Excellent!

RosenbergW · 15/04/2018 10:02

So now they have to respond!

That's a start. I think the fact that 10000 people are not fearful of signing will massively help me to convince my friends and family that they can do it without fear too, as several have expressed worry about it. This is really a significant moment I think.

I'm so grateful to the times - which is something I never thought i would say!

Twistofanxiety · 15/04/2018 10:11

I've been watching this. So excited it's now over 10,000.

YAY!!! Wine Wine Wine

BingBongSong · 15/04/2018 10:26

So pleased. I have been watching obsessively avidly, and missed the 10,000 mark because I was prepping lunch and dinner for tonight Grin.

Now how to get to 100,000?

LizzieSiddal · 15/04/2018 10:41

It’s there! GrinFlowersStar

Presumably the spate of signings this morning is mainly from the link in the comments on the Sunday Times piece. One link in a comment that probably most ST readers won't even have looked at (comments don't show on the app). So... are there other 'public'places the petition can be publicised?

lostplot · 15/04/2018 10:45

This is brilliant news!

Winewinewinegin · 15/04/2018 10:56

Doesn't signing the petition keep names and details completely confidential? Can someone confirm that?

If so, those worried about signing in case they are threatened etc could go ahead and sign.

concretesieve · 15/04/2018 11:30

What an amazing day !! Justine in The Times, the Girl Guide letter too, and now the petition hits target !!

Many, many congratulations and deep thanks for everyone's work and commitment. Flowers

Yes, the government site is secure and confidential.

RosenbergW · 15/04/2018 12:34

Supposedly it should be confidential yes. But we live in a time when Labour party representatives make barely veiled threats about how they'll misuse access to "pretty pretty data", and keep not-so-secret hit lists of women to target for punishment.

Lots of people have serious concerns about sharing info online, including in signing petitions like this one. Serious data leaks seem to happen with regularity and it is well known that a disproportional number of trans identifying males work in IT (creating a female avatar is probably a gateway for many of them, and who knows how many claim full 'self id as a woman' based on no prior commitment other than an online ladyidentity).

But 10000+ people should make those who are nervous feel safer, I hope.

Winewinewinegin · 15/04/2018 12:46

RosenbergW

The data from the government petition site has never been hacked. The chances of this happening are EXCEEDINGLY low. Government sites have to be secure from international cyberthreads including Russia.

If anyone did access this data unauthorised it would be taken very, very seriously indeed. No TRA will be keen to have MI5 and GCHQ knocking on their door to find out who they are and what they are accessing government data for?

That's not to say it is impossible, and I do understand people being wary.

But it is such a low risk and as you say with 10,000+ others on the list what are they going to do? The cat is out of the bag now. And really this is simply a petition asking for the government to consult on how proposed changes to the law that affect women. There is nothing controversial or objectionable in it all.

Winewinewinegin · 15/04/2018 12:47

Cyberthreads (WTF?) should be cyberthreats, sorry.

seekingsun · 15/04/2018 13:03

Next target - get on the first page of the petitions list - needs about 13k for that?

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 15/04/2018 14:35

BlackeyedSusan · 15/04/2018 14:53

I expect that was a gross exaggeration on the part of a certain Labour women’s officer. I doubt they have access to any Labour data would they?

RosenbergW · 15/04/2018 17:05

Winewinewinegin

it is such a low risk

I agree with you about this and I signed it, I have heard worries though from different friends. Some have signed but been reluctant to share which is understandable because sadly trans activists have made this

There is nothing controversial or objectionable in it all.

A very touchy subject, no matter how true it should be.

But 10000 plus is a lot of support to come out of this particular closet.

AncientLights · 15/04/2018 17:57

Is there any way of telling if I've signed this before? I'm sure I must have done so but not 100% sure. I have a memory of being told ages ago that double signing invalidates a petition. Don't know if that's true. Wouldn't want to risk it.
