www.newshub.co.nz/home/sport/2017/11/transgender-weightlifting-laurel-hubbard-named-new-zealand-s-commonwealth-games-team.html

Yes, it's Laurel Hubbard and he will compete in the new 90kg weight category, which was introduced to bring equality with men's weightlifting.

twitter.com/iwfnet/status/779943108721176576
"Technical Rule modification accepted by the IWF EB: the new women bodyweight category is 90kg,+90kg and 75kg,+75kg for youth #genderbalance"

So equal that it's being competed in by a man.

Oh, and the old heavyweight female lifter has been forced to lose 17kg to compete in the

Thank you for posting this, OP.
I live in New Zealand, and I'm so furious about it.
Hubbard, who was a very average male weightlifter, is taking opportunities from stellar female weightlifters by virtue of being a male human biologically and thus having an unfair advantage.
It's infuriating and disgusting, and I'm disappointed in my fellow NZers for being so utterly stupid that they think a male trouncing females at sport is "progressive" Angry

pisacake · 24/11/2017 04:19

Hubbard is getting stronger.

In March he broke the NZ women's record with 123kg snatch, 145kg clean + jerk

In May he set the 'Masters' (35+) women world record with 131kg snatch and 149kg clean + jerk.

He was named 'Women's Grand Master' earning the highest points total (based on the amount he lifted and his age and weight). His points total, 316, was fully 20% ahead of the first actual woman Jo Aita www.instagram.com/joannaita7/

His lift total of 280kg broke the Masters record of Susanne Dandenault by 60kg (27%)

He is only 5kg off the Commonwealth (open) Record of Ele Opeloge, who became Samoa's first Olympic medallist after she was retrospectively awarded the 2008 Olympic silver medal after the silver and bronze medallists were disqualified for doping. And he is 6kg short of the Olympic Bronze medal position in 2016.

The irony is that lots of women are disqualified for testosterone doping while Hubbard is allowed to compete with testosterone levels of up to 10 nmol /l of testosterone, a level which in MEN (let alone women) is still within normal bounds.

He's absolutely taking the piss, but he gets applauded for 'breaking boundaries', and other such bollocks.

Disgusting.

pisacake · 24/11/2017 04:34

He will likely win gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Last time round the competition was won by Maryam Usman, a Nigerian women who took up weightlifting to combat sexual harassment by men. www.vanguardngr.com/2012/03/i-became-a-weightlifter-because-of-men-usman/ She lifted 280kg.

However she may not compete this time, as the Nigerian Weightlifting Federation did not have enough money to send a team to the relevant qualifying competitions. www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1055042/nigerian-weightlifters-fear-may-miss-gold-coast-2018-following-commonwealth-weightlifting-championships-absence

Meanwhile Hubbard is the son of the multimillionaire former Mayor of Auckland.

Hubbard so far has competed in three, and won three open events.

www.iwf.net/results/athletes/?athlete=hubbard-laurel-1978-02-09&id=13974

In all three cases he has beaten the same woman, Iuniarra Sipaia. Samoa is a developing country with a population of only 200,000 with a strong tradition of weightlifting, and limited resources.

He also pushed British weightlifter Emily Campbell out of bronze medal position in her first senior event.

Imagine flying to Australia after years of training to compete in your first senior event only to be denied a medal by a cheating man.

UK Athletics funding (for basic living costs) is contingent on getting in top 8 of world championships. Imagine being denied a living in your sport by a cheating man.

Tis ridiculous and disgusting, an empty win. Meanwhile Hubbard is the son of the multimillionaire former Mayor of Auckland. That explains a lot.

OtterInDisgrace · 24/11/2017 05:05

This makes me so mad. I don’t understand why more people aren’t enraged by it.

TheDowagerCuntess · 24/11/2017 05:16

I'm a kiwi and I'm so, so, so, embarrassed by this.

We have a cheat on the squad, and I hope the wrath of public opinion descends on this person, just as it has recently done on Tony fucking Veitch.

Google him, if you wish to be enraged.

pisacake · 24/11/2017 05:21

He's about to compete in the World Championships. www.iwf.net/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2017/11/2017_Anaheim_Entries_by_cat_v2.pdf

He has submitted an entry of 280kg. This means he's not allowed to start with lifts of less than 265kg, so he's obviously confident.

9 countries have been banned from the World Championships for testosterone doping. North Korea are further unable to unattend due to sanctions. This excludes the first place (333kg), second (325kg), third (298kg) and fifth (292kg) place competitors from the last world championships.

Leaving only Chitchanok Pulsabsakul (4th last time, with 296kg) above Hubbard.

So he's likely to be a World Championship medallist shortly. Could even be gold.

Weird. And people think this is ok

WeatherDependent · 24/11/2017 05:43

It makes me so cross, how can this even be? She was born a man and is systematically tearing down all the records made by woman who were born as such. It’s so wrong on all levels.

Can they not have a new Transgender category?

Vitalogy · 24/11/2017 05:45

I suppose if the women all got together and refused to compete they'd be no competition, so it's a win win for them either way.

I don't really think there should be a transgender category. Gender and weightlifting don't mix. This is about sex. I will happily accept Caster Semanya but not this.

MrsJamin · 24/11/2017 05:58

So wrong. Not progressive in any way.

BigDeskBob · 24/11/2017 06:08

I'm sick of being told that MTT just want to live their lives quietly and don't want to cause trouble for women. Enough seem to be hell bent on being the centre of attention.

TheDowagerCuntess, I've just google Tony fucking Veitch. Wow, at least the public were outraged. I didn't realise there is such a high rate of domestic violence in nz. Is it about better reporting?

Legitimate cheating in professional sport.

It makes me livid.

HumphreyCobblers · 24/11/2017 06:33

I think winning gold in a competition that people who don't know anything about weightlifting will peak trans many more people. I hope so anyway, as that is the only positive thing that could possible come from such a shit situation.

How must those women feel?

Vitalogy · 24/11/2017 06:34

Testosterone testing. It's still not reinstated, as far as I can tell.

Iris65 · 24/11/2017 06:35

She should definitely not be allowed to compete. Totally unfair.

Can’t believe that a man would transition to win medals though.

DrRisotto · 24/11/2017 06:36

This is a fucking joke. Thanks for throwing women's sports under the bus.. And then a lorry. And then a train.

May50 · 24/11/2017 06:40

This is just awful. Madness. What is the world coming to?

Iris65 · 24/11/2017 06:41

TheDowagerCuntess Just googled Tony Veitch. I am astonished that NZ media have re-employed him, but also at the sentence he received. Disgusting.

Bearsinmotion · 24/11/2017 06:42

I don’t get it. If nothing else surely if there is nothing else at least the same restrictions should apply to everyone who competes in the same event!

I also don’t get the psychology. Does Laura honestly believe the competition is fair and she deserves to win? That her biology doesn’t give her any advantages over other competitors? Or does she recognise it and just doesn’t care?
