self id now being debated on sunday politics

It's more light on the subject. that always helps. The first thing shown is Heather Peto saying I've always known I am a woman, in his man's voice and his man's face, saying I should be on an all woman shortlist.

This is all good, it's speaking to a public that believe what they see, he's a man. They won't remember three quarters of the words, just that women are angry this man is on an all woman shortlist.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 18/03/2018 12:13

I’m not sure I like how they presented the women.
Heather Peto came on all serious and concerned.
The women were filmed giggling and taking selfies like it was a day out. The emphasis on her ‘radical’ knecklace was not accidental.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 18/03/2018 12:23

Heather Peto with his bad hair and biker boots didn't look any more serious than we did. It's a bit radical for most people to be asked to believe he is a woman. People are left with impressions, they are used to seeing women the way we are, they are not used to seeing women the way Peto is.

The Corbyn guy was Matt Zarb-Cousins. He used to be a Corbyn spokesman. He exuded disdain and looked like he needed a good wash.
It was good to hear Sarah Smith assert that the 200 women in Labour threatening to resign is the reason Labour have shifted the day for dealing with the debate. It suggests women are making a difference. That has to encourage people to speak up.

The comments under the BBC politics show twitter are so interesting. The usual, reasoned comments from women interspersed with 'that's a bloke, duh' type comments from...... Men. Men who are obviously new to this, think its ridiculous and because they are men and don't really care what others think, will just say it out loud, and then move on, as blissfully ignorant about the wider implications as when they arrived.

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 12:37

The women outside the Houses of Parliament were obviously women, Peto is not. I think Peto comes across as a ridiculous chancer to the general public. Not doing their cause any good at all.

transcendentphobic · 18/03/2018 12:38

I thought it was a good intro for people who knew nothing about it. Most of the twitter comments were what reasonable people would think ("erm that's a bloke tho"). Apart from that Giuliana dementor who pops up everywhere with their screengrab collection!

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 18/03/2018 12:47

Ellenripley

Men saying out loud that's a bloke bursts the bubble. We need them all saying it.

AfterSchoolWorry · 18/03/2018 12:52

Looking from the outside in, i don't think that the specific message is getting through.

I think what's getting lost in translation here is that women are worried most about predators exploiting self-ID laws to access children and women.

Speaking for myself, I don't care about post-op trans women sharing bathrooms etc.

I don't think the press/media/legislators are hearing that distinction.

I don't think they can grasp the more academic feminist arguments about language and men appropriating the word woman. I don't think they care either. They just hear bytes such as 'trans exclusionary' and it makes a good story for them.

I think the message needs to be simplified down to we don't want any penises in the women's bathroom

Elendon · 18/03/2018 12:54

I know this has been said many times before but it needs repeating.

'Being trans should not be treated as an illness' says Teresa May. However a woman engaging in bodily autonomy when it comes to abortion is treated as if she has an illness (only females can access abortion rights). She needs to be signed off by two doctors and go through a psychiatric assessment in order to have this.

If the glove fits.

RealityHasALiberalBias · 18/03/2018 13:00

I didn’t see it, but if there were inaccuracies it’s important to complain to th BBC as you would any newspaper. All complaints go to the relevant department and they have to respond.

Remember journalists have to get to grips with complex subjects in little time, so if they’ve missed a point or a nuance, tell them. Maybe next time they’ll get it right.

Elendon · 18/03/2018 13:04

To add a woman can also be imprisoned if she has an abortion illegally. I don't see many self id women who are women's officers in the clp supporting women who have to go through this.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 18/03/2018 13:19

Fantastic connection there Elendon.

TemporarySign · 18/03/2018 13:52

Well thanks to Labour for ensuring I will never vote for them again. I thought New Labour was a bad enough betrayal of working people, but the evident disgust for women is entirely surpassed by mine for those who believe women should put up and shut up with whatever men think is good for men.

Terfmore · 18/03/2018 14:22

I didn't see the debate but watched the clip on twitter feed Warren says something alomg the lines of he's always been a woman. Then the film ends. I thought that was telling, any sane person would scratch their head and wonder wtf!

I am so pleased Labour have not made the decision yet.

TERFPressJunky · 18/03/2018 14:39

If I had the skill I would edit that DP programme showing the clip of how joyful Matt was at the thought of the end to all women short lists. He is in with Corbyn. This shows they are a group of men that take their stuff out on those weaker than them, women, working class mean nothing to them, they are users who think only of themselves.

Add this to the suspension interviews and the statement about the picket line battery, show women what they are voting for in May, men who think they are there to be used and abused.
