10,000 women a fucking year! Sad

The rise of the Russian Orthodox Church has a lot to do with it, and the law that has just come in that decriminalises certain types of domestic abuse.

Its part of a world wide war on women. It seems to be driven by the Right, fascists and Nationalists.

icedtea · 02/02/2018 14:53

I just watched this on the link. The Russian alcohol and drug addiction problem seems to be a major factor in the violence.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 02/02/2018 15:09

It broke my heart listening to what those poor women and their children had been through.

The rise of the church seems to have as much to do with it as the alcohol does. And yes, there really does seem to be a war against women being waged, and it's beyond terrifying.

Marking this to remind myself to watch later when I get a mo. (I remember reading about the repeal of anti-DV legislation in Russia and being horrified; I've also read the 10,000 women stat and am beyond horrified by that.)

Agerbilatemycardigan · 02/02/2018 17:12

I felt totally enraged by the men blaming women for the violence against them. Apparently it's their own fault for wanting equality.

I found it really triggering to watch, because I was in a violent marriage 30 years ago, and remember the fear and helplessness.

I haven't watched yet, but I think this is behind a lot of this - porn influenced expectations of appearance and sexual acts/performance; unrealistic/unachieveable beauty ideals that the majority of adult women are unable to achieve; men being allowed to call themselves women and actual female biology being rejected as transexclusionary.

I just don't understand how one half of the human race can be so widely reviled by the other.

icedtea · 02/02/2018 18:33

A 2014 study found that a staggering 25% of Russian men die before age 55, primarily due to alcohol. I never realised alcoholism was such a huge problem in Russia.

glenthebattleostrich · 02/02/2018 18:44

Upstart, the left hate women just as much as the right. It's across the political spectrum and unites them all.

HairyBallTheorem · 02/02/2018 18:57

I'm about a third of the way through. Just got to the bit about alcoholism. apparently a third of deaths in Russia are thought to be alcohol related.

The whole thing is just horrifying. How anyone could have supported decriminalising DV is beyond me. Yet I remember back when the law was changed hearing a female member of the Duma being interviewed and defending the decriminalisation! Shock

DS is watching with me and swearing copiously in fury (which I'm telling off in a slightly desultory way because fury is the appropriate response).

One niggle though - much as I'm in favour of bringing this sort of current affairs programme to a young audience, it does seem a shame to bury it on III - why not put it on BBC 1?

Agerbilatemycardigan · 02/02/2018 19:55

It should definitely be available to a wider audience HairyBallTheorem

Putin and Trump are opposite sides of the same coin in their feelings towards women. Both countries are dragging women's rights backwards at a rate of knots.

Trump's views were well known in the election run up -- despite this women themselves voted him into power, and rejected Hillary Clinton.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 02/02/2018 21:23

I know icedtea It's such a mind fuck. Why would anybody vote for their own subjugation?

I didn't say left wing men were immune from misogyny, they aren't. But this is being driven by nationalism. Russia is not a Socialist country now, if it ever was its not considered a democracy; Putin is ex KGB.
Russia has a problem with alcohol but thats just another symptom. Alcohol doesn't make people violent.

The question is, why so so many men now want to be master? If you were given the opportunity to be a master, would you take it?

Agerbilatemycardigan · 02/02/2018 22:26

I'm not entirely sure I'd want the responsibility of being in charge of anyone.

They looked to me like a load of impotent men whose only power is the power they can wield over their women. It's sad and horrific.
