I have just read this for the second time. The first time was in 2003 around the time of her death. Part of the novel comprises letters the protagonist, a novelist, writes to various men who have written articles about the "greatest authors" etc - these lists are always comprised of male names, women are ignored.
And since then I've been thinking about how often I encounter situations that would warrant a similar letter. And tonight an example is the Graham Norton show - not a single woman on it - just grey haired males, and a younger one, and not a single woman. And if there was she's be glamorous, because that's how women are supposed to dress. How fucking depressing.
