Just following on from the thread by the silly sexist man, it occurs to me that many men don't see that gender is imposed on us externally at all and actually think we are free to choose. This is presumably because they haven't experienced it as oppression. I'm not sure it helps our argument much to focus on how they're ignoring sex or conflating gender with sex. I'm not sure they are. They actually think we have chosen the gender we (mostly) have imposed on us. I think gender is real but I definitely don't think it's origins are in our brains when we're born. It is both imposed and performed but we mainly perform our gender (those of us who do) because we pick up on social cues. It feels like choice but it isn't. As evidenced by the fact that autistic children, who don't pick up on social cues, often don't perform gender.
