Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Pilgrim Tucker, who spoke at the meeting last Tuesday, being stitched up on TV tomorrow?

She has tweeted that she was invited to talk about self ID on the Victoria Derbyshire Show being aired tomorrow at 9am.

But she had no idea that the interviewer was a transactivist. They only told her afterwards.

How much longer is this bias going to be pushed by the BBC? Will a gender critical woman be invited to interview a transactivist.? You know, in the interests of ‘fairness’.

How are women supposed to counter the #nodebate when it is being rigorously upheld by the BBC?

I sincerely hope the programme is fair and balanced, despite my misgivings...

more men than women oops I mean more women than men 🤭

PositivelyPERF · 05/03/2018 15:24

I don’t like VD, but I think the discussion would have went very differently if it had been a male interviewer. We’ve all seen enough male interviewers to know there would have been loads of interruptions, subtle ridiculing and mansplaining. It was so refreshing that everyone was allowed to finish speaking. It was probably an horrific shock to the the two TIM guests that they had to wait their turn and THEIR FEELINGS weren’t central.

I wonder how much flack VD will take for not standing up to the most two ‘most vulnerable’ members on the panel. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which ones they were. 🤔😁

LizzieSiddal · 05/03/2018 16:19

I’ve been very impressed with a lot of interviews I’ve seen VD do, she actually allows people to speak.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 05/03/2018 16:26

Oh I wish I could watch this (abroad so it's all blocked) in the meantime I have to get all the news through you lovely people.

What did they say on the BBC at lunchtime?

Elendon · 05/03/2018 16:29

Yes, I thought Derbyshire chaired a good discussion.

If, for example, a male friend of yours is involved in a terrible accident and their penis/testicles are totally removed. Would you still refer to them with He/Him pronouns down the pub?

The answer is, of course, yes. So what does that tell us about Gender identity?

This twit annoys me on twitter. What has it got to do with 'gender identity' fgs. If someone has their male genitals ''removed' (and this wouldn't happen anyway- they would try and patch up what was there) they would still be male all over - just without the testosterone, which might be 'replaced' (as in actual hrt, rather than cross sex hormones!!!)

Women have ovaries removed all the time and they do not stop being women. He probably has never noticed that. In fact ovaries gradually cease to function at all as we get older. One does not morph into a man Hmm

Women on twitter have my utmost respect - it is not good for the blood pressure.

Wobbleslikeaweeble · 05/03/2018 16:46

I almost felt sorry for the 2 TW - Rebecca seems a nice person but they looked confused and a bit lost - i guess if you block everyone who questions you and live in a pro trans bubble - you never have to form valid, convincing arguments. I felt it seemed to be dawning on VD what some of the issues were and that they were valid. The woman commenting on her time in the refuge was excellent.

I’d liked to have seen Peto, Rebecca and Clara standing next to the women - they looked like they would tower over most women. Peto “i’m as valid as any woman” was just ridiculous.

No wonder TAs want all debate closed down - totally flummoxed.

.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/03/2018 17:25

I'm just watching this now - the debate was excellent! I'm very impressed.

OlennasWimple · 05/03/2018 17:28

Here's VD's Twitter: twitter.com/VictoriaLIVE

There are clips of the discussion panel in there, as well as plenty of comments

Can I say how brave I thought Emma was? Her experience was clearly still impacting on her daily life, so to go onto national TV and be part of a challenging conversation about her personal experiences was brilliant.

(And I have a girl crush on Sarah and Nic Blush )

Sparkyduchess · 05/03/2018 17:30

Pilgrim, Nic and Sarah did very well. Peto is just a giant tool.

Rebecca root was soooo disingenuous, and the other TIM whose name I didn’t get was vastly out of his depth. Well worth watching, and at least some discussion was had.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/03/2018 17:32

I keep reading VD as venereal disease Blush

Elendon · 05/03/2018 17:38

Ovaries function for all of your life. They just don't respond to producing eggs anymore because they have all been depleted. If you do not have ovaries, your body has stored oestrogen in fat and other hormonal receptors take over and produce low levels of oestrogen.

Ovaries are essential to sustaining pregnancy in the first trimester until the placenta takes over.

They really do work hard for women all of their life.

colouringinagain · 05/03/2018 17:50

Glad the debate was good and balanced.

I always use prostate cancer when someone says that female hormones actually make men into women 🙄 I bring up my FIL, who has been on hormone treatment and anti androgens for over 10 years, he has grown breast tissue and his genitals have shrunk to nothing, I ask if he’s a Woman now and funnily enough never get a response.

Will this help?

Elendon · 05/03/2018 18:28

Hi Nosetothesun and Elendon I’m a member of the hysterectomy club too and had everything removed at 37. I’m still a woman, as are those poor, foolish young women that think by doing the same, they will become men.

My dear late husband had hormone treatment to slow down his terminal prostate cancer and became impotent, his chest took on the appearance of breasts. He was still a man.

RoughtBootedOne · 05/03/2018 18:52

I don't know the story of every woman that spoke today. All were brave. Sarah and Nic risked their careers. Emma gave out personal pain. Pilgrim treated so badly by her CLP. FlowersFlowersFlowersFlowers

I always got the impression VD was a woke TRA, she chaired that well. Flowers

AnotherTerfyNameChange · 05/03/2018 18:53

colouringinagain yes that bit of the website was obviously written before the programme was made as it only references the pre-recorded interviews. Interesting that the only images are of TW.

I found the studio section excellent. Nic and Sarah spoke so assertively and it evidently took the others by surprise as they just gaped and wittered on about hysterectomies and so on. I loved how Sarah kept coming back to the point that it's MALE VIOLENCE that we - women and trans people - fear. The others couldn't disagree with that of course! I think this is the way forward. Keep referencing male violence.

I did think that perhaps VD had expected slightly more transphobic remarks, (im sure she was given plenty of pep talks by the TRA lobby at the BBC!) and she seemed almost surprised that the debate was so civil. Also impressed by her manners - eg apologising for talking over Sarah. You dont get that with Piers Morgan Grin

BigDeskBob · 05/03/2018 19:10

I had the impression that it wasn't the debate that the MIT expected. Rebecca just looked confused - especially when saying that self id would still include checks. Clara(?) just answered the questions they wanted to, not the the questions asked.

And I agree all of the women came across really well, calm and factual. Their arguments were well thought out, reasonable and they were not being the hysterical banshees that women usually are Wink
