@Terftastic, yes, I'm pretty sure.

I don't think that promoting hormone blockers to young children is appropriate, but I am reminded of nothing more than the whole debate around Section 28, and how allowing anyone into a school to talk about homosexuality was akin to promoting it.

Kids are literate these days. Your average 12 year old kid who thinks they are transgender will google to see what they can do to be more female/ male/ whatever. Better to have that talk in a school environment where teachers have a responsibility to safeguard their pupils and ensure any discussions do not promote partisan views.

Ragusa · 23/03/2018 22:58

@erishkigal, I think the intent was pretty clear, and it was not purely to make people laugh ;)

A pearl-clutcher?! 've never ever been described as one of those before. But there's a first time for everything I suppose.

Terftastic · 23/03/2018 22:58

You realise that's what they are doing?

Ereshkigal · 23/03/2018 23:01

What "pretty clear intent" would that be?

thebewilderness · 23/03/2018 23:03

I'm just old, Ragusa. Very old, and been where you are. The beauty of internet advice is that you can simply ignore it if it hits too close to home.

You might be older than me, you might not, I am not exactly a spring chicken. I hope when I'm as old and wise as you I've learned not to be overtly patronising, at least.

thebewilderness · 23/03/2018 23:44

Clearly I mistook your immaturity for youth Ragusa. I beg your pardon.

That's not the way it's going though. People seem to have lost their minds and forgotten about basic safeguarding for children. Where is the balance? Look at what happened on QT this week. There is no debate

Mumsnet already uses the term 'gender ' instead of 'sex' on the profile page that members can fill in.

ScienceIsTruth · 24/03/2018 01:49

Here it is.

Really, MNHQ?
CircleSquareCircleSquare · 24/03/2018 02:46

Hey @MNHQ can we ask for clarification regarding the above photo?
Male and female are not genders. Is there a reasoning behind this? You have been very helpful in keeping free speech available to us in this gender critical discussion but it would be interesting to hear your thinking behind this. Not an attack, a mere interested question.

MargeH · 24/03/2018 07:39

Why does anybody tell the truth when filling in these details online? I don't. I keep my internet presence as vague as possible, and lie about my age, date of birth and location if it has no relevance. I don't use my regular name/ email address either.

Wobbleslikeaweeble · 24/03/2018 08:05

This thread is just unnecessary and looks petty. We are being watched from outside.

TerfsUp · 24/03/2018 08:24

I wish there was a text box next to 'Other' so that I could write whatever took my fancy at the time. I could be an ocelot or an armchair or a piece of computer software.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 24/03/2018 13:25

We are being watched from outside!

Good. The whole subject needs looking at.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 24/03/2018 14:20

Lidl, like the rest of the world (bar Mumsnet) have acknowledged the existence of intersex and non binary people.

Um, 'non binary' people are still either male or female. You can't have 'no' sex!

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 24/03/2018 14:23

Yes, 'non binary' 🙄 is absolutely NOTHING to do with intersex conditions. It's quite offensive to conflate the two.

JellySlice · 24/03/2018 15:13

I have no issue about being watched in this context. Truth is important.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments here. We've had a chat with our Insight team and we're going to be adjusting the survey and the registration page to say 'male/female/prefer not to say'.

We know there's no perfect solution here but we think this is the closest we can get to being sensitive to all parties.

TerfsUp · 26/03/2018 10:24

Thank you, MN!

Datun · 26/03/2018 10:52

Thank you Hebe. Here have some more Flowers. All those other bouquets must surely be wilting by now.

HebeMumsnet · 26/03/2018 12:14

Arf. Thanks @Datun. Place does need cheering up a bit this morning!
