Can't seem to make it a working link sorry.

Or maybe I can!

Julie is awesome. Great that has been picked up by the BBC

MyFishGeorge · 02/10/2017 21:15

I think it's the first time I've seen abolition as an option described in a mainstream media article. It would so be my preferred option.

Good for her for speaking out. I'm especially tired of seeing lefty bros spouting the happy hooker myth.

QuentinSummers · 02/10/2017 21:23

I'm expecting an influx of posters telling us it's a great job shortly Hmm

PricklyBall · 02/10/2017 21:43

Oh, thanks for starting this thread - I was about to post a link to this. Excellent article and as you say, so glad to see an article in the mainstream press favouring the Nordic approach. (I too await the influx of lefty dude-bros, p*nters etc telling us how wonderful it is). The bit about legalised brothels insisting the women agree to "all-inclusive" deals where they no longer get any say in what sex acts they will perform and which they can refuse is particularly chilling.

Lottapianos · 02/10/2017 21:46

Great article, thanks for sharing. The 'all inclusive' deal idea is sickening, if not surprising

MyFishGeorge · 02/10/2017 21:50

Just been looking up Julie Bindel. Wow she is so coherent and strong in interviews.

Or that she wasn't a prostitute or she is making it up.

DeleteOrDecay · 02/10/2017 23:16

Really good article thanks for sharing.

Lottapianos · 03/10/2017 08:14

MyFish, I totally agree. She's a great speaker, really clear and inspirational. I think she's actually much better in a spoken interview than in print

hackmum · 03/10/2017 09:13

I heard Julie Bindel on Woman's Hour last week talking about her new book - she was brilliant. So articulate and cogent, but also calm and measured.

Very pleased to see the BBC run this article.

MadamMinacious · 03/10/2017 09:14

I'm so please to see this article. It makes a change from the happy hooker line trotted out frequently (and which can't possibly be the norm). It seems obvious to me that decriminalising prostitution leaves the door open for women being harmed more as prostitution is further commercialised - seen here in the nauseating 'all inclusive deal' or in Germany's mega brothels - the thought of which just about knocks me sick.

I'm sure a lot of people on here have already come across them but just in case you haven't and want to read www.newstatesman.com/politics/2015/02/if-you-think-decriminalisation-will-make-prostitution-safe-look-germanys-mega

s.telegraph.co.uk/graphics/projects/welcome-to-paradise/

Decriminalisation just allows pimps and brothel owners to make girls into commodities to a greater extent than they are now. They end up with even less autonomy over how and what they sell and become almost part of a fast food version of prostitution and they will be undercut by chains who offer girls at cheaper rates. Decriminalisation is a horror show in my opinion. But as someone said above, no doubt the influx of people 'who work in the industry' or who know many girls who work there will come and tell me how wrong I am.

FTR - (for those people in advance) you won't change my mind on this, my views aren't a knee-jerk reaction to anything they are the product of years of reading, speaking to people and careful consideration so don't even bother.

MyFishGeorge thank you for posting the article it was good to read.

Julie Bindel's book continues to get pretty good reviews.

From mainstream media publications, no less.

I’m so glad for this board.

I too am so sick of the lefty bros and the cool girls saying that prostitution is empowering in any way.

QueenLaBeefah · 03/12/2017 17:37

There was a very powerful documentary called Mega Brothels filmed in Germany. It is very disturbing and why capitalism shouldn't play top trumps with women's basic human rights.

cuirderussie · 03/12/2017 20:51

Rachel Moran's book is excellent too. She got the predictable backlash from people calling her a liar, and actually hunted down the policeman who raided a Dublin brothel she was working in aged sixteen, and interviewed him on TV. It was quite touching; he had been shocked and upset to find a sixteen year old in a brothel and was delighted to see her doing so well in life. But depressing that she had to go to such lengths to silence the doubters.

scrabbler3 · 03/12/2017 21:02

I used to be one of those liberals who favoured legalising prostitution. Then, my best mate had a baby daughter and I realised at some point that I would not be at all happy if she went in for it. So, I was advocating legalised whoring for "other people's" daughters but it wasn't good enough for my best mate's. That made me realise that it isn't good for anybody.

WhatWouldGenghisDo · 03/12/2017 22:13

How can "all-inclusive" possibly be legal even if sex work is fully decriminalised? It does away with even a pretence of consent!

BadenBadenBadenBaden · 03/12/2017 22:15

cuirderussie which programme/channel was that on?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 03/12/2017 23:02

cuirderussie which programme/channel was that on?

I think it was this one. It was revolting.

She linked the clip on her Twitter page, not sure what the programme was.

(I think Lass is referring to a different post)
