Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Taking a moment...

I know there is so, so, so much more to do. But I stepped back for a second today and thought how much feminism has achieved in the last year.

I really feel like (gender self ID aside) we're starting to make some head way this last year.

Things like:

  • The focus on equal pay with companies publishing stats this year and the BBC furore
  • Stopping grid girls and darts girls
  • The #metoo campaign and visibility of sexual harassment and assault issues
  • That the FT did an expose with undercover reporters at The President's Club rather than it just being accepted behaviour
  • The Women's marches

I just feel like we're reaching a great tipping point - lots of new feminist publications, etc.

Just thought today how much further I feel like we've come than the previous 10-15 years. Not a time to rest on any laurels since there's so much more that needs to change but felt like sharing my positive and optimistic mindset today!

Yes.

We can't lose sight of the gains.

Working on the definition of women, is vital. But in the meantime, real life happens, dogs get walked, people go to work, kids are fed.

And gains are important.

Pats on backs are affirming and positive.

The arguments are being had publicly and loudly at the moment, albeit not as successfully as we'd like.

KBO.

I think the trans issue and self id has brought feminism to life for some women (myself included).
I think you get so used to sexism in everyday life, you don't see it anymore.
The above issues make you look again at everything and see the inherent unfairness. And want it changed.

I couldn't agree more. Every time someone pauses to think about the trans issue, another feminist is born.

Grin It is like getting whacked in the face Datun

And you've gained me over the last year.
Very quietly following but learning, taking it all in, and more importantly giving it to my daughters.
Too scared to put my head above the parapet for almost everything but you are making a real difference. So am I in my tiny way at home.

Datun · 31/01/2018 22:36

You're not the only one Wilhamenawonka.

It's becoming a daily occurance. #nodebate was such an own goal.

People get a little suspicious wondering why they can't talk about something.

Wilhamenawonka · 02/02/2018 20:43

Had my first ever conversation about issues in feminism today and the trans discussion came up.
I know there's a good thread somewhere that details the issues. Please can someone provide a link to it as not sure which one it is.
