Lewis Hamilton

Brendan O'Neil on the mob fury at Lewis Hamilton.

Now I have no problem with a boy in a princess dress, but the poor sod Hamilton had to apologise for saying the boys shouldn't wear dresses, after he was hounded as a 'transphobe'.

And they say this this group of people are 'vulnerable'. They are like the frigging Stasi.

Hamilton was a knob for saying it.

But people should be allowed to say knobbish things if they wish.

Because then we know they are knobs.

Is ‘knob’ a deeply sexist pejorative?

hipsterfun · 27/12/2017 15:46

There’s fuck all point in issuing an apology. He’s clearly told us what he thinks. I disagree with him.

IrkThePurist · 27/12/2017 15:48

I'm surprised anyone has demanded he pay financial restitution. As if he has caused material harm by his statement.

LineyRunner · 27/12/2017 15:51

Did put a video up online of his nephew? That's quite important for me. Who gave him permission to do that, if so?

FattyCat · 27/12/2017 15:54

He filmed himself trying to spoil a little boy's Christmas present, that's why he is a nob.

Toys are toys and clothes are clothes. It doesn't mean the kid is trans.

Mermaids supporters predictably jumped all over it thought.

IndominusRex · 27/12/2017 16:00

I like Lewis Hamilton in F1. He was a dick for saying this. The people saying he was transphobic are also dicks. Boys can wear dresses. It's just clothes. End of.

NotSupposedtobeHere · 27/12/2017 16:04

Toys are toys and clothes are clothes. It doesn't mean the kid is trans

Exactly. Nor does it mean that Lewis Hamilton is transphobic for saying boys don’t wear dresses.

Trans*women say much the same thing.

Lewis Hamilton is caught up in a narrow damaging view of what it is to be a boy or a man. That’s not necessarily transphobia.

If you want a really same and logical take on this, from a male POV, Michael Conroy on Twitter is worth following.

He doesn’t get the abuse that women get, interestingly. And he acknowledges that. He’s a great ally.

Whereas I’ve had my livelihood threatened simply by retweeting gender-critical stuff.

NotSupposedtobeHere · 27/12/2017 16:06

Transwomen say much the same thing*.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. Transwomen also (like Lewis Hamilton) say that boys don’t wear dresses. Because they’re not boys if they wear dress. They’re “really” girls. So transwomen say ...

MrGHardy · 27/12/2017 16:29

Wait, wait, wait, they called him "transphobe"?

A boy can wear a dress. So in reality they are saying that boy is a girl. Wtf. Can people not see their massive gender stereotyping?

UpABitLate · 27/12/2017 16:39

He wasn't being transphobic he was being sexist. Enforcing gender norms is bog-standard behaviour, highly prevalent, and something feminists have been arguing against forever.

He was also being a bastard to that little kid and further decided to put it up for loads of other people, ie he didn't see anything wrong with picking on a little kid which is way more damning that anything else.

Plus he was the one with the areoplane and the taxes wasn't he? So an all round not-good-guy.

Elendon · 27/12/2017 16:43

Yeah, peace on earth and goodwill to all men.

His tweet was not transphobic. It was gender conforming and patriarchal. He is in a sport that is both.

Elendon · 27/12/2017 16:45

Plus he is a knob of the highest order anyway.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/12/2017 16:57

It was a sexist comment. If the Spiked article is accurate it might have been said in a joking sort of way. Not a brilliant joke but hardly deserving of the storm that followed. Hopefully someone in the Hamilton family ( the boy's mother / whoever bought the present?) explained this to him in a reasoned way.

The comment is not transphobic.

TheRollingCrone · 27/12/2017 16:59

It was a horrible thing to say - there is something "awkward " about 'Hamilton, like those people who tell hurtful "jokes".

This should probably go in 'sleb'. I know someone who worked a yacht in Monte Carlo. Let's just say this comment probably has more to do with LH than his nephew. lips are sealed high court injunctions !

HemlockSpartacus · 27/12/2017 17:17

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. Transwomen also (like Lewis Hamilton) say that boys don’t wear dresses. Because they’re not boys if they wear dress. They’re “really” girls.

This exactly

MrGHardy · 27/12/2017 18:28

His tweet was not transphobic. It was gender conforming and patriarchal. He is in a sport that is both.

So why were people calling him transphobic?

TunaSushi · 27/12/2017 18:32

There is no logic in why he is being called half the things he is. He shared his opinion (Not one I share) and humiliated a child (which is not on), yet TRAs make it all about them. Did he apologise for publicly humiliating the child?

guardianfree · 27/12/2017 18:35

MrGHardy
Because there IS no definition of transphobia. It's 'anything I take exception to!' That's why sane , inclusive, kind women are repeatedly called transphobic for standing up for the rights / safety of women and children.
It was a foolish comment (and I reckon bullying) to post it about such a young child).

IrkThePurist · 27/12/2017 18:40

John Barrowman was called transphobic for wearing a dress.

Potato25 · 28/12/2017 01:31

The Guardian's article on this story quoted Travis Alabanza (the gender fluid, non-binary man who demanded access to women's changing rooms in topshop and ruined it for us all).

'I hope @LewisHamilton properly thinks and apologises to his nephew for that video. Thinks about why it is so horrible, and considers donating to a charity which supports LGBT youth. That video is a video so many of us have experienced. Gross. It sticks with you'

www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/dec/26/lewis-hamilton-accused-of-humiliating-his-young-nephew-online?CMP=fb_gu

Totally inappropriate choice of person... A boy in a dress does not mean the boy is a girl ffs.

NotAgainYoda · 28/12/2017 08:25

Irk

That twitter post from Danielle would be funny if it weren't so beedin' stupid

NotAgainYoda · 28/12/2017 08:25

bleedin'

NotAgainYoda · 28/12/2017 08:26

And following on from that... Do transvestites/drag artists literally not exist now?

KathyBeale · 28/12/2017 08:37

This has made me so angry! I don’t have any respect for Lewis Hamilton anyway but the whole thing is just horrible. His rubbish ‘joke’, his obviously drafted by his PR apology, his retweeting of every message in support... the whole thing.

And then for the trans activists to jump on it and suggest he donates to Mermaids is just the worst. What Hamilton said (‘boys don’t wear dresses’) is exactly the same as saying if a boy wears a dress he is really a girl. Exactly the same. Why can’t they see that?!

Just let everyone wear whatever the fuck they want.

StoneColdDiva · 28/12/2017 09:36

Given that the extent of Hamilton's largesse runs to him donating a pair of trainers to a charity, I can't see him donating to Mermaids any time soon.
