Can we take legal action against Pink News?

Trumpdump · 15/03/2018 12:14

I don't know anything about the law...

But I am so fucking sick of Pink News' unfounded accusations against "terfs"! I'm sure if we started a crowd finder to legally challenge them, we would have enough to push forward?

Do we have a leg to stand on?

If not, what can we do? They are printing lies! Angry

I dont think a crowdfunder is needed, its possible to complain against online publications using the accuracy clause;

www.ipso.co.uk/make-a-complaint/

Trumpdump · 15/03/2018 18:16

What will complaining do? Will they have to sue an apology?

OP posts:
Hulo · 15/03/2018 18:18

It infuriates me. Pink News is just plain inflammatory.

TalkingintheDark · 15/03/2018 18:33

I thought this in the past, when they printed blatantly untrue and defamatory things about WPUK. So I checked that IPSO page. And it says:

You can make a complaint about any newspaper or magazine which is regulated by IPSO.

So I checked under P in the alphabetical list, and there is no sign of Pink News that I can see.

Unless there’s something I’m missing, they’re not actually regulated by IPSO in which case no way to complain about them through that channel. (Would be vey glad if someone else spots something I didn’t though!)

It is appalling, the stuff they write. It’s a proper hate factory, and the way they omit salient details like the fact the women organising/speaking last night were lesbians, whom they are supposed to represent, is vile.

Wobbleslikeaweeble · 15/03/2018 19:10

Does anyone really know that Pink News exists? I only know because I’m gender critical and on twitter. It seems to be a bit of a joke anyway.

Trumpdump · 15/03/2018 20:52

Who regulates them then? We need to stand up to them! Angry

OP posts:
thebewilderness · 15/03/2018 21:01

They are obviously a professional hate group that targets women.

Elletorro · 15/03/2018 21:04

Which was the police force that was treating sexist street harassment as hate crime? Was it Devon or somewhere? I’d go to them. Not got a clue about criminal law though

UpstartCrow · 15/03/2018 21:13

You may have uncovered something here, OP. Pink News used to be a newspaper, so maybe they've gone the Fox 'entertainment' route?

Interesting- Hope Pink, formally Telford Vegan, is currently asking Pink News for their details as he wants to sue them for libel!

Pink News is not regulated by IPSO, or any other body, seemingly.
PN’s excuse for this seems to be that as a “global online-only” publication IPSO can’t currently accommodate it.
This is nonsense, of course. IPSO manages to cover MailOnline, the world’s biggest online newspaper site (which is formally separate from the Daily Mail) and Buzzfeed UK.
Not much can be done about this since media regulation here is voluntary. But it can and should be pointed out regularly and loudly that Pink N is not regulated, refuses to be regulated and offers complainants no independent channel for adjudication.

pink News should be regularly (and politely) Challenged over this, and other media (Guardian, Independnt) who cite Pink as a source should be challenged too. (See today’s Guardian piece).

Who is running the Prick News parody account? It’s causing all sorts of confusion...

MrGHardy · 17/03/2018 18:48

If @PosieParker is being investigated for repeating the words of the person complaining, then surely lying like Pink News is doing has much more of a basis for legal action.

Trumpdump · 17/03/2018 18:54

I agree! We have serious grounds for complaint I think! Problem is, there's no regulator to complain to...

VaguelyAware · 17/03/2018 19:02

Is there a precedent? Are there any other unregulated online publications that have been successfully sued in the UK?

This is why we need misogyny to formally be classed as a hate crime. Much easier to name the problem.

Nosetothesun · 17/03/2018 19:06

If Pink News published erroneously that trans people have been called 'parasitic' when they weren't which has been widely spread and believed then aren't they & the writer responsible for the considerable distress caused and therefore guilty of a 'hate crime'?

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 17/03/2018 19:21

The journalist is the one to prosecute.

She probably only got paid 100 quid so will back off in minutes...

Someone should tweet at her that there is a crowdfunder for a lawsuit for slander. Prick news won't have the money to defend her.

Wanderingwomb · 17/03/2018 19:24

Does Nottingham still treat misogyny as a hate crime or was that just a trial?

TerranceandPhilip · 17/03/2018 20:02

Does Nottingham still treat misogyny as a hate crime or was that just a trial?

They recorded misogynistic "hate incidents" they didn't have the power to change the actual law, so couldn't record it as a hate crime. As it stands there are only a handful of crimes which can be aggravated with specific hate "qualifiers" of which misogyny is not, and has never been one.

ALittleBitOfButter · 17/03/2018 20:08

I actually think there was enough detail in that article to help people reach peak trans. It wasn't as bad as i'd thought from the reaction here.

Trumpdump · 17/03/2018 20:29

Is there anyone on the trans boards with actual legal knowledge though? If yes, can someone pm them and ask them to take a look at this thread?

If there is grounds to sue, then we can start a crowdfunder?

If they back down, I want the article removed and an apology.

OP posts:
Trumpdump · 17/03/2018 20:30

@ALittleBitOfButter

It's not just the parasites article, it's every "terf" article! They constantly mis-represent us, and I am sick of it!

OP posts:
sleep5 · 17/03/2018 20:34

I think Pink News has only ever been online. There was a separate publication called the Pink Paper which has no relation to PN.
