Were you a Labour Party member who has left due to GRA issues and self ID

Just that question really. I was and I finally left following the appointment of Lily Madigan as Women's Officer. I'd really like to know the number of other people who have done the same.

Have you left, or are considering leaving due to similar concerns?

There are motions being voted on all over the place. I'm wondering if there was a way to get these declared invalid on the basis that there would have been a strong element of coercion in the voting process.

They were voted on via open ballot. Given the hostile treatment, threats of job loss etc meted out to people who speak against the inclusion of self-IDing women on AWS, could we argue that these votes are undemocratic and made under duress? I'm not familiar enough with the Labour internal voting process to know if this is doable. Pilgrim Tucker on facebook has said she's had some private messages of support from people who voted in favour of motions because they were frightened of the consequences of voting against.

My name's on the crowdfunder. i was never an active member so it's no skin off my nose if they chuck me out. saves me the trouble of cancelling my direct debit Grin

Labour came knocking on my door on Friday might to canvass my young adult son and daughter (who were not at home) about some local arrangements. We had a bit of a chat, they asked me why I didn't join the party and get involved. I explained my uneasiness about the GRA and Labour's stance on women shortlists and the whole Lily Madigan debacle.

They didn't seem to know much about it, were genuinely appalled and promised to look into the issue. Basically, I think the decent rank and file of labour are unaware of this issue.

Tbh I very much doubt that they don't know. I had the same lines from them about anti-Semitism. They did fully know.

Everyone (including us!) in civilised company says and believes they are "pro trans" but when you explain the actual reality of what is being proposed by the TRA, they jump back like scalded cats, exclaiming "no, no I didn't mean THAT extent!".

That's a big part of the problem. People don't know what is happening/being proposed.

Considering leaving but not sure what to do really. Feeling politically homeless :(

This.

I've cancelled my direct debit and torn up my card. I haven't yet emailed them but when I do I shall certainly be very clear about the reason. I've been banging on about it on Twitter too. It's a massive backwards step for women's rights. I agree it leaves us "homeless" - it's time for a new left wing party

OnLiamsList · 29/01/2018 13:16

Barrack there must be LOADS of women on MN who can make a website.

Make a new thread asking specifically?
I agree we need one big site like a Wordpress or something where we can collect and post stuff and debate etc.

And link to this!

List of members of Lily Madigan's Labour Party group that collated the Hit List.

Another considering leaving

Useless leadership, useless on Brexit and now self identification

But I want to stay for when I have a chance to vote for a different leader but this will not be for some years

Now I’ve just typed that out I have my answer Oh fuck it I’m leaving

BrownLiverSpot · 29/01/2018 13:27

I may be the only one, but I find the idea of affiliating yourself with a party very strange. You need to look at all the party manifestos at the time of the election and choose which one you will be happiest to stand behind (you can never of course be fully behind any of them). Not to vote for a party just because you have always voted for them (or even worse because your parents have always voted for them). Many of you are feeling politically homeless now but there is still some time before the next GE.

MrPan · 29/01/2018 13:33

Considering this over the past few weeks.

From the brief discussions I've had with other members, the majority have no idea about self-id and the PArty's stated positions.

Am thinknig there are too many other issues in addition where support for the more just position would go down the plug hole along with women's identification.
