Because we need something that will lift us up, rather than send our blood pressure soaring.

Thread rules:

Women who've done bloody amazing things.

Soothing pics (fluffy animals, beautiful landscapes, flowers, wonderful craft creations, fabulous cakes... the list is open ended).

I can't do links on my phone but Tilly Shilling who fixed a flaw in spitfires and raced motorcycles.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 19/01/2018 10:48

Ada Lovelace, who essentially had the vision that means we are all here today, on MN, using computers!

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 19/01/2018 10:49

And Ada's mother, Anne, for insisting that Ada was taught maths and science.

While we're on the subject of great women who made it possible for us to waste time on the internet Grin, I give you... Hedy Lamarr, Hollywood star and co-inventor of spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology, which underpins the wifi we all use today.

Great thread!

My absolute hero.....
One of the great unsung women of all time imo.
Hannah Mitchell

Working class feminist, socialist and organiser of many many good things.
Please read her autobiography if you get the chance.

Another artist. This one's for my mum (who was an artist). Mary Cassatt was one of her favourite painters, and one who specialised in painting images of motherhood.

(As an aside, I remember my mother once painting a still life with some of my toys in it, and one of my dad's male colleagues trying to patronise her by saying something along the lines of "oh, how cute and feminine and slightly infantile." She gave him the most wonderful dressing down, saying that raising children had been a major part of her life experience and if she wanted to put that life experience into her art that was a perfectly valid source of artistic inspiration.)

Backingvocals · 19/01/2018 12:11

The Sylvia Plath poem brought a tear to my eye as did the Mary Cassatt picture. The domestic moments that she represents have been profound in my life. There's a quiet heroism in her care. How dare that be viewed as lesser?

I love what your mum said Hairy and if I could paint I'd go and paint a picture of things that have mattered to me and my children right now.

I have ordered the autobiography of Hannah Mitchell Smile

Lana I read The Hard Way Up when I was about 14 after watching 'Shoulder to Shoulder'. It was one of the very few books about suffragettes in our local library.

I must read it again because the only thing I can clearly remember is the account of her breakdown.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 19/01/2018 12:32

Yeah for Hairy's mum and her legacy on mumsnet :)

BertrandRussell · 19/01/2018 12:42

Germaine. Always Germaine.

Also my ds modeling being a gentle nurturing man I hope he will be. And my dog

I have a nurturing ds too bert. He loves playing with younger children and babies. He looks after all his friends and his family. He is 14 and it shows no sign of abating. He makes my heart melt.

Someone beat me to hedy Lamarr, so here’s Katharine Hepburn, my favourite ever movie star who demonstrates women can be strong (in all senses), and independent and can look awesome in a suit.

latara Flowers

I can’t think of any more inspirational women and I’m too lazy to google anything because I’m tired and worn out with cretins on Twitter. I’ve closed all my browser windows bar this one and I present another photo of lovely doggo who now lives on a farm in the sky, hopefully doing whatever it was that used to make him yip and run in his sleep.

Aw, she is lovely, Latara. Badger, my DS decided quite early on that he was an atheist, but believes in heaven so there's somewhere for our last cat and granny to live... so I'm sure doggo is up there with them.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 19/01/2018 22:29

Two more inspirational women, who have inspired me my whole life.
My Mum and Nan. Both single parents, one widowed, the other divorced. Strong, wonderful women.

And my oldie Goldie. I miss them all.
