Defining womanhood

A friend shared this video on her feed, and I felt a need to share it here so I don’t feel lonely when I can’t follow the circular logic. It seems that a woman is someone who thinks they are one. I think. I’m not certain.

The claim is that "woman" is undefinable, it is something you just are. Also, that to be a woman means to be fighting misogyny, breaking glass ceilings and other barriers. Unclear if this has to be constant, or occasionally.

A woman is an adult human female, a person who is of the sex which can produce eggs and bear young. That's pretty much it. It would be a much shorter video with that definition.

Yes.

That’s the definition that makes sense. But then this young man would need to concede that he is not, actually, a woman.

By so many of these measures, I'm not a woman. And yet here I am, I'm definitely what they had in mind when they wrote laws to protect women.

If people want to change the definition of woman, then they need to look at the laws, the intention of those laws, and make sure they still have the same effect. If they don't, then they need to change them so they do.

Anything less really is erasing those previously known as women, and really is oppression.

It's a bit depressing that this person saw the definition of a woman as fighting misogyny. That seems to define women in relation to men rather than ad individuals in their own right.

Triliteration · 16/03/2018 06:55

They’re breaking through glass ceilings and winning the war on misogyny. Meanwhile, back in the real world, women are losing the exclusive right to call themselves women and are going backwards in the countries where most progress has already been made....

No wonder liberal feminism is so attractive. Lying to yourself makes things look way better.

Having watched that video, I now know how to pronounce cis. I've been thinking of it as ciss.

Margot seems really lovely but what nonsense. Just because you look lovely, sound calm and lovely, have lovely hair and say things that sound lovely to many people - doesn’t mean you are right. I feel mean now just saying that, I feel mean disagreeing with Margot - because they seem so lovely. But what an amount of waffle and nonsense. It’s really quite insulting to be told by a such a young male what being a woman is. I’m quite worried about society and critical thinking and common sense.

Trans is nothing new
Still men deciding what makes a woman

It is pronounced “ciss”, or maybe my chemistry tutors and all the pharmacists I know are wrong. Smile

If it means something individually for each person, then it shouldn't have a GROUP name that labels everyone the same should it?

If I intended to express something about my individuality, I wouldn't choose a word with a pre-existing meaning which encompassed 3.7 billion other people to do it.

Either it's a shared noun for a huge group of people, in which case the group characteristics are also shared and can be objectively described
or
it's an individual thing, in which case there should be 7 billion individual words for it.

I am human and female. As are 3.7 other people. Woman (or girl) is the word to describe us.

Any other characteristics a person believes themselves to possess can be better described using a more suitable word.

Ereshkigal · 16/03/2018 16:38

Woman isn't a "gender". Inane circular obfuscatory nonsense. Margot is selectively conflating gender and sex.
