R4's Any Questions talked about transwomen in women's spaces. Tomorrow is Any Questions. They usually respond to caller demand. Let's bombard them with calls. I am not the most informed but I am sure some of you have a lot to say. It starts at 2.30pm tomorrow

To have your say on the issues discussed on Any Questions? Call: 03700 100 444 (Calls will cost no more than calls to 01 and 02 geographic landlines.

You can also send an email

If anything it will show the producers how important this issue is.

I have both texted and emailed.

IamNotDarling · 24/03/2018 07:38

Listening again now - Suella Fernandes sounds sensible. Diane? Throw us under the bus. Vince Cable’s talking about this a human rights matter. Whole panel has

Well done the woman who raised the question but I disagree that this is about genitalia! This is about biological men taking women’s places in society.

IamNotDarling · 24/03/2018 07:38

*whole panel said very little of substance.

Ekphrasis · 24/03/2018 08:26

Good that the questioner was able to get her view in (dimbleby a bit GC?)

I want to ask: in what way is a penis female?

Please do was at Ekphrasis's "in what way is a penis female?"

HadronCollider · 24/03/2018 09:30

I'm struggling with the conservative thing too. I've alway felt more conservative in my personal views but really felt there must be more compassion for the poor, money for the NHS etc, being working class myself, but this issue has persuaded me that labour really isn't serving the interests of women anymore.

Ekphrasis · 24/03/2018 09:50

I don't know where else to put this but what an interesting thread on twitter from a transwoman (transsexual) regarding self id and GRC.

If anyone calls in, some of the points may be useful from a tw POV.

Here are some of the comments I've sent in (unfortunately via text). I went for a scatter gun approach.

The words man and woman are absolute concepts and therefore beyond qualification. It is an anomoly to say a trans woman is a woman.

And;

Diane Abbot states the maxim "trans women are women" but then goes on to say that the admittance of trans women in women only spaces would have to be considered on a case by case basis. She has contradicted herself. If she really thought trans women were women there would be no need to consider the appropriateness of them accessing women's only spaces.

And;

The term woman is a biological fact, not a feeling.

And;

Where are all the self identifying trans men?

And;

The language we use as a society is deeply symbolic and underpins how we experience the world as social beings. If the word "woman" becomes meaningless does this signify the unravelling of society as we know it.

And;

Does Diane Abbot identify as a cis-woman?

And;

One minority group (trans women), shouldn't crowd out another minority group (women).

The email form on the website has always been crap.
Just email

AsAProfessionalFekko · 24/03/2018 10:28

I've seen some very eloquent and sensible posts on here from - OK it's an outdated word - transsexuals (so born boy, transitioned to woman via medical intervention Etc).

I'm hoping that this is the type of voice we hear - I am irritated when I hear male bodied (well men) saying 'I'm a woman because...I say I am' with no intention to make any steps towards being 'woman' beyond their say so. And as for saying 'I'm Barbie today, tomorrow I will be Ken' (yes it happens).

Sadly these are the very vocal and bullying voices we hear (how very... Manlike?)

Ekphrasis · 24/03/2018 11:11

I only use transsexual as the person in my link refers to themselves as such.

nauticant · 24/03/2018 11:29

Normally Any Answers will pick up two or three of the discussion points from Any Questions and to not touch the rest. I would be surprised if they tackle this issue. You only have to listen to the uncomfortable response when the questioner said that men's genitalia has no business being in women's safe spaces to realise that prominent people in the mainstream view this issue with something akin to blind fear.

Maybe Anita Anita and/or her producer will be keen to have this discussed nevertheless. I hope so.

TheXXFactor · 24/03/2018 11:41

TBH, most of the public automatically dismiss anything that Diane Abbott supports as nonsense, so it's no bad thing that she spouted the "trans woman are women" line.

(personally I think she is the victim of massive racism & misogyny, and she does have some good ideas, but also that she spouts a lot of nonsense)

ReluctantCamper · 24/03/2018 12:27

Can anyone tell me what the exact question was? I emailed and have been called back to see if I want to go on. No guarantees though. But I haven't listened yet and won't be able to before the program. I just know that DA said transwomen are women

MrsWooster · 24/03/2018 12:53

URGENT URGENT URGENT

The trail before The Now Show suggested self-ID would feature on Any Answers? at 2pm.

Repeat of Any Answers? starts at 1:10pm.

Ekphrasis · 24/03/2018 12:59

I would if I felt I had enough info behind me. I'm not sure I'm as clever as others.

@datun are you available?!

@DJLippy?

Can you start a new thread?

Ekphrasis · 24/03/2018 13:00

They've left it out of the post Now Show plug.

TerfsUp · 24/03/2018 13:02

I just emailed and found that captcha wasn't working. I typed in xxxxx and submitted my question without any problem.

MrsWooster · 24/03/2018 13:07

Being an expert isn't necessary, imho. Being a woman, appalled at losing our spaces is enough. Even better, in some ways; it discredits the argument that it's only professional agitators look in a mirror, TRAs and rad fems that care about this.

ReluctantCamper · 24/03/2018 13:24

Thanks nauticant at least if they do have me on I won't sound like a total moron now!

nauticant · 24/03/2018 13:59

If you follow the discussion of this on twitter it's unsurprisingly mostly men telling women what should happen in women's spaces. Lefty dude bros, naturally.
