Sorry for all the crappy links but I was looking up articles about tattoo fixers on another thread and got lost...

18 year old daughter of two gay men wants to get a surrogate just like her dads did. She wants the surrogate mother to carry a high risk twin pregnancy for her as she can't face doing it herself....

If all this trans stuff continues to prevail plus an increase in gay men getting married and having more 'heteronormative' lives I think surrogacy is going to be a hot topic in a decade or so. Even more so if women start to see it as a viable option beyond infertility or medical reasons.

There was an AIBU thread about Tom Daley and his husband announcing the imminent birth of their child that got quite heated. It's quite hard to have proper debate about with being accused of trans or homophobia.

It's another area in which feelings outweigh autonomy and bodily safety of women.

I think there have in the past been instances where women have made an altruistic choice to be a surrogate whether for strangers or a friend/family member. I think if my sister or closet female friend had been in this situation it's something I would have considered doing for them out of love.

It worries me that it's becoming a big supply and demand business which will push women into doing it for all the same reasons women go into porn and prostitution.

It all feels like another step closer to A Handmaids Tale.

Closest not closet Blush

Also I should say I'm uncomfortable with heterosexual couples who are infertile using surrogacy even though I do sympathise with infertility because it's the start of the argument that sees gay men, trans people and even single men without partners also fall under the umbrella of infertility.

Her parents exploit others for a fast buck.

I once watched them on a TV show, they bought the kids school via donations, installed their choice of Head via influence!

Surrogacy makes me uncomfortable because I have a big problem with the concept of buying babies, and also because of the inequality of power /resources that often exists between prospective parents and the surrogate.

I didn’t read the Tom Daley thread but read some comments from his husband to the effect that he was shocked that UK laws don’t allow commercial surrogacy. He sounded bloody entitled to me. No human should be bought/sold. And the girl in the article sounds equally as self-centred, but she at least has the excuse of being only 18, and 18 year olds are prone to thinking what they want is more important than anything else.

BarrackerBarmer · 17/02/2018 12:35

Well that's disturbing.
It reads as if the dads, who already have 5 children through surrogacy, want some more, and have decided their daughter can donate the embryos for them (but not endure the risk of a pregnancy, gosh no, some other subhuman can do that) and she'll get to keep a couple of babies as commission.

Yes. And the complicity of better-off women in the use of poorer women's bodies obscures the inherent misogyny in the concept of surrogacy.

Misogyny; misogyny; internalised misogyny.
