$35,000 photography grant, called women photograph.com

Women Photograph is excited to announce our 2018 project grants for women & non-binary photographers.

[https://www.womenphotograph.com/grants-2018/ Here]]

I'm just catching up with the whole debate, but surely this then allows anyone who self identifies to enter? This grant would have been set up to help marginalised women photographers and now pretty much anyone can enter?

Every time I hear 'non binary' I roll my eyes.

Fekko · 19/03/2018 19:22

Great! My hairy bloke-mate is a photographer! Hey presto, call me Doris and he can enter!

Happy days for the boys.

Ifonlyus · 19/03/2018 19:26

To be fair, it does say 5 awards are available and one of thise is for nb or trans person. I think I'd be more pissed off to be truly trans and have to compete for an award with a 'special' non binary person - who really could just be anyone

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/03/2018 19:27

There are 4 x $5000 grants for women and one for non-binary or transgender people (I guess they mean transwomen, not trans men) to apply for. Plus another single $10,000 grant for women or non-binary people. So a large percentage of the money is for non-binary or transgender people (presumably transwomen, not trans men?)

Which makes the name of it a little odd, calling it a women's photography grant. It's that whole "non-men" thing again. Men are men, but women include anyone who is non-binary or trans.

I'd identify as a non-binary woman if I were to apply to maximize my chances, and specify that as a non-binary woman any of the categories would apply to me.

scoobyloobyloo · 19/03/2018 19:30

Ah, got so outraged by the title I didn't go into the small print Ifonlyus.

Even so, why the same category? Why not two totally different awards?

It feels so wrong.

Yes, why not just keep the women's grant and then have a separately named grant for a person who ids as trans or no sex at all. It's jyst women and non-men as it stands. At least a transgender category gives transmen an opportunity.

Djnoun · 19/03/2018 19:38

I'm just wondering when the trans bashing is going to stop at this point. I mean, doesn't it get boring talking about the same subject day in day out?

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/03/2018 19:42

I'm just wondering when the ploppers will stop, doesn't it get repetitious to drop into threads, shout "transphobes" and run away all the time?

Fekko · 19/03/2018 20:12

Most 'women only' lists or awards were created to address an imbalance or bias against women in some area. To make a level playing field for women who would otherwise be overlooked - to encourage girls to enter into specific fields. To show female role models.

Allowing born men to play on these terms is just making it irrelevant.

Djnoun

Where have I trans bashed?

There is a distinct difference between Pro-Women and trans bashing.

They are not the same thing.

Well put.

I also don't understand why people participate in threads only to have a whine about them. Have something constructive to say? Great! Want to plop? Waste of everyone's time.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/03/2018 10:10

ploppers ? Grin

Perhaps if you could explain the point of awards that lump together women, non-binary and transgender people we could better understand your point of view.
