Can someone explain to me why Rachel is a laughing stock, mocked and shamed for taking AA women’s opportunities, but TIM are embraced? I genuinely don’t see any difference. Biology is undeniable but if we feel we are different to what is in the mirror and in our dna, why is one group celebrated and the other torn apart?

because the world has gone mad

Thegirlinthefireplace · 08/03/2018 15:43

The difference is that misogyny and sexism are massively more acceptable than racism.

NotAllTimsWearCapes · 08/03/2018 15:44

It’s very simple. She isn’t a man.

OvaHere · 08/03/2018 16:40

Her son makes a good point in the trailer.

To paraphrase ' identify how you want but if you make it public and involve others people will get pissed and it will come back to bite you'

He doesn't look very old but seems to have made the connection that someones subjective self identity affects more than just them. He seems less than keen on being involved in the documentary.

OutyMcOutface · 08/03/2018 16:44

I would imagine that it is because she claims to be anti-racism yet her belief that your race determines your personality, beliefs, taste or, culture is racist in itself. It would be the equivalent of a trans person campaigning to breakdown gender stereotypes (which clearly isn’t on their he agenda of letchildren try things that belong to both stereotypes then force them to pick one).

FencingFightingTorture35 · 08/03/2018 16:54

Because gender is an internal feeling that you're born with. You literally have a pink or a blue brain. These sometimes get put into the wrong body so they don't match up with your external appearance which is when you are transgender.

Race is only about your external appearance. It would be completely stupid to suggest you can switch race. There is no internal component to it.

Do I sound convincing? I'm trying my best here. Grin

I think much of what pissed off a lot of the black community was the fact that she took a job that was ring fenced for a black woman thereby denying one the job.
A very well paid job too if I remember correctly.

LonginesPrime · 08/03/2018 17:21

As I said in the other thread, I think she's a very important person in the whole trans debate.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 08/03/2018 17:36

Much like Trans women have

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/03/2018 17:49

I think it is partly becuase she is a woman

Why are gay men who are effeminate at times celebrated but lesbians who maybe are more masculine are not

If men step out of their ideal role it’s often celebrated for women it isn’t

LonginesPrime · 08/03/2018 18:19

And because lots of black people are men and/or rightly angry at the way they and their families have been treated over the years by the class in which she enjoys a huge privilege. Choosing to identify into an oppressed class, having the audacity to do so by deception for so long, taking advantage of shortlists put in place to make situations more equitable for the oppressed class and now being so open about it and continuing to assert that she's black just goes to show how much privilege she enjoys.

She can't muscle into a community that doesn't want her, though. It only works if people in that community are accepting of her. Women have been socialised to be accepting and not make a fuss, which I think is the difference.

I think that the problem with this is that many of the arguments comparing gender to race in this debate will be shut down as they will reach a point where people will inevitably compare the experiences of black people as an oppressed class to those of women as an oppressed class. So I think feminists will be silenced again, not in terms of transphobia but with accusations of racism and/or minimising the oppression of black people as there are many people out there for whom black oppression is a real, obvious thing but the oppression of women is all in our minds.

TheVicarOfNibbleswicke · 08/03/2018 18:22

You literally have a pink or blue brain?? Is that an actual joke??

TheVicarOfNibbleswicke · 08/03/2018 18:27

Oops I just saw this is on the feminism board...

LizzieSiddal · 08/03/2018 18:34

I hope a lot of people watch this on Netflix and make a comparison to self Id.

holycheeseplant · 08/03/2018 18:37

What I find most ironic is that she managed to win a bursary specifically for African American art students to study art. As her "art" was so "convincingly" African American (what ever that is) and she looked like she was black. This was then questioned / criticised later on.

Sound familiar? (AWS??)

HairyBallTheorem · 08/03/2018 18:40

Vicar it's a reference to "I am Leo" on CBBC, which explains being transgender by showing a conveyor belt of little stick figures in skirts or trousers having blue or pink brains placed in their heads and "oops, ever so often the brain-inserting machine makes a mistake and puts a pink brain into a stick figure with trousers on." So yes, a joke. A rather bleak joke, but a joke nonetheless.

The idea that actually all of the brains should be a patchwork of lots and lots of different colours, according to individual human's interests, and that (shock horror) under the trousers some of the stick figures might be female... This would be far too complex to include.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 08/03/2018 18:42

I hope it does peak a few people.

If you accept that anyone can self identify as something they physically aren’t then both Rachel and TW must be valid.

Otherwise you can accept neither.
