Victoria Coren on Only Connect

Does anyone else watch Only Connect? Victoria had an absolutely brilliant moment this week with a misogynistic old dinosaur of a contestant! Grin

They were going through the groups at the end of their wall round. One group contained: “Brassy”, “Fresh”, “Forward” and “Smart”. The misogynist was CONVINCED the connection was to do with “a certain type of woman” and kept digging himself into a hole while VCM gave him withering looks and then made him look like an idiot.

Check it out on the iPlayer, sorry I’m too rubbish to link to a clip of it or anything.

I love that she always makes these middle class pompous men look like arses and makes them squirm when they try to get away with crappy guesses Grin

Ive been watching old episodes on YouTube too - Jenny Ryan, the Chaser is on one episode. She is amazing.

Victoria's brill - gonna go watch it now; could use a laugh! Grin

Mishappening · 06/02/2018 16:16

She made her point, but in a gentle and kindly way - something we could all learn from.

Men get it wrong sometimes, but do not deserve to be pilloried for a mistake. Well done Victoria! Spot on!

Don't know if this link will work:

The eyebrow was great! They backtracked almost immediately.

In fairness to them I was struggling to come up with a definition that didn't sound horrible too. Mainly because I've never heard a man described as brassy.

But I love Only Connect and I love Victoria C M

I've only ever got one 5 pointer on the connections round though and to my shame it was a question about premium supermarket brands.

I did get the Tuberculosis - Great Britain one though last night at Great Britain.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 06/02/2018 16:21

What was the link though?!?!

TossDaily · 06/02/2018 16:23

To be fair, I had more of an issue with the question-setter.

I've never heard of a man described as 'pert' or 'brassy'.

Maybe the link should have been 'sexist terminology'.

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 06/02/2018 16:23

I got that supermarket brand one for a 5-pointer too pasta Blush

The link was words describing a person who was cheeky which DH and I both agreed was rubbish - I would never exchange any of those words for cheeky!

Ohyesiam · 06/02/2018 16:28

VCM is my new hero since reading her poker mémoire last week, Confessions of a Player I think.
She is clever, sexy, beautiful, kind, and funny.
I hope you read mums net , Victoria!

numbereightyone · 06/02/2018 16:30

She was very firm with him. He had pissed her off earlier about taking too much time answering a question so her patience was very thin. Good for her pulling him up on it.

ShatnersBassoon · 06/02/2018 16:41

Brassy is a word used only to describe women, and it doesn't mean cheeky. I don't think the contestant (who seemed neither middle class nor pompous, to be fair to him) was a misogynist, but the question-setter was a bit misguided.

I don't think anyone would have the same reaction if a word like spiv formed part of an answer. It's not especially clever to pick up on everything that isn't entirely neutral towards all women and all men.

AssassinatedBeauty · 06/02/2018 16:44

Is it not like the "bold as brass/brass necked" phrase, a derivation of that?

ShatnersBassoon · 06/02/2018 16:45

Brassy: (typically of a woman) tastelessly showy or loud in appearance or manner.
"her brassy, audacious exterior"

AssassinatedBeauty · 06/02/2018 16:47

Several online thesauruses do list it as a synonym for cheeky. I accept that most people will take it to mean the usage that you quote though.
