The opposite of peak trans?

Imherefornow · 04/02/2018 19:51

Today on twitter I have noticed a sudden influx of gender critical women speaking out. A few seem to have peak transed over the Rose incident!

Fabulous news and welcome 😁

Reading r/gendercritical peak trans threads gives me a warm glow when I am in danger of feeling despondent with the whole situation.

But I was wondering, has anyone see it go the other way? I can't think of a single example but then I suppose I wouldn't from my twitter bubble. Is it even possible!?

Good point, ova - there are likely a lot of people who have dipped a toe in, or said something "wrong" on social media, had the wrath of the glittery, blue haired army descend upon them, and retreated back, never to venture an opinion again. But that's not the same as actually changing your views.

OvaHere · 04/02/2018 21:20

Quite Hairy

AnyFucker · 04/02/2018 21:23

The thing is, I am non violent and wish no physical harm to anybody

I also work with children/teens and totally sympathise with those on the fringes of mainstream society

I hate to think of anyone suffering

And still...I was peak trans a long time ago because a minority don't give a tiny shit about my sympathies. They want to throw all the moderates under a bus to further their own extreme ideology. It's not ok. It hardened me. It moved me from middle to hardline. And now there is no going back.

TheCatsPaws · 04/02/2018 21:27

I can’t imagine it. The Rose McGowan thing and Gary Dean did it for me, and now it just seems awful.

BarrackerBarmer · 04/02/2018 21:27

PeakTrans is like a ratchet screwdriver. It only goes in one direction.

This is reason to take hope. People who truly listen to both sides just can't sustain the pretence, and that's that, no going back.

There will always be people bereft of a moral compass who will be led wherever the magnetism of their peer group lead them. But it isn't necessary to persuade everyone. Some people aren't actually interested in what is right or fair, only what is popular. That gang will follow the thinkers once they reach critical mass.

Critical mass will come. It's building already, and there's no ratcheting it back again.

PencilsInSpace · 04/02/2018 21:28

Oh yeah I totally forgot about the lefty dudebros who waver one way then the other. I doubt their private thoughts on this are all that interesting - 'Haven't thought about it much because it doesn't affect me. Don't give a shit really if I'm honest as long as I don't have to sleep with one but gimme the cookies.'

Irrelevant wankers.

HairyBallTheorem · 04/02/2018 21:29

I remember getting incensed the first time I heard a TRA trying to defend the "cotton ceiling", saying it wasn't really rapey as shit, it was a political statement.

I've since come to realise it was one of those stopped-clock-right-twice-a-day moments. It is both rapey as shit and a political statement. And as a political statement it's the acid test for whether a TRA "fellow traveler" actually believes this shit.

It's also incredibly revealing. Remember the horribly racist "denying trans space women are women is like denying black women are women" crap that the TRAs have been coming out with recently (as if black women are some sort of sub-species of women rather than women - like I say, jaw droppingly racist). Well it raises its horrible racist head when you challenge a lefty dude bro - they usually say "well, transwomen are women, just not my type, just like

PencilsInSpace · 04/02/2018 21:31

PeakTrans is like a ratchet screwdriver.

Brilliant! Star

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 04/02/2018 21:32

Another one here who doesn't think reversing peak trans is possible.

I came on MN many moons ago..... I was a "cool girl".
I didn't get it.

But I have read, and read....not just here, but all sorts of places.

Once you see the light, it is literally impossible to get back in the hole.

I am now a proud rad fem, and heavily gender critical.
I always was, but I swallowed the Kool Aid re anti feminists and shut down my internal cynicism in the name of "inclusivity" and silenced my doubts.

It's literally about facts.

Claiming men with penises are women cos they say so is on the same level as saying that the earth is flat and carried by a tortoise because you said so.

TheCatsPaws · 04/02/2018 21:33

I recently had a trans woman be incredibly misogynistic to me on social media and kept telling me I was ugly and needed surgery. When I pointed out the irony in her comments, I was attacked by a mob of trans activists calling me transphobic.

From what I can see, they are plain old misogynists trying to take over women’s spaces and talk down to women.

differenteverytime · 04/02/2018 21:38

The thing that has wavered me in the past is the fact that some very good friends of mine, and other friends of my dd, are trans (all except one biologically female). Without exception they are kind, thoughtful, well-meaning but troubled people who just want to get on with their lives in the way that they feel best able to live with themselves. I can wish them nothing but the best and want nothing more than to stand supportively beside them.

What I felt, before I properly thought about it, was that having gender-critical views whilst knowing and loving these people was equivalent to saying: "Some of my best friends are gay, but..." before saying something homophobic. But it isn't the same at all. Gay people aren't trying to change anyone else's reality. You can support someone without having to agree with everything they say; without having to pretend you believe things that you don't believe; and without being forced to deny your own material reality.

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 04/02/2018 21:41

And the whole Lefty DudeBro thing has got me thinking.

Having been in a relationship with an incredibly misogynistic abusive cunt, who, to the outside world, was this caring, liberal, animal loving, environmental, anti racist activist, but was actually a violent, abusive, controlling arsehole......ditto a few friends....

I have come to the conclusion that a hell of a lot of the oh so fucking liberal dudes have been waiting for the oppurtunity to do this.

They get to have the "high ground" and unleash their inner misogynist.

Ereshkigal · 04/02/2018 21:44

Precisely Laura.

Ereshkigal · 04/02/2018 21:44

Lana!

AnyFucker · 04/02/2018 21:46

Yeah, I was swayed for a while by having a trans colleague for the last 20 years

But she never pushed an agenda, never asked for special treatment, was never phased by accidental pronoun failure, just got on with her job with no drama

Just like a normal, functioning member of society. Fancy that.

OvaHere · 04/02/2018 21:50

PeakTrans is like a ratchet screwdriver. It only goes in one direction.

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 04/02/2018 21:56

Yeah....maybe I'm just cynical but it seems to me that the fucking BroSocialists have leapt on this chance to put us mouthy feminists back in our place without losing their trendy, lefty credentials.

A random story, but I feel it sheds light on this attitude...

An old friend of mine, who I've known since secondary school, and hung out with regularly for over 20 years is a hard core anarcho punk type.

He wears his lefty credentials with pride.

One night recently, when we were quite pissed, he let slip that he thinks "hardcore" punk women (basically the female version of him....mohican/tats/attitude) are really unattractive and that he only fancied "feminine, trendy" women.

I challenged him on this....
His defence??

"Men don't like women with attitude, it's not sexy"

Shock Angry

Needless to say...I'm not speaking to him atm.

OvaHere · 04/02/2018 22:00

Lana Shock

I wish MN had a face palm emoji

QueenShitSandwich · 04/02/2018 22:03

Trough Trans surely?

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 04/02/2018 22:04

Oh Ova it was fucking hilarious and incredibly depressing at the same time.

He also had the fucking audacity to complain that only punk girls fancied him, and he couldn't understand why "trendy" women turned him down.
ConfusedHmm

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 04/02/2018 22:07

Basically his logic is.....

I am a man.
I can look like whatever I want.
Women must conform to a stereotype.
Shouty men = good
Shouty women = bad

OvaHere · 04/02/2018 22:08

Doesn't ever change does it? Angry

HumphreyCobblers · 04/02/2018 22:11

Yeah....maybe I'm just cynical but it seems to me that the fucking BroSocialists have leapt on this chance to put us mouthy feminists back in our place without losing their trendy, lefty credentials.

I think this is absolutely true.

OnTheList · 05/02/2018 00:08

It really is a one way street. I have never ever seen someone come back fom a gender critical stance.
