Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

WEP still at it

Pausing momentarily at the WEP stall this morning...

Young woman, brightly: Women’s Equality Party!

Me: How are we defining ‘woman’?

Young woman: Anyone who identifies as a woman.

Me: Bad luck.

And that was where the conversation ended.

I have really bad period pain today. I tried identifying out of it, but it was a paracetamol job.

Would have been interesting to hear her definition of woman.

JoyTheUnicorn · 31/03/2018 12:54

So disappointing that no political party will accept that men and women are different.
It's beyond parody that the Women's Equality Party have gone down the identity route. Is that really what they set out to achieve?

NotTerfNorCis · 31/03/2018 13:04

They're saying we are different, but in some way it's impossible to define.

By the way, has anyone seen this article on the Guardian muddying the waters on 'gender ideology ' (trying to make out it's a right wing invention)?

Gender ideology bogus

Yes it is very frightening.

concretesieve · 31/03/2018 14:18

Brilliant - you made me Grin

Hope you feel better soon.

Daff0dil · 31/03/2018 15:04

I hope that the WEP will soon recognise how a small but powerful number of those within their definition of 'women' are exerting a huge amount of influence & silencing the concerns of those who are 'women' by dint of being born female.

LostArt · 31/03/2018 15:34

I don't understand the WEP stance. How can anyone believe that there is a need for a political party for women, but 'women' is a state one can opt in an out of. Surely, if women want equality, we could just identify as men and get in with our lives as equal human beings? What are the issues that link women and TIM, but exclude men and, presumably, TIF? What are TIF doing to get equality that the bog standard women isn't doing?

Sparctopus · 31/03/2018 16:39

This is exactly what I always want to ask. What issues affect all, or most, women and trans women, which don't generally affect men or trans men?

Or for that matter, please specify what I have in common with (say) LM which I don't have in common with DH?

Or - in what way are LM and I more similar than DH and LM (who share biology)?

LostArt · 31/03/2018 17:04

"Or for that matter, please specify what I have in common with (say) LM which I don't have in common with DH? "

Is it a compulsion to wear mascara and a fear of power tools?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 31/03/2018 17:12

I think it's that you both 'feel' like women. Like, you can feel the moon goddess moving through your body and aligning you to the vast spiritual mother sea of worldly wisdom.

Which more than makes up for an extra 25% on your lifetime pay and a chance to sit around while someone else fills the dishwasher.

Vickxy · 31/03/2018 18:17

I don't understand how a party claiming to fight for the rights of women, can fail so spectacularly at the first hurdle. You cannot possibly fight for the rights of women while refusing to define what a woman is. You cannot fight for the rights of women, while including men under the label of woman, because then it just becomes 'people' rights. Which would be an ok stance, if not for women actually needing separate rights due to..err..biology.

SuburbanRhonda · 31/03/2018 18:20

And there was me thinking it was about always being at the back of the line.

Popchyk · 31/03/2018 18:40

How does this serve actual transwomen though?

If "women" means biological women and biological men (so all of humanity basically), then what is a transgender person identifying with exactly?

Imagine that you do have gender dysphoria, have a crap old time of it, finally get a GRC and then the thing you thought that you identified with has changed to include what you are trying to escape in the first place.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 31/03/2018 19:01

Ah well your actual goddesses aren't bothered about little things like lines. Not when they get to comune with the whole spirit of nature thing and use their front holes for the womaning. not giving birth, that's a different thing done by menstruators

AncientLights · 31/03/2018 19:11

Hi Sparctopus - I'm new here and don't get the initials: what are LM & DH please?

hipsterfun · 31/03/2018 19:44

LM Lily (formerly Liam) Madigan
DH Dearest husband

AncientLights · 31/03/2018 21:39

Ah thanks. Dear little Lily. The viper.

LizzieSiddal · 31/03/2018 22:08

I’d like an answer to...

What is the point of a Woman’s Equality Party, if anyone can be a woman?

JeebusWEPt · 31/03/2018 22:28

Thanks, concrete, the worst of it’s out of the way now Smile

With the local elections coming up, I expect I’ll have the chance to play ‘What’s a woman?’ with representatives of various parties.

What a shame the first party to give a silly answer was the WEP.
