Local elections

If you have local elections on May 3, who will you be voting for? I want anti-self ID, pro-women, anti-Brexit madness. Pipe dream, hey?! Can't vote Labour - I'm an ex-member thanks to cretinous Corbyn (their Lexit/self ID position rules them out for me, plus of course the whole anti-semitism thing which is just delightful).

I'm in Hackney in a staunch Labour ward so my vote is largely symbolic. I know my ward has WE standing (ha ha as if, considering their self ID position), Greens, LD and Tories, and perhaps a few other smaller parties.

So who are you voting for? And if you don't have a local election, who would you vote for if you were me?

I’ll be spoiling my ballot.

MrsFogi · 29/03/2018 11:33

This weekend I am going to be emailing every candidate on the list about the Self-ID issue (including links to a number of decent articles about it) and asking for their stance on the matter. I will also be asking for their stance on Brexit.
Once I get the response I will decide whether or not there is anyone I can possibly vote for. If not, I will vote "None" and ensure it gets counted as a protest vote

busyboysmum · 29/03/2018 11:34

A lot of people have suggested a mass ballot spoil with a catchy tag line to write on as in "XX Biology matters" or something.

Freshlylaidterf · 29/03/2018 11:38

busyboysmum
Thats a great idea. I was going to spoil mine anway

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 29/03/2018 11:39

They have to show the spoiled ballots to the candidates, right?

Theworldisfullofidiots · 29/03/2018 11:45

Where can you find a list of candidates?

MrsFogi · 29/03/2018 11:46

Please please everyone if you spoil your ballot do it so it counts as a spoiled paper (and doesn't end up counting for one of the candidates). Link again - [http://www.votenone.org.uk/blankvote.html] and more info here about not ending up voting for a candidate by mistake: [http://www.votenone.org.uk/protest_votes_count.html]

Having checked it looks as though the deadline for candidates to stand has not yet passed. Take a look on your local council's website.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 29/03/2018 11:49

MrsFogi

Can we make it a blank vote as shown and add an additional note or will that invalidate the blank vote/none style?

elisaveta · 29/03/2018 11:49

I'm voting Lib Dem. I am a Remainer and find that very few parties represent my view.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 29/03/2018 12:05

Thanks @MrsFogi, I’ll be spoiling my ballot so I’ll do that.

Actually had a Labour Councillor at my door last week - I think she may have regretted knocking on my door... #SelfIDRant

Gacapa · 29/03/2018 12:57

Please, please if you have an Independent standing then ask them.

It might mean you can vote instead of ballot spoiling.

SwearyG · 29/03/2018 13:04

You can spoil your ballot in a way your vote might still count. Spoiled ballots are shown to the agents and if the mark is clearly within the box for a candidate, though not a cross, your vote will still stand but they will discuss it.

With this in mind I plan on putting XX or XY against the candidates I'm voting for and scrawling something mature like #labourlosingwomen and women don't have dicks across the main paper. That is, if anyone puts a candidate up against the Labour councillors in our ward. Otherwise it's just scrawling.

Tootsweets23 · 29/03/2018 13:26

This is so depressing - to end up having to spoil my ballot instead of voting for something/someone. I was going to vote LD due to Brexit issues, but the behaviour of their LGBT reps on Twitter regarding self ID is beyond the pale.

Spoiling my ballot for the first time ever

CecilyNeville · 29/03/2018 14:07

I would spoil if I could, but we don't have local elections here this time. I'll go into the next city along, and loiter near any candidate stalls to see if they approach me, and I can make my views known.

Mumsnut · 29/03/2018 14:28

I'm voting for the Residents Association candidate.

2rebecca · 29/03/2018 14:38

I suspect in my next election I may vote Tory for the first time ever as they're the only folk getting back to me on the transgender/ self ID issues and do seem to be thinking about it not parroting the same line. I really don't want a Corbyn government his followers seem increasingly intolerant. I don't want Scottish independence and am increasingly ambivalent about Brexit.

tobee · 29/03/2018 15:58

Spoil my ballot.

Many years ago, in a less crazy world, I volunteered to work for Labour, "watching the count" as in watching the ballot counters were doing it properly. The spoilt ballots were, iirc, put together but barely looked at by candidates etc.

I know it's symbolic but I think they'll be ignored, sadly.

2rebecca · 29/03/2018 16:21

Agree that if you're at the count spoilt ballots are just a time wasting hassle. At the last count I was at only the "are they spoilt or aren't they" ones were looked at by the candidates/ election agents. The council official just sorted out the obvious spoilt ballots with no crosses or numbers anywhere.

hollyhzd · 29/03/2018 16:35

I'm also in Hackney and will probably spoil my ballot.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 29/03/2018 16:39

I'm not sure if we are having loca elections yet, however I cannot vote for any main party and have thought about spoiling my paper, for the first time ever.
XX biology matters should take off, I hope.
