Do you personally believe there is a war on women?

I've seen the expression "war on women" twice on the net today, and I don't recall ever seeing it before. The reason it caught my eye and intrigued me is, I have been telling my close friends for a few years now that if you "join the dots" * of what men are doing to women, worldwide, non-stop, it amounts to just that: a war on women.

The few people I have told think I am either imagining it, exaggerating, paranoid or a conspiracy theorist.

I'm wondering how many Mnetters would now agree with the statement that the present state of affairs amounts to "a war on women"?

(*e.g. the violence depicted in porn, sexual harassment and assault everywhere from Hollywood to primary school, trafficking for prostitution, FGM, domestic abuse and murder, and now the angry trans agenda).

The war has been raging ever since we settled down and started owning property, growing our own food etc...

We have never had it so good (and this is pretty shitty)!!

i do think we're in another backlash. I re-read "Backlash" by Susan Faludi last year and I was struck by the parallels.

It's true that we've never had it so good (in the west). But there's still so far to go, and we seem to slip back every few decades.

It was more to discuss it and let everyone here think about it and express her opinion, rather than to reach a fixed conclusion.

Yes. A few years ago I’d have said no, there was nothing concerted and that we were moving slowly, jerkily, in the right direction.

I no longer think that. The past three or four years have had too many things that have changed my mind:

Mayor of Vienna telling women to dress modestly to avoid ‘inflaming’ young male migrants, rather than expecting said young men to abide by the LAW of the land

Mainstream media attacking women from all sides - the left wing press seems to have a hierarchy of victimhood with women firmly at the bottom.

Women’s rights being subsumed to men’s rights in all spheres - recent cases of domestic violence perps not being prosecuted because ‘she should have asked his family to step in’ (religious family, totally let down by the law.)

The MRA movements on the web and IRL

Attacks on women’s reproductive rights endorsed by presidents and legislators.

Polish abortion law that was posited

Gender recognition act.

I can no longer support the opinion that we are moving in the right direction. There is a widespread crackdown on women’s rights and autonomy.

Fair play for women's website is down.

I guess if it turns out to be TRAs, you could say there's a type of war going on.

I don't think it's ever changed tbh. Online media is what's changed and porn.

I agree, I thought the same thing. This is definitely a backlash. I recommend reading this book to all the women here.

Yes there is.

BlooperReel · 26/03/2018 16:26

Yes, I think it used to be far more stealthy, because many went along with the status quo, as more women challenge that, speak up for equality, for their rights etc, the more feverish the 'war' has become.

I have 2 daughters and am so so worried for their future, the fear of them being attacked particularly is palpable, particularly as my oldest approaches secondary school age. I genuinely worry I will end up losing the plot and going to prison if it happens, I never realised how visceral a reaction a threat to your children could provoke until she experienced bullying, and I dread to think what I am capable of to be honest.

I see so many stories recently that make me think it's the start of a Handmaids Tale style anti-woman totalitarianism.

Is anyone on twitter? I was thinking we could co-opt #UnderHisEye whenever we re-tweet news stories about erasure of women or male violence. It's a simple thing but could help to get younger feminists or women thinking because it's a popular TV show, esp with younger feminists who seem to be buying into the 'transwomen are women' mantra.
