Look at this fucking load of nonsense. We are in real trouble when our institutions are pushing an ideological position as scientific fact.

It will not surprise you to learn that Clara Baker is a bloke AngryAngry

Oh, that has made me angry!

It reminds me of Creationist museums/zoos.

AfunaMbatata · 08/10/2017 10:21

Wow Shock wtf is happening?! It’s almost laughable.

SaneAsABoxOfFrogs · 08/10/2017 10:23

How bizarre - in sequential hermaphrodites the organism changes physiological sex. Fine. It's a well documented process. How disappointing that this is being compared to human transgenderism, which does not have the same biological imperative.

BigDeskBob · 08/10/2017 10:25

Grin. "Enough about the fish - let's talk about me"

fruitlovingmonkey · 08/10/2017 10:33

What the fucking fuck?

I can't be any more eloquent about this pile of shit.

FurryGiraffe · 08/10/2017 10:40

Sadly, it doesn’t surprise me particularly. My DH was involved in advising the NHM when they put together a recent exhibition. He was utterly appalled at the quality of the research they were using (ie they appeared to have typed some terms into Google and used whatever random shit it suggested- no assessment of the quality of the science at all- a lot of it was just wrong).

PencilsInSpace · 08/10/2017 10:41

A similar process is thought to be responsible for transgenderism in humans

By whom? Hmm

'The earth is thought to be flat'
'The royal family are thought to be lizards'
'The moon landing in 1969 is thought to have been a hoax'
'The human species is thought to have originated from aliens having sex with monkeys'

Shame on the Natural History Museum for promoting this bilge! No wonder the level of scientific literacy in this country is so pitifully low Angry

Ereshkigal · 08/10/2017 10:43

We all need to complain. FFS how ridiculous.

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/10/2017 10:44

Would anyone be prepared to tweet them about this? I've never been able to get to grips with Twitter.

LemonRedwood · 08/10/2017 10:45

I’ll believe this when the Natural History Musuem can showcase a human who has spontaneously changed sex organs without surgical intervention.

Gileswithachainsaw · 08/10/2017 10:47

Omfg

Who is meant to have thought that? Given research is being shut down for being transohobic Hmm

Albadross · 08/10/2017 10:47

I would tweet them but I'm sure I'll be rounded on because of what happened yesterday. As did the woman who pulled up the DM when they called it 'The National History Museum'.

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/10/2017 10:47

Dr Clara Baker appears to be a material scientist at Oxford University.

So not a biologist then.

Ktown · 08/10/2017 10:50

I am a meme et of the NHM so they will be receiving an email about this.

Rumandraisin1 · 08/10/2017 10:50

Wtf. It's terrifying how even institutions that are supposed to promote scientific facts are now just promoting an ideology. What chance have kids got who just hear this ideology from all the supposedly trusted institutions (including schools) and when reference to biological sex is being erased?

Unless these fish to go the Fish NHS to get puberty blockers, hormones and SRS it's not really similar, is it?

Is there anyone here who is a biologist who could write an authorative but easy to understand response - either as a petition or for people to use to contact the NHM or whoever funds them?

I remember Giants Causeway at one point having a display about creationism which was given equal credence to the scientific explanation (although it didn't actually replace it) and I think that got removed in the end after an uproar about it.

Whereabouts in the museum is this? I want to have my facts straight first before complaining.

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/10/2017 10:57

@MillicentFawcett can you tell us where you obtained the image you posted please? I've searched the NHM site and can't find anything about this fish.

MillicentFawcett · 08/10/2017 10:59

It was part of a pop up LGBT exhibition

BoreOfWhabylon

I saw this exhibit being discussed on Reddit yesterday and it was supposed to have come from an LGBT pop up at the NHM - I’d be checking the veracity though as there was much vagueness about where the exhibition actually was...

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/10/2017 11:19

Thanks terryleather. I think the thing to do is contact NHM asking if this bollocks is being promulgated by them.

terryleather · 08/10/2017 11:26

I think that’s a good idea Bore, absolutely nonsense propaganda like this needs to be challenged but I’d want to have my facts straight before I weighed in.

I lurk on the GC reddit a lot, it’s mostly US posters though so the coverage of UK based things can be a bit skew whiff sometimes!

nauticant · 08/10/2017 11:27

Yes, my gut feeling response triggered my brain to go "OK, that's rubbish, who put it up, where, and in what context?"

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/10/2017 12:04

FOUND IT!!!

It's in the Museum of Natural History, Oxford University
