Gender Survey

I've just filled this in. If enough people say they are "Agender Female" perhaps someone somewhere might wake up to the fact that gender is a load of old bollocks.

Brilliant! I shared that on Twitter last night - given that it's for anyone who doesn't feel that they fit into one of two gendered boxes, all the MN feminists who don't have an internal sense of gender identity can legitimately fill it in.

Using 'male' and 'female' to describe gender, as the survey does, is even worse than using man and woman, I have to say. Words mean things!

yetanotherusernameAgain · 15/02/2018 13:16

What does 'agender female' mean? Surely it's contradictory?

I've done the survey. Added my own word in the 'noun' section as none of those offered covered me.

The survey invites responses from anyone:

"not fully included in the binary of “anyone whose gender is always entirely and solely male, and anyone whose gender is always entirely and solely female.”

Please play nicely and only participate if you don't feel "entirely and solely" one gender or the other. Which may be quite a few of us!

Agender female I'd take to mean that you have no gender identity and your sex is female - because the word female relates to biological sex.

As for how others might interpret it - who knows?

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 15/02/2018 14:45

Yes that's exactly how I meant it. Presenting as female but having no internal "feeling" of being one gender or the other.

In other words - a woman.

I love this gem from the end of the survey:

Thanks for the clarification. I think I would prefer "agender woman" rather than "agender female". "Female" is problematic because it can be used for both gender and biological description and we're trying to separate the two.

I did have a quick look for the definition of "agender" and one of the explanations was someone who feels neither a man nor a woman, so that wasn't helpful either!

I was a bit surprised that of all the titles - and there were a lot - there was no 'Mrs'. Still fairly standard on a form I'd have thought? Anyway, I answered truthfully but changed gender to personality for the comments bit. I don't expect everyone I encounter to suspend their own reality for the days I'm not feeling particularly womanly.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 15/02/2018 16:50

I checked "other" and added "Mrs" in the comments bit. And had my usual rant about how it's actually short for Mistress and should be an option for all women regardless of marital status. (Off-topic? Me? Never.)

Wish I'd thought of putting "personality" instead of gender in the comments. Might have to do another one but give it more thought this time...

Filled it out. Don't think my response to the Feedback section at the end is what they're expecting, but I think I (gently) made my point. Wink

For fucks sake..'faeself' is an actual pronoun...and what on earth is 'spivak' Confused

AstraiaLiberty · 15/02/2018 18:12

Spivak pronouns: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spivak_pronoun

Apparently there was no 'Mrs' included because the survey maker only includes responses that got at least 1% of votes in last year's survey, and Mrs didn't. Hmm

Female: of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilized by male gametes. Anyone using it to mean 'feminine-gendered' is just being misleading, in my opinion. But then I also think gender is bullshit and everyone is non-binary.

'Faeself' there really is no excuse for. I thought it was one of those weird internet things like identifying as a wolf or lion or whatever.
