Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A trans resource thread

Geronimoleapinglizards · 22/02/2018 10:46

I thought it would be really useful to have one thread solely dedicated to useful resources relating to the trans issue.

This issue is so overwhelming and almost on a daily basis I see women on mn saying 'I've never given this issue much thought but I just read x,y,z and am horrified' We need a thread to direct people to or to refer to ourselves which has the science and the main blogs and websites which have compiled info.

Apologies if there's already something like this. I haven't seen one.

Lots of great twitter accounts for this. Here's one highlighting what happens to the narrative when women with penises edit and write for a feminist magazine: mobile.twitter.com/everydayobey

This is a great lecture by a top American pediatric endocrinologist about how things got to the stage we're at today. Very interesting:

The Transadvocate piece where the lead author of the PLOS study journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0016885 is an exercise in lying about one's findings.

I'm tired of picking this one to pieces.

From the interview:

Dhejne: The individual in the image who is making claims about trans criminality, specifically rape likelihood, is misrepresenting the study findings. The study as a whole covers the period between 1973 and 2003. If one divides the cohort into two groups, 1973 to 1988 and 1989 to 2003, one observes that for the latter group (1989 – 2003), differences in mortality, suicide attempts and crime disappear. This means that for the 1989 to 2003 group, we did not find a male pattern of criminality.

As to the criminality metric itself, we were measuring and comparing the total number of convictions, not conviction type. We were not saying that cisgender males are convicted of crimes associated with marginalization and poverty. We didn’t control for that and we were certainly not saying that we found that trans women were a rape risk. What we were saying was that for the 1973 to 1988 cohort group and the cisgender male group, both experienced similar rates of convictions. As I said, this pattern is not observed in the 1989 to 2003 cohort group.

This is factually incorrect if one examines the study (which is not behind a paywall).

  • in Table 2, the last two rows related to crime, and then violent crime. The crude (i.e. unadjusted) hazard ratios show that the "sex"-reassigned people were twice as likely to commit any crime, and almost three times as likely to commit violent crime, compared to controls.
  • the adjusted hazard ratios remove the effects of psychiatric morbidity and immigrant status. It is not clear why one would adjust for psychiatric morbidity, or indeed the definition of psychiatric morbidity given that the cases are people who underwent "sex" reassignment. It's a hand-waving away of inconvenient results.
  • if you look at just the row for violent crime, you will see that the entries for both cohorts (1973-1988, and 1989-2003) have "NA" entered in where there should be hazard ratio values. The footnote to the table says this was due to sparse data, which means in practice that no statistical test can be trusted to produce accurate results. It is therefore factually inaccurate to state, as the lead author did that If one divides the cohort into two groups, 1973 to 1988 and 1989 to 2003, one observes that for the latter group (1989 – 2003), differences in mortality, suicide attempts and crime disappear.
  • finally, why was the data split into two cohorts? No reason is given for the use of two cohorts. This makes me immediately suspicious that the author/s went on a fishing expedition to find results that were publishable. If data are split like this, always ALWAYS question why.

Thank you for this, IWearPurple. Very interesting.

IWearPurple · 24/02/2018 12:55

If she is only referring to the last cell, on the second-to-last row, I wouldn't be emphasising one result out of eight as though that was the important one. It's incredibly misleading.

Ereshkigal · 24/02/2018 13:00

I agree. I think it's very disingenuous.

Predators in woman's safe spaces

Ouchbirthhurted · 25/02/2018 08:52

Any policy related to where trans prisoners will be housed, and especially in relation to women's safety, would need to take into account the nature and extent a few different factors in the planning of safe prison facilities:

  1. crimes that trans people of each biological sex tend to commit, link to some info here (not sure how comprehensive or how trans crime figures are currently separated out) transcrimeuk.com
  1. Current and historical crime figures broken down by biological sex
  1. Estimates of and safeguarding considerations around any increase in numbers from prisoners who mighy not have previously considered themselves trans but could say that they did in order to benefit. E.g. Sex offenders

Found this. A useful list of harrassment and violence directed at women over this issue. There is a short intro, and a link to the 'Masterpost', which is the continually updated evidence base.
