaltedcrackers · 02/04/2018 09:37

I’m openly terf on my FB too so not a problem!

FencingFightingTorture35 · 02/04/2018 09:45

They are merry. Except some of them have penises

Thanks for the heads up OP. My 12 yr old DD uses instragram a lot & I do monitor but it's always handy to have specific points of reference to watch out for.

DearSergio · 02/04/2018 10:30

I used to follow her on Instagram until she posted one of these pictures. I was abit gutted to be honest, I really liked the body positive message- but once you notice that one has drunk the kool aid you realise they all have, to some degree. IG is quite lib femmy but I've thankfully managed to find some great GC and rad fem pages recently

Sorry, this is indoctrination, I completely agree, but I'm still immaturely giggling at that turn of phrase

But...but...I thought it was only TERFS and bigots who focus on genitals? Hmm

mogloveseggs · 02/04/2018 14:15

Another who was so disappointed by that picture. Have followed.

FencingFightingTorture35 · 02/04/2018 15:31

Thank you.

The picture isn't even by Bodyposipanda so I just wanted to put it up here to highlight what is being said on there. But thinking about it some more, putting up a cartoon image where most of her posts are pink and colourful and childish to a degree, means that it only has more appeal to young people. There's an air of Zoella about her, in that both are grown adults but I have no doubt are aiming their content at younger girls or women.

Sorry OP I forgot about this thread.
Yes I absolutely do have a problem with the message and apologies for not picking up the message- I didn’t read the comments.

Well clearly you don't have a problem with it yourself, if you're not prepared to challenge it. Why should others do it on your behalf?
