nonbinary.wiki/wiki/Assigned_gender_at_birth

Surely no matter how gender uncritical you are, no one can agree that girls are "assigned female at birth" based on their lack of a penis. Confused Angry. I won't get in to "what they consider a penis" for now. Hmm that deserves a thread of it's own. But the sheer misogny of women just being humans who lack a dick.

Assigned gender at birth is what people usually really mean when they speak of a person's sex. This is because a person's sex is much more difficult to determine than most people believe. When a person is born, a doctor assigns a gender by only looking for one thing: the presence or absence of what they consider to be a penis.

Grrr! It isn't 'accurate or respectful' to use the terms 'biological sex', 'genetic sex' or 'natal girl/boy'. So... any reference to physical reality is out, then.

Fekko · 11/03/2018 14:01

Assign - not confirm?

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 11/03/2018 14:29

That's all bullshit!! Nobody is 'assigned' a gender at birth. we're born and our sex is recorded. Everybody knows this and and we shouldn't be complicit in a lie that damages all of us for the sake of a few delusional people who need mental health therapy rather than be pandered to.

It gives me an image of 'The Gender Assigner':tm: strutting down the maternity ward like the Easter Bunny, or maybe have a load of pink and blue balls in a bag and just pick them out like on Sky Sports when they're picking fixtures for the FA Cup.

turnipfarmers · 11/03/2018 14:36

I'm so tempted to edit that entry, politely and respectfully of course to give the alternative view.

Treesybreezy · 11/03/2018 14:40

Aaaaaand there it is, the mighty penis. Apparently we can't speak about female biology cos it doesn't actually exist!

I am feeling like drawing (badly) a comic where all the tense showdowns, the fight scenes, the taking control etc is basically a cock off - the penis is whipped out for a 'i'm bigger than you brah!'. So much seems to boil down to a penis and I'm fed up of the ridiculousness of it.

hackmum · 11/03/2018 14:46

It's very Freudian, isn't it, that idea that either you have a penis or you don't. A woman, with her marvellously complex reproductive anatomy, gives birth, and then you look at a child and decide whether it's male or female based on whether it has a penis or doesn't. Do these people not know anything about biology?

turnip - all you have to do is change "penis" to "vulva".

MIngerDynasty · 11/03/2018 14:54

Please can someone change all the penises to vulva?

That would be excellent.

I'm so fed up of everything being about the penis. Women are just people without penises. I might get a tshirt that says "Vaginas are fucking rad".

It’s absolute nonsense, and if it were just some youth fad it wouldn’t be so worrying, but it’s an out and out attack on women and an attempt to reinforce patriarchal structures.

The patriarchy is based entirely upon the oppression of women because of their biology. To claim that sex is a construct and gender is innate leaves women with no basis to resist their oppression.

I was thinking this morning about what it actually means when people say that a transwoman “lives as” a woman. Here’s what I do most days:

  • get up, clean my teeth, go to the loo, have a shower, get dressed
  • take a hormone pill to control my ovulation and menstruation
  • walk the dog
  • cycle to work, work at a desk, come home, walk the dog again
  • cook dinner, watch telly, go to bed

At weekends I might do some DIY or some more involved cooking. Sometimes I go on holiday. Every so often I menstruate. Every three years I have a cervical smear.

The only way any of this differs from my husband’s life is the stuff that relates to my biological sex. Everything else is literally identical, except that I have a “woman’s” bike (i.e. it has a lower bar and a skirt guard).

So what the hell does it mean when people say they have been living as the opposite sex?

MIngerDynasty · 11/03/2018 15:00

Female biology controls literally everything but we're obsessed with dick.

Female biology sustains life for 9 months.

Then can help to sustain that very life for years after birth.

Periods determine when you can have PIV sex (if you prefer not to risk a blood bath)

Our reproductive system means women have taken hormonal bc for 40 years.

The world revolves around women's bodies but as a society we focus on these largely useless little dangly bits.

MIngerDynasty · 11/03/2018 15:02

while I am horrified by the entire wiki entry I was trying to make a point about the old "women are humans without penises" thing. You know, not women are humans WITH vaginas and vulva and ovaries.

Constantly defining women as some kind of inferiour man.

OP posts:
Pomeranio9834 · 11/03/2018 15:11

What specifically does it mean by "what they consider a penis"????

Surely a penis is a penis?!

RealityHasALiberalBias · 11/03/2018 15:13

The ideology is disturbing in its Luddite, anti-science rhetoric as well, wrapped up in a cloak of right-on liberalism.

Biological sex is a scientifically-quantifiable reality. Gender is not.

But then, we’ve all had enough of experts haven’t we?

MIngerDynasty · 11/03/2018 15:14

They could be refering to intersex conditions or to transwomen who call their penises "large clitorises".

OP posts:
Pomeranio9834 · 11/03/2018 15:18

😯😯😯😯 is that actually a thing?! (Sorry I am slightly behind the bandwagon on this)

... Did I just peaktrans?!?!

ElenOfTheWays · 11/03/2018 15:19

This is the "men and non-men" thing again, isn't it?
Gah!

SeniorRita · 11/03/2018 15:19

So what the hell does it mean when people say they have been living as the opposite sex?

Sorry, we're all doing womaning wrong. I've been watching these trans women on Twitter and this is the day we should be having:

Get up
Spend eleventy billion hours on our skin, hair, nails, make up
Get dressed up in provocative clothing, something short round the thighs, low round the man-boobs, preferably slightly school girl looking
Take four million selfies until happy with one - probably the one of us pouting gormlessly at the camera, usually in very red lipstick (see, I is a woman!), lounging on a fluffy throw, or in front of a fake fireplace (no, it identifies as a fireplace, so it IS one)
Play on Twitter for the rest of the day telling everyone how I am a woman

We would all do well to follow this code, only then will we really feel like cis women.

MIngerDynasty · 11/03/2018 15:20

Yes, unfortunately so. Envy

OP posts:
whoputthecatout · 11/03/2018 15:53

I prefer to think of men as people who lack a uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva.

SeniorRita · 11/03/2018 16:07

And people who lack a uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva - as MEN!

(i.e. it works both ways)

Stilettosandan0venglove · 11/03/2018 18:58

while I am horrified by the entire wiki entry I was trying to make a point about the old "women are humans without penises" thing. You know, not women are humans WITH vaginas and vulva and ovaries.

Yes, sorry, I did get your original penis point, fumed at it, then got distracted reading the rest of that shit. It's like the idea of penis envy, which has always pissed me off no end, as if what women have is the lack of a penis, rather than the presence of a vagina, clit etc. It's not a void! A ridiculous misunderstanding that only a man could make.

Also I keep thinking of Queenie from Blackadder, assigned at birth 'a boy without a winkie'.

hipsterfun · 12/03/2018 01:36

Sorry, we're all doing womaning wrong. I've been watching these trans women on Twitter and this is the day we should be having:

For all of half a second I thought it would be interesting, as a woman, to ‘live as a woman’, as described.

Too much like hard work.

Beansonapost · 12/03/2018 02:41

Sorry, we're all doing womaning wrong. I've been watching these trans women on Twitter and this is the day we should be having...

Oh that would be pleasant... if only I didn't have children to deal with!

Periods to contend with!

Or a job and reality!

thebewilderness · 12/03/2018 03:04

Aristotle, born 384bce, argued that women are failed men. His ignorance may or may not be excusable. In 2018 this is inexcusable.
Zombie lies never die because men never stop telling them to one another.

DryHeave · 12/03/2018 03:19

“God be praised, it's a miracle. A boy without a winkle!”

Batteriesallgone · 12/03/2018 04:14

It’s ridiculous. Not least because nowadays so many babies the sex is found out at the 20 week scan. And what they look for then is the testicles. Baby boy testicles are the noticeable bit not the penis, even at birth. A quick look to confirm sex, is looking for testicles vs labia. Not presence or absence of penis (although testicles and absence of penis would be spotted I’m sure!).
