Her statement

www.heather-brunskell-evans.co.uk/thoughts/public-statement-to-the-womens-equality-party/

The Women’s Equality Party (WEP) has informed me that three Party Members have alleged that my “conduct” on the BBC Radio 4 Programme the Moral Maze on 15th November 2017 has “promoted prejudice against the transgender community”. The Party is currently giving weight to this allegation. As a Spokesperson for the Policy on Violence Against Women and Girls I have been informed I am under review by the Executive Committee.

The Committee is now examining my public statements including my blogs, social media, and on-line forums. It is also assessing whether I have complied with the Volunteer Agreement which I signed at the beginning of my term of office. If the Committee concludes my views do promote prejudice, I have been told I will be expelled from the Party, subject to any appeal I might make to the Appeals Body whose decision will be final.

At the same time, the Party is completely silent about the “conduct” of a fellow panellist on the Moral Maze, Jane Fae. Fae, a trans woman who transitioned to a feminine identity in middle-age, is a speaker for Mermaids (the charity that supports children to transition). She alleged that the prescription of hormone blockers to delay puberty in girls, or the injection of testosterone at the age of 16, is of no greater social or moral concern than prescribing the contraceptive pill.

There are complex psychological and social reasons why, in a society structured by gender and the sexualisation of girls and young women, there is an unprecedented upsurge of girls declaring they are ‘really’ boys. However, there is no credible science to back the narrative that gender ‘identity’ (rather than biological sex) is innate. Hormone blockers have serious consequences on the body, including the probability of infertility. A substantive number of medical practitioners are extremely worried about this practice (as well as the serious medical interventions that usually follow, such as surgical removal of breasts) but daren’t speak out for fear of accusations of transphobia.

I joined the Women’s Equality Party because I believed in a political party which would keep at the forefront the rights and safety of girls and women. Through the example of the Moral Maze, the Party has demonstrated it shares similar approaches to transgenderism and to girls and women’s rights as other political parties: it has not questioned Fae’s views whilst rendering my free speech ideologically suspect; it is concerned to protect the trans community rather than the swathes of girls who are increasingly subject to harmful medical practices.

I refute that I have promoted prejudice against the trans community either on the programme or through my writing and social media. I have called for transparent public debate, without fear of reprisal, of the social, psychological and physical consequences of the narrative that children can be born in ‘the wrong body’.

I don't do twitter either but I went onto her website and sent her a personal email of thanks and support.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 21/11/2017 16:47

You can use Twitter on different accounts from one phone app, or from different browsers on a laptop.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 21/11/2017 16:54

Thanks for twitter advice, I’d have to log out and in to swap between the two wouldn’t I?

I use the iphone Twitter app & it lets me just switch between my two accounts.

ArcheryAnnie · 21/11/2017 16:55

WitchBitch that's a great idea, so i just did it too. Thanks!

LineysRum · 21/11/2017 16:59

"transgender children" is a new category constructed by adult transactivists to serve a political aim

I agree with Lang, and Heather. This is a shameful episode in children's history.

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 21/11/2017 17:07

I’m astonished. We are being bullied & silenced for a reasonable & informed POV.

Ekphrasis · 21/11/2017 17:10

Oooh does it empress?! shall investigate...

Badgerthebodger · 21/11/2017 17:26

Done, signed up to Twitter just for this and so I can support other voices speaking out.

Badger
PM me and I will give you my twitter handle. Loads of fab women who I am following, that you can follow. Don't do it too fast though because twitter locks you out (thinks you are a bot)

I agree that twitter is great for this. Many classic liberal thinkers are in support of GC feminism. In fact, they take a bit of time to persuade because they can't believe how bonkers things have become. So don't stay in the followers echo chamber but go looking for people who could be interested

Thanks that’s great. I have also badgered (arf) my MP but he is really coooool and liberal and won’t engage. If I am well enough in a few weeks after some surgery I’m having I hope to try and attend one of the MPs surgeries and see if I get any better luck face to face. I’ve got DH on board, he’s very wtf about the whole situation and is telling his friends.

Ekphrasis · 21/11/2017 20:58

Wow empress thanks! Been unfollowing lots on one and following on the new one. So easy!

BalloonDinosaur · 21/11/2017 22:57

Totally off topic here, but seeing Heather’s name pop up on here really threw me.

I don’t know anything about her or her politics but I knew her son. A blast from the past.

As you were.

norahnamechange · 23/11/2017 08:12

The Times have an article about her: she has been additionally no platformed by that well known place of education Kings College.

The WEP really are complete waste of space for women. What a disaster.

BlindYeo · 23/11/2017 11:09

Just adding my voice here. I totally support Heather. I cannot believe how far this insanity has gone.

RedToothBrush · 23/11/2017 11:51

TRAs want to abuse and control people who have non conforming gender identity. They want them to behave in 'the correct' way.

If you support rights and protections for the trans community as a whole, then you should be very wary of the methods and influence of TRAs as they are harmful to members of their own community.

The reason there is no debate allowed, is not because of transphobia, but because of political power. The WEP walked straight into that one, with a total lack of critical thinking and understanding of politics.

Which is kinda of shit for a political party. The WEP is by no means alone, but yes they do stand out because of their lack of awareness of the particular political and social implications for women and children over this decision.

GrowlingJaguar · 23/11/2017 14:13

With Heather's noplatforming by King's College, on the topic of pornography and the sexualisation of girls and young women, I'm wondering which other academics who hold a critical view of pornography there are, that the university would consider it safe to invite to speak on the topic?

norahnamechange · 23/11/2017 14:23

Has there been any word from the WEP about this or are they so much in the hands of the TRAs that they don't dare?

It's a brilliant technique - men infiltrate a political party for women in plain sight and then just obliterate it!

BlindYeo · 23/11/2017 14:38

On the strength of this thread and others, I've just written to my MP.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 23/11/2017 15:22

WEP have cared more about transwomen from the start!

They campaigned for violent trans criminal Tara Hudson to be moved to a women's prison, along with the "seven-inch surprise" Tara touted on sex sites. Sophie Walker's reasoning for this was that anyone who identifies as a woman is one.

WitchBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 23/11/2017 17:20

I've been emailing the WEP about this with my concerns.

Their first response was that the amendment was proposed by the previous Government but not published or debated due to the GE being called. "This means that the legislation was dropped and the existing Act remains unchanged for the time being".

I responded stating that the amendments are due to be debated. Their response was "The amendment to the Act was contained in a Bill discontinued because of the elections, so for the time being is not going ahead".

I then pointed out that there is ample info online about the proposed amendments and that Theresa May referred to it at the recent Pink Awards. I gave names of many people stating their concerns about the implications of the proposals and gave names of Janice turner, Miranda Yardley et al.

Their response to this was that no amendment has been tabled and no current consulations are underway. However "If there is a specific aspect of the Act you would like the Party to take a policy decision on then you are welcome to join as a member and submit a motion to Conference".

Blood and stones come to mind.

We have a bloke in support: David Aaronovitch on twitter

"This, to me, is indefensible. It’s about time others spoke out against this authoritarianism."

Nimco Ali (who stood in general election for WEP) has been disagreeing (nicely) with Julie Bindel on twitter about this. I think Nimco is a bit wonderful, on this she seems to be unprepared to consider that you can't keep everyone happy and naice...
