The latest madness from the TRA's - Glasgow school stops using "boys" and "girls": www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/01/29/school-stops-using-terms-boys-and-girls-in-pe-so-that-everyone-is-included/

This article is confusing.

Social dancing is based on ‘gendered roles’ - men lead, women follow. So the pupils are being called leaders and followers. Is this not actually enforcing sex-based stereotypes?!? Males are leaders, females are followers totally buys into the idea that men should take lead roles.

Or am I misunderstanding?

And how does this address (unspecified) changing room issues?

I suppose it means that any gender can lead a dance and any gender can follow.

Tbh I don’t think it’s a big deal.

If it means that anyone is free to lead or follow dependent on only their dancing preference and not their sex or what they perceive as their “gender identity” then I think that’s great. Shame things have to be labelled transphobic to be changed though, seems just being sexist doesn’t cut it.

Indeed Pineapple

I think this is really good actually. Having boys as ‘leaders’ in dancing, and girls as ‘followers’ is very sexist. Now either can take either part. It’s the right thing for the wrong reasons but I’ll take it.

They also have gender neutral toilets in addition to male and female- also good.

I am presuming and hoping that the gender neutral changing rooms mentioned are also in addition to male and female- if so that’s great.

In a class with unequal numbers of 'boys' and 'girls' (however you define such terms) there will be some gender swapping, more a position in dances. DD goes to highland dancing, the reel was originally gendered roles, but as 95% are now girls this became meaningless.

Changing is a bit more complex. Usually trans pupils are given separate spaces, thats how DDs school handle it.

Not worth a song and dance about. Wink
