So seems as good a time as any to share this.

Excellent post Bananas. Sadly you'll never convince some people to move on from 'they knew what they were doing and they were all being paid'. Yeah, poor Hugh, he was the exploited one really Hmm

Maudlinmaud · 28/09/2017 18:04

The girlfriends have been notoriously cagey about what it all involved. One wrote a scathing tell all biography a few years ago, down the rabbit hole I think it was called. I didn't read it but saw some extracts, her experiences where not pleasant by any means. She did seem to have genuine feelings for the man but he treated her with contempt.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 28/09/2017 18:05

But even if you put aside all that stuff about prostitution and vulnerability and assume they were all happy bunnies, it is still about the larger picture. Old men perving on young women / girls and paying them to perform. It sends out a message to our girls that their looks are the most valued thing about them. That their looks are their capital.

And if anyone thinks that's a bit snowflakey and reading too much into it just look to the right and read the recent report by the Girl Guides on the effect of gender stereotypes on girls today. This kind of stuff is harmful.

I remember seeing a cover of Playboy over 30 years ago and thinking "is that what men want from us?". I felt that as a girl. Girls still feel like that today. It's still happening and it still affects us.

QuentinSummers · 28/09/2017 18:17

Has there been any claims that he forced any women to do things. Nope. They did it because they wanted to
Well yes actually there have been claims he gave girls sedatives he called "thigh openers". There were quaaludes, the same thing Bill Cosby gave his victims. There is some suggestion he was involved with some of CCosbys assaults.

I don't get why we are celebrating him at all. Meghan Murphy nailed it in R4 this morning

Slimthistime · 28/09/2017 18:22

Rita "But even if you put aside all that stuff about prostitution and vulnerability and assume they were all happy bunnies, it is still about the larger picture"

exactly. And imagine if he had a mansion full of young men.

is the bestiality stuff true?

I hope a lot of truth comes out after his death but people who want to idolise a man like that will still do it.

DeleteOrDecay · 28/09/2017 18:24

Really angry at the way he's being portrayed as some sort of guardian angel in the media. He was a disgusting, seedy, creepy man and I am glad he's dead. One less predatory male in the world.

Nearly blew my top when I read this quote from the article Quentin posted

Women are sex objects. If women weren’t sex objects, there wouldn’t be another generation. It’s the attraction between the sexes that makes the world go ’round. That’s why women wear lipstick and short skirts.”

Just what?? How can anyone like this man? How is it okay to talk about women in this way?

I despair at the amount of people out there celebrating his life I really do. He was 'lucky' enough to live his life as the ultimate male fantasy at the expense of many many women and for some reason that is to be celebrated rather than condoned.

Imagine if he was a woman, he'd be called all sorts of horrible names.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/09/2017 21:30

There was a women speaking about him on the radio today (R5), an independent journalist who had written for playboy and stayed at the mansion. She was insisting that objectification was not specifically an issue for women and was making the same point about attraction. About how men and women objectify each other as a part of attraction. I was surprised she couldn't see the difference between attraction and objectifying.

OlennasWimple · 28/09/2017 21:35

He was a pervert hiding in plain sight

All the stuff about supporting Roe vs Wade - well, pregnant bunnies don't make much money, do they....?

cuirderussie · 28/09/2017 23:00

This is a Playboy cartoon from 1964. Caption is the doctor telling the mother that someday this (her little girl sprouting rabbit ears and a tail) could turn out to be useful someday. There are no words. comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/dink-siegel-american-1910-2003-playboy-cartoon-illustration-page-138-march-1964-mixed-media-on-board-11-x-9-in/a/7017-93071.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515

cuirderussie · 28/09/2017 23:08

I was going to post it on social media but was worried it might be actually illegal. But no, there it is, a horrible creepy paedo cartoon for auction on a "respectable" graphic art auction site.

Slimthistime · 29/09/2017 00:07

I don't think i get it
The doctor turned the little girl into a bunny girl at her mother's request?!

AssassinatedBeauty · 29/09/2017 00:28

No, the child is spontaneously growing a rabbit tail and ears. Rather than offer ways to remove the unusual growths the (creepy) doctor approves and points out that these extra appendages will "useful" in a few years time when the girl has grown up. So she can become a playboy bunny.

annandale · 29/09/2017 05:25

The man was lovely to journalists and paid writers well, resulting in a good press.

You could argue that the prostitutes he procured were well paid for the industry, I suppose. For a pimp he seems to have been quite benign.

What an epitaph.

SophoclesTheFox · 29/09/2017 07:31

That cartoon is horrific.

Someone put up a picture on my facebook feed with a picture of a man with a beard and turban, a crazed look on his face, with the caption "If I martyr myself there'll be 70 virgins in heaven waiting for me", next to a picture of Hefner saying "Better hurry up".

Don't honestly know what the most repellent part about that was. Instant cull.

As for Hefner, meh, he's dead. I don't ever celebrate anyone dying, as I'm sure it's sad for his loved ones, but having one less lecherous old pimp selling women's objectification in the world doesn't make me a bit sad.

QuentinSummers · 29/09/2017 09:08

I was surprised she couldn't see the difference between attraction and objectifying.
Coincidentally posted about tgis on another thread. It surprised me how difficult many people find distinguishing attraction from be having like a sex pest....

Marvellous! Thanks Quentin. Love a bit of Julie Smile

Elendon · 29/09/2017 14:17

'I wished I believed in hell' is such an apt quote.

His legacy to me will be a sexist scumbag.

Tell us what you really think Julie. Grin

Give it 50 years or so and people will look back in horror at the Playboy Mansion and how a man was revered the world over for running a glorified brothel.

TBH I'm shocked that people today think it's acceptable. He literally lined up women in his room and had each of them have a 'go' on him whilst the rest watched or performed sex acts for him. As if that is a perfectly healthy and normal way to treat women. But hey as long as they're 'up for it'Hmm.

Had a discussion with a family member about it and all he could say to defend it was "the girls are consenting, they're happy to take the cash and Playboy is very successful" oh right so it doesn't matter how seedy, exploitative and immoral something is as long as it makes lots of money.

He has contributed to the problems we have today with porn and objectification of women and girls. This has had an effect on me and will probably effect my dd's as they grow up and I despise him for that.
