Gender networks vs Women's networks

So, the company I work for has a "Gender network", which was recently launched without much explanation.

I asked for more info and was told "We used to have a women's network, but men complained it was discriminatory so now it's for everyone."

We have other networks - LBGTQ, BAME, one for people with disabilities, which are for those specific groups (i.e. not everybody!), so I'm not sure women is different.

Does anyone work in a company with similar?

Sorry, should have explained further, the reason for asking is that my initial reaction is "That's just ridiculous!" but I wanted to do some more research before discussing it again at work.

I had the same rubbish at my work - I left the network I had previously been very active in (final straw was when there were more men on the management committee of it than there were women - all in the spirit of engaging men).

So simply a Network, then?

What's the point of it?
