Morning all Smile I've finally got my arse in gear and joined Twitter. Ive followed some of the obvious people (drradfem, a womans place etc) just wondering if anyone can recommend anyone else? I don't really understand Twitter! Do I need to follow the TRAs to see what they're saying or will things like that just appear in my feed?

Sorry for all the questions Smile

Apparently LB said that if someone attacked her like they did MM, she'd knock then out (paraphrased).

My vote is for wilful misinterpretation

goodyzoe · 31/01/2018 12:37

There's a clip of Linda Bellos on a panel saying she did boxing and would "fuck em" if they come near her.

It's my strong suspicion if you look at the longer video it will become apparent that there is context to this that is being ignored. I think the talk was not long after speakers corner / the anarchist book fair so quite possibly in reference to that. But - I haven't seen the longer video yet so I'm guessing.

Did she name names?

Because isnt that like a dad saying if anyone hurts my daughter I'll knock his block off?

If you're not about to hurt his daughter, then it doesn't apply to you.

Ereshkigal · 31/01/2018 13:55

It was in reference to Speakers Corner etc. Maria McLachlan was also on the panel. It was at the We Need to Talk event in York in November. Which TRAs also managed to get cancelled at the original venue at the last minute and so participants and speakers had to go to a meeting point and await details of new venue. So it was quite tense!

Datun · 31/01/2018 13:58

Right so she was talking about men who had already attacked a woman, with a premeditated plan.

Lily reckons Linda Bellos 'threatened violence against 'transwomen'.

Self defence being interpreted as a threat. Same old bloody bollocks.

Battleax · 31/01/2018 14:12

They're claiming "born female" is transphobic now. They twist everything. They just want ALL the words.

I'm bored of saying it's Orwellian but it is just so very Orwellian. Not in the context he imagined it at all, but he was spot on about the mechanism.

Ereshkigal · 31/01/2018 14:28

I know Battle, that Vonny Bravo tweetstorm a pp posted last night is gobsmacking in its callousness, narcissism and general batshittery. It shouldn't have shocked me, but it did.

Ereshkigal · 31/01/2018 14:30

Right so she was talking about men who had already attacked a woman, with a premeditated plan.

I've listened to what she said several times, it was about self defence and relevant in the context but unfortunately the way Linda worded it left her wide open to their interpretation.

BeyondWitchbitchterf · 31/01/2018 16:18

Battleax, I've seen them calling terfs Orwellian too, we can't even have that! Confused

Battleax · 31/01/2018 16:28

Complete fucking madness Angry

stoneagefertilitydoll · 31/01/2018 16:33

yeah - abuse in TRA world wouldn't even register for most of us - on another thread someone mentioned some site 'shit terfs say'

and yeah, there were a few that I think were over the line, and they had a new acronym (SCAM or something) - so I'm guessing it's been lifted from some private group - because I've not heard that one. - but the vast majority were just women stating biological facts that you could find in any school textbook.

goodyzoe · 31/01/2018 20:52

Linda Bellos has tweeted:

Seen an edited version of my words on YouTube. I was referring to fighting back if I was attacked as Maria Mack was in Hyde Park in October. The impression created is that I intend to attack trans women. I was the only black person present and targeted. Is this racism?

Datun · 31/01/2018 20:56

They honestly cannot keep up this DARVO bollocks forever.

People simply aren't that gullible.

RedToothBrush · 31/01/2018 21:55

People simply aren't that gullible.

Are you sure about that?

Exhibit A: a bus with nhs and £350 million written on the side

Exhibit B: an America First Cap with a made in China label

Datun · 31/01/2018 22:33

Are you sure about that?

I have to be !

BlindYeo · 01/02/2018 00:57

Oh take the Brexit bashing bullshit off to the EU Referendum board Red.

slightlybefuddledlibrarian · 01/02/2018 03:09

Oo I only joined at the weekend and I found most of those users all on my lonesome! #proud
Thanks for the useful hints everyone!

RedToothBrush · 01/02/2018 11:10

Oh take the Brexit bashing bullshit off to the EU Referendum board Red.

My point is, that regardless of anything else, people will always believe what they WANT to believe. Other things are irrelevant.

BlindYeo · 01/02/2018 11:48

I hope you apply that argument to yourself too not just everyone you disagree with.

Battleax · 01/02/2018 11:52

You didn't really make that point though Red.

The good thing about Twitter is you do get to see exactly what people believe.

Not what some snide arse says they believe.

I'm really bored of the snobbery inherent in the post-Brexit bitching. Unless thousands of people have confirmed that they believed the aod of a bus, stop saying it.

Battleax · 01/02/2018 11:55

Side^

LangCleg · 01/02/2018 12:03

I think there is some form of analogy worth making with Brexit, though.

Many people's lives are worse than they were (deindustrialisation, etc). It's objectively true. And some of those people felt the EU is at the heart of why that is. But instead of proposing ways to make their lives better within the EU, the liberal establishment smeared them as ignorant racists and dismissed their actual, real lives.

The liberal establishment is doing exactly the same thing to feminists now. Self-ID will, objectively, make life more dangerous for women. It's true. But instead of finding ways forward that take this into account and protect women, the liberal establishment is sneering at feminists, smearing them as ignorant bigots and dismissing their actual, real lives.

That's the problem with the bourgeois left - it self-identifies as inherently good and as everyone else's representation. Step out of line and it doesn't engage - it denounces. And I say this as an old school leftist. Just a working class one.

(Full disclosure: I'm eurosceptic but voted remain on a frying pan and fire basis. I don't much like the EU as a pro-austerity, market-making entity but the world is as it is and we'd likely be worse off out than in, for all its faults.)

RedToothBrush · 01/02/2018 12:03

Actually, there was evidence that a hell of a lot of people did believe the bus. Not everyone did, which includes many Leavers, who voted for other reasons and did see through the bus as being a load of shit. But it did influence a lot of people, because that's what they wanted to hear.

Would you like me to source this for you?

People are selective in what they see and what they hear. They tend to ignore what they don't like.

Battleax · 01/02/2018 12:06

(Full disclosure: I'm eurosceptic but voted remain on a frying pan and fire basis. I don't much like the EU as a pro-austerity, market-making entity but the world is as it is and we'd likely be worse off out than in, for all its faults.)

Yes I'm broadly in the same position.

But if I hear "thick WC people votes stupidly/voted according to side of a bus/don't deserve a vote" one more time I will do something immoderate. It's an awful trope and it's jarring for it suddenly to insert itself here of all places.

Battleax · 01/02/2018 12:07

I'd rather stay on topic Red TBH.

I don't believe that anyone voted on the basis of a bus ad alone so it's moot anyway.
