Why aren't TIMs called transvestites any more?

Is because the TRA don't like it? Because they realise that everyone knows what transvestite means where as 'transwomen' is much less understood term. It could mean either a man or a woman presenting as the opposite sex (I thought it was the later till recently), it implies they are a subset of woman and implies that they have actually had a 'sex change' op. If we're not using the term because the TRAs do t want us to why are we going along with it - after all they use 'cis' 'terf' etc.

Because the implication is that neither they nor anyone else believes that they actually are a woman - they are a man who likes to dress and act as ‘a woman’ whatever that actually means.

The new breed believes that they really are a woman (male anatomy and all). It’s a new thing. Tiny minority but whipping up a storm by bully-boy methods that UKIP and Donald Trump would be proud of.

Because isn't a 'transvestite' someone who is a man who dresses in woman's clothing (the 'vest' part)?

Whereas TRAs claim that transgender people can actually 'change sex' and become an 'actual' woman.

Which of course everyone knows they can't, but they will keep on banging that drum regardless.

Obv not just male to female. The female to male contingent seem to be less vocal and just get on with it (not nearly so much violence, threats or drama).

No, they claim that they have always been women, just "in the wrong body", and any surgery they have/hormones they take is to align their physical self with their "real" gender. Whereas transvestites don't generally make claims about being women, they just like dressing up as women.

Sittinonthefloor · 04/03/2018 12:30

I understand why the TRAs don't want to call the selves transvestites - but why has everyone else stopped?

Perhaps to claim to world ‘woman’ and re label actual born women? Cuckoo in the nest.

Patodp · 04/03/2018 14:02

I think everyone else has stopped because it's been denounced as "offensive" and probably "literal violence".
They're edging closer and closer to owning the word "Woman".

So is it ok for us / me to describe as a transvestite a man who hasn't had surgery but wears a dress - especially, for example, the part time cross dressers like the city chap who wears a dress in Fridays (I can't quite remember the details). Or will I be called a bigot? (I am a bit afraid of MITs so 'terf' although offensive is partially accurate).

When they raised the transgender umbrella in 2005 it was declared inappropriate and rude to accurately describe transgender men. After being corrected a dozen times we learn to obey the restrictions men put on our language.
