International Women’s Day and I’m just Depressed

Keep getting these celebratory emails dropping into my inbox and they’re merely filling me with doom, as I think: do you mean women who were born women, too? Are we even included any more? I feel like it’s one of the worst times to be a woman in my lifetime.

I've never been a fan of IWD before, it seemed unnecessary and a bit self congratulatory. This year I was more in to it feeling women's rights are under attack by men who claim to want to be women whilst hating real women and wanting to take their places on lists and podiums (? podia?). I was disappointed the mass resignation of women from Labour never happened although I wimped out when I resigned from the SGP and just didn't bother renewing.
I listened to Talk Radio this morning on the way to work for the first time having high hopes of J H-B only to be disappointed with her dismissing women's work as not really of equal value to the men's work, ignoring the many women who work in care homes dealing with other people's shit and urine and gently heaving immobile folk about every day. Dismissing dinner ladies was her best analogy compared to the heroic bin"men"..

I do agree. I have just effectively received a pay cut at work - we have a huge gender pay gap anyway, utterly sidelined, struggle in all ways. Think sexual attitudes to women are worsening

Weebo · 08/03/2018 22:25

I felt really uncomfortable with that Google Doodle, Wipe.

The message is basically that an individual's sexual orientation must be discarded when it comes to relationships with transpeople - Otherwise, they are irrational/unkind/angry IE bigoted and transphobic.

Haven't the LGBT fought for years to make it clear that sexual orientation is something that a person cannot choose or change?

colouringinagain · 08/03/2018 22:27

Me too Sad and especially for my dd.

HairyBallTheorem · 08/03/2018 22:34

A priest sweary? Did you ask him why, in that case, Irish self ID law has a special exemption so the hallowed cloisters of the Catholic church don't have to be sullied by the presence of "man bag"?

HairyBallTheorem · 08/03/2018 22:35

Man vag

I hate fucking autocorrect.at least I have taught my phone to swear.

dragongirlx · 08/03/2018 22:35

Me too, I work for a largish local authority who never do anything for international women's day. So I complained cause they celebrate every other ducking thing. Their response get a local charity to donate sanitary products to the council for the staff and to put something on the intranet to ask what the women were doing. They would have been better off donating sanitary products to the homeless hostels and refuges I commission and monitor and thinking up a way to empower the women that actually do the majority of the work

dragongirlx · 08/03/2018 22:37

That should have said fucking Damn autocorrect

There are a lot more critical thinking women out there than you realise. I’ve become very apt at dropping little bits of information, regarding self ID, into conversation. Starting subtle conversations and taking it from there.

Because of that approach, I met the most wonderful female vet today and she was all the way to the top of peak trans and sending out messenger pigeons, to pass it on.

Ok, so I'm throwing you a bone here. You have to start it, work out where it came from, and then you will find pure unadultarated joy

That was my fb contribution to IWD too, Miaow. The simpering postings from men were really getting on my thruppennies.

I'm angry, so fucking angry. I don't need men to pop up and make tokenistic comments, I want to see them DO something.

Like PPs, I'm in my 50s and did not expect women to be in a worse position now than they were in the 70s.
Raging doesn't come close.

Been a member of the green party for many years but have just seen their facebook IWD post.

*Change is long overdue. But it is coming.

Happy International Women's Day to all women 💜

Cis women, trans women, women of all genders and none.*

Elendon · 09/03/2018 11:47

Well I want to thank the woman who supported me on a thread regarding trans issues being posted on IWD. Facebook. Her response was along the lines that a penis is not a lady dick (rinse and repeat). I had said that Pink news was lesphobic and homophobic.

Thank you Flowers

Elendon · 09/03/2018 11:51

Flowers Miaow

My hairdresser was brutally murdered by her ex. I remember him coming into the salon and she tensed up so much. Brutal man.
