*Over
the next few weeks, we are going to be carrying out some work with students in
an attempt to tackle attitudes towards gender equality. We have a number
of students, both male and female, from across a number of year groups, who
have expressed concern about some of the language used towards them or about
them, that is gender specific.

One
of the first strategies that we are planning is to deliver assemblies to each
Key Stage, exploring how the use of language can impact upon people,
particularly when discriminatory gendered wording is used.

As
you know, we are always keen to involve parents in our work with students. One
of the ideas we have in structuring these assemblies is to use actual
real-life quotations and examples and that is where we are seeking some
assistance from parents. What
we would like, if possible, is examples of actual words or phrases that have
been said to our parents, where gender has been a key defining aspect of the
content. Words or phrases may have been delivered in the workplace or in
social gatherings. They do not necessarily need to be negative but should
encourage students to consider how their use of sexist terminology leaves a
lasting impact. *

They want some examples, but I’m not quite sure what- sexism that I have experienced? Are they confusing sex and gender again? If they just want to address sexism then I’m all for it.

Send them that film where they asked people to 'run like a girl' (and they all flapped around giggling) and then they recorded girls running and they were so powerful and focused and then they showed the adults the girls running and they all realised they had totally sold those girls out. It's fucking heartbreaking.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 10/01/2018 19:21

I'd ignore the letter and tell my DC to take no notice of them papping on about this "gender equality" nonsense

Yeah. Fucking equality wankers. Wanting equality. Fuckers.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 10/01/2018 19:24

Send them Bella's post above? Get them to analyse why it's so stupid and offensive?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 10/01/2018 19:30

Here

Bossy
Hysterical
Difficult when describing a person. Only ever used for women.
The worst insult is a name for female genitalia. Other insults intend to shame women for sexual conduct whereas men are applauded and praised for the same.
Ask them what they want to be when they are adults. Fire fighter, police officer or fireman or policeman.
You could listen to the guilty feminist podcasts there are LOADS of examples.

SnugglySnerd · 10/01/2018 19:35

Definitely mention the sir/miss thing in schools. I'm a teacher and I hate it. It's bad enough being called "miss" by the kids but often a male teacher will address me as "miss" in front of a class. Teachers should either be addressed as Miss/Mrs/Ms/Mr/Dr Name according to their preference or it should be sir or ma'am like in the police.

Ratspit · 10/01/2018 19:37

Good grief, Certain I’m posting that on my FB.

thebewilderness · 10/01/2018 19:44

I think you should respond with gender role enforcement language. Unfortunately, I do not think that is what they intend to teach the children. Oft times they say gender equality training when they mean obedience training.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 10/01/2018 20:03

Oh good ratspit. I think it might be an Always advert but it deserves a good airing I think Grin

Ratspit · 10/01/2018 20:04

I’ll forgive them for making my pants smell like zoflora, just for that.

ObiJuanKenobi · 10/01/2018 20:33

UpABitLate · 10/01/2018 21:14

redexpat · 11/01/2018 09:43
