^So I read this Twitter thread today, started by a paramedic called Lisa, and noticed it was SO quickly derailed by screams of "whataboutery", in this case "what about trans women?" (more about whataboutery here from this excellent blog that I discovered in this sub and immediately bookmarked: victimfocus.wordpress.com/2018/01/03/stop-asking-me-what-about-men/ ) to the extent that the original point of the tweet - female paramedic abused by man she'd arrived to rescue - was completely lost. I read it this morning and couldn't believe that a woman making a flippant joke about not having a Y chromosome and having breasts turned into a flaming re. "bio essentialism". Lisa also tweeted "Remember, a woman gave birth to you once" and immediately gets schooled on "not all people who give birth identify as women" and "cisgender narratives are so dominant!" (gosh, I wonder why?)

Lisa tweets later on to say:

Tonight I learned why women don’t share their experiences. The world is terrible. People are terrible. My phone is blowing up with hatred like I’ve never seen in my whole life. Shame on you. I’m a real person. You send your mean @‘s into the void, forgetting exactly that.

Helen Lewis retweets Lisa and says:

Let’s all be honest about what’s happening in cases like this. Gender theory is just being used as an excuse to “correct” women constantly. Men don’t get this when they talk casually and colloquially about being a man

Frankly, it’s a testament to women’s socialisation to be nice and sensitive to other’s feelings that this doesn’t get pointed out more. No one has bombarded @arobertwebb with demands that he talk about the small percentage of men who have vaginas

Hadley Freeman retweets Helen Lewis and adds:

When I wrote about my miscarriage last year I got multiple tweets and emails telling me I was being transphobic for writing about the chaos of female biology. Do men who write about, say, prostate cancer receive similar? I’m guessing the answer is no.

I would quite like to buy all of these women a fucking drink.

Apologies for any incoherent writing. It took me ages to compile all those links Grin

Poor woman's deleted her account. FFS.

OvaHere · 09/03/2018 19:13

They are doing a piss poor job at retaining allies. Pretty sure Lisa has experienced rapid onset peak trans.

CapnHaddock · 09/03/2018 19:16

Lisa Marie, the woman paramedic who has been vilified for saving a man's life, has left Twitter. Fucking bastard men.

53rdWay · 09/03/2018 19:34

That Hadley Freeman tweet made me want to cry. How could anyone berate her for talking about her own miscarriage and think they’re somehow standing up for feminism? How?

HeyRoly · 09/03/2018 19:40

Oh shit, I didn't realise that Lisa had deleted her account. I hope she's safe, hasn't been doxxed, and her job isn't at risk.

FFS.

I just honestly feel like I'm living in a dystopia, where the thought police roam social media and destroy women (it's always women) for stating simple facts. How did this happen?

I lost an entire friendship group because I said transwomen weren't women. I said that people born and socialised male don't understand the first thing about being female. I said "woman" wasn't a feeling. I thought a group of educated, enlightened women would agree. But it turns out that they considered me to be as despicable as any racist. Someone messaged me privately to say they agreed but they daren't do so publically. This is not a dirty little secret. This is the truth.

Looks like Lisa has deleted her Twitter profile Sad

QuentinSummers · 09/03/2018 19:52

Sorry, I missed the new page

AnotherQuoll · 09/03/2018 20:08

This is the sort of treatment women are getting for doing nothing wrong. Yet some people want to admonish Venice, Julia and.Miranda for.playful selfies in front of abusive transactivists.

By rights, the people who. bullied Lisa Marie into deleting, should be suspended.

AngryAttackKittens · 09/03/2018 20:47

So angry on the behalf of both Lisa and Hadley. What kind of person sees a woman grieving the loss of a wanted child and thinks, hey, this would be a great opportunity for some "activism"?

TRAs are terrible human beings.

ChattyLion · 09/03/2018 21:27

Ugh. Horrible narcissistic bullying. Sad
Hope Lisa is OK after all that and hope more high profile people wake up to this and signal their support. Sorry to hear it Roly

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 09/03/2018 21:39

If nothing else it blows the 'why can't you just be nice?' argument out of the water. Being nice to these people doesn't help them and it doesn't help us. The only thing to do is get the hell away from them as fast as we can and redouble our efforts not to let them into our spaces.

Half of me thinks, "Keep going, you idiots, you're doing our job for us" and the other half rages at the hurt they are causing while they do it.

NotLinkedInSnowedIn · 09/03/2018 22:46

Wow. I'm glad people posted to defend her. She is right in despairing that she cannot even describe herself but transwomen can of course.

And no matter how a person identifies, a woman did give birth to them Confused

That is shocking. Poor woman.
Not to derail but have you all seen the online bashing that Ru Paul has been getting too?

I suppose if they were old school trans, as some call it, and proud of being a transwoman then the drag race wouldnt be too much of a stretch

But anyone who firmly believes that a transwomen is exactly the same as a women needs to back off Ru

Women arent allowed on drag race

Mrskeats · 09/03/2018 23:25

Oh ive had an education this week
Apparently women do drag and are called bio queens. And so trans women and women should be allowed to enter drag race.
Which surely defeats the whole purpose? How can a woman dress up as a woman?
It can all fuck off now frankly.

MrGHardy · 09/03/2018 23:26

Fartniss
"Infertile women, women without breasts, women without uteruses, women with penises... the full spectrum of female experience.

And yet only one 'type' of woman read Hadley's heartbreaking article - which ends with her carrying the ashes of her child in a bag in her pocket while she rides a train home - and thought 'but what about me?'"

Indeed, indeed. The whole trans/queer/whatever that T+ is full of narcissistic, entitled, shallow, narrow-minded, snowflakes. How many men and women are there who don't particular enjoy/agree with being in the binary? Many, many, many and yet you don't see them harping on about how they don't "accept/conform to society". There is already someone using the pronoun xe? Can't be that then, I'm gonna be xer then.

Trumpdump · 09/03/2018 23:26

Why aren't women allowed to do drag race? Confused

Mrskeats · 09/03/2018 23:28

Because drag traditionally is men who are dressed as women.

DryHeave · 09/03/2018 23:40

Transplaining.

Mrskeats · 09/03/2018 23:54

Transplaining. Genius.
Can’t believe people are getting chased off Twitter. It’s like a witch hunt.

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2018 00:17

Kevin @ tolnoknowistodo
Trans enjoy the same rights & freedoms women & black people have fought to achieve: voting, own/rent a home, employment, love whom they wish, military, education, sports, politics, etc. However, feeling “marginalized” because people won’t lie to you is not a civil rights issue.
