Getting the message across

I've been pondering why the 'transwomen are women' message has proved so persuasive for many people.

I think people tend to respond best to messages of hope and change. 'Votes for women'. 'Legalise gay marriage'. Slogans about positive improvement are more compelling than 'oppose change' or 'keep things how they are'.

Equally, people respond to snappy, emotive slogans a lot more than they respond to paragraphs of well-reasoned argument.

The arguments made by gender critical feminists may be sound, but understanding them can take time and thought. The message is also one of resisting change - albeit with good reason - rather than being 'progressive'.

So is there a way of explaining the gender critical argument that taps into people's desire for positive change?

I agree with everything you're saying but I think it's going to be hard to come up with a slogan because of it being such a complex issue

You want something like 'Keeping women safe' or 'Fighting female eradication' or 'safe spaces are sacred' Because this is an issue a basic issue of safety.

Protection for women?
Biology not bigotry?
A safer world for women?

I think it's a hard task!

Regressionconfession · 20/01/2018 13:50

I've been thinking a lot about this ... I don't know what the answer is though.

I like biology not bigotry.

Redonionricedpotato · 20/01/2018 13:52

Keep Women’s Spaces Safe.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 20/01/2018 13:53

'Sex can't be changed but it doesn't define us'? Or something?

Stopmakingsense · 20/01/2018 13:56

It's a graphic not a slogan, but I like this:

Yes. It is very hard to be pithy and truthful and persuasive at the same time.

It's much easier to tell lies! Especially when the very meaning of words are contested.

I think the best way is to find some haiku- like vignette that just captures it like "No boys in girls changing rooms!"

Or maybe something a bit of a headfuck that might pique interest by being a slogan:
"Women means women!"
Sort of reclaiming the language back and not giving any ground. It would the be up to the pomo loons to tie themselves in knots contesting it.

Women are adult human females

Woman
A Noun
Means adult human female

My biology trumps your gender identity

I think referencing Rachel Dolezal helps.

Battleax · 20/01/2018 14:58

Maybe also a bit of Bowdlerisation of Noemoller;

First, they're appropriating from women.
Next they'll appropriate from the disabled.
Then they'll appropriate from people of colour.
No self-cert ID.

Something like that? Needs some work and it's not lapel pin size.

GuardianLions · 20/01/2018 15:04

I'm liking a lot of these - some would sound great as chants, others would look great on banners, others great as placards or memes. ..

GuardianLions · 20/01/2018 15:28

I think your idea Battleax, accompanied with images, would be great as a short vid or gif.

Maybe using that transabled transwomen. .. I wonder if there are any transracial transwomen to get images of?....

MmmmmmBop · 20/01/2018 15:32

Don't forget appropriating childhood in the style of Steph-on-knee Hmm

Battleax · 20/01/2018 15:35

. I wonder if there are any transracial transwomen to get images of?....

The things I find myself googling these days Grin

GuardianLions · 20/01/2018 15:39

Right... steph on knee ..

Ereshkigal · 20/01/2018 15:41

There's a man claiming to be a Filipino woman.

GuardianLions · 20/01/2018 15:41

Lol battleax

Ereshkigal · 20/01/2018 15:41

A white man.

GuardianLions · 20/01/2018 15:43

Oh yes... does he just say he is a Filipino woman or does he dress in a particular way?

Battleax · 20/01/2018 15:44

Is that the one in California who exclusively eats Filipino cuisine?

Mumsnut · 20/01/2018 15:45

H'mm Erish. Perfect example.

Why is it appropriate for this male to appropriate a women's sex, but not her colour? Why is one valid, but not the other?

Ereshkigal · 20/01/2018 15:46

Not sure, not venturing far onto social media this weekend as I need a break for the sake of my blood pressure!

Battleax · 20/01/2018 15:47

I don't blame you.

GuardianLions · 20/01/2018 15:47

You are right and sensible!
