Pockets!!

My DS has been bought lots of clothes, we didn't find out the sex and also didn't have a baby shower so a lot of the clothes are gifts after he arrived and are incredibly gendered, although are lovely to have.

My gripe is that he has pockets in everything that isn't a sleep suit. Tiny dungarees with pockets, trousers with pockets and even t-shirts with a tiny breast pocket. These are obviously very useful for all the teeny tiny accoutrements a baby is required to carry Hmm

But what about meeee?! I spend a very small proportion of my life looking for practical clothes and I still have trousers and jackets with FAKE POCKETS or just completely missing or just as tiny as DS's pockets!! Gives me the rage Angry

Spudlet "I have to either wear a jacket or strap the damn thing to my arm or leg, where I could easily lose it, or land on it if I fall off."

that would happen with a pocket though.

I have a magnetic fastening pouch for my phone when out running - I wouldn't feel happy with the phone bouncing in a pocket anyway to be fair. Would one of those pouches be any use to you? It might stop the worry of losing the phone? It's magnetic and made of net/mesh/fabric and the phone is in a case. Sounds like overkill now I've said that....

Spudlet · 11/09/2017 17:09

Not if it was a proper pocket with a zip though. A practical, useful pocket is surely what you should be able to expect from a piece of clothing designed for a practical purpose?

Not to be embittered, but DH rode for a while and he has jods, and Hey have a pocket with a zip. Across Europe, female participation levels range from 63% (Italy) to 94% (Finland (source: www.worldhorsewelfare.org/Removing-the-Blinkers). But even then, the blokes get better pockets than we do!

Slimthistime · 11/09/2017 17:13

Spudlet, that link doesn't lead me anywhere but anyway....

Falling over running/riding, we could take a hit anywhere? Having the phone in a zipped pocket wouldn't stop us landing on it? It makes the phone secure, yes, but the chances of breaking it don't change.

the main reason mine is heavily padded is I have had injuries and at least if I don't squash the phone I can call for help!

Spudlet · 11/09/2017 17:19

Oh really? Sorry about the link. But anyway - my point is that we shouldn't have to be buying extra little gizmos to work around a problem caused my our clothes not being designed for the purpose they're sold for, be that walking, running, riding or whatever. It's daft that in a female dominated sport, the men's clothes are still better than the women's, and flipping silly that we are having to spend extra money to make up for these deficiencies. Be they jodhpurs-related or otherwise Smile

Spudlet · 11/09/2017 17:21

Also, thanks for the recommendation, I do have a couple of phone holder widgets, and they do work. I'm just annoyed to have to have one, iyswim?

Slimthistime · 11/09/2017 17:25

Spudlet, I do see what you mean, it's just my joggers do have pockets, but I still need the phone holder and I know guys who use one.

sorry, I've drifted way off point.

if they start doing men's sports gear with padded integrated phone holders then I will be even more annoyed! Grin

maybe I should look in the men's section next time I buy joggers though, perhaps there's a whole planet of better secured pockets that I don't know about. I'm now wondering if men's jeans have bigger pockets....

Lancelottie · 11/09/2017 17:28

Where are you shopping? I have pockets on pretty much everything I own (but then I am a notorious scruff).

Agree about the teeny tiny sportswear pockets, though. You might get a single doorkey in at a pinch.

NikiBarbie · 11/09/2017 17:30

Where are you buying your clothes?

Most of my dresses have deep pockets and I'd actually rather they weren't there as the fabric from them adds extra bulk to your hips and make you look wider.

OlennasWimple · 11/09/2017 17:32

I agree that things seem to be changing - the last 4 or 5 dresses that I have bought have all had pockets, including very casual ones and quite smart.

Perhaps it's an upside to everyone "needing" to have a phone with them all the time? whatever the reason, long may it continue!

GlitteryGlitter · 11/09/2017 17:33

My wedding dress had pockets! I love a pocket!
Gives me the rage when I don't have pockets, I had a lovely pocket filled work wardrobe but my post baby curves no longer fit them and I've not found anything new with pockets to replace them with SadSadSad

Waddlelikeapenguin · 11/09/2017 17:52

This is so true with kids clothes, I sew most of my kids clothes & even the patterns keep to this nonsense.
I rairly sew jackets & the difference between an 8 yr old "boy" jacket (6 pockets 2 zipped) & 8 yr old "girl" jacket (3 pockets no zips) is crazy.

I do think there is a fabric choice issue too though - putting pockets in stretch fabric can cause problems (or does when my kids add to their rock collections Hmm) & men rairly have the option of oh so comfortable stretch jersey trousers.

massi71 · 11/09/2017 18:19

I wear mens skinny cargo pants from river island.

I found them while looking for something else.

They are fanfuckingtastic. Thick fabric and sooo many decent pockets. On some of them I've cut the ribbed cuffs off and hemmed them. On others I've left them. For reference I'm 5'2 and size 12 and they fit perfectly.

Slimthistime · 11/09/2017 18:49

massi, I was about to say I can't wear skinny - but I can wear those!!

so men also aren't expected to have stick thighs to fit into their combats!!

thanks.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/09/2017 21:27

I'm quite often surprised at the amount of stuff men and women shove into pockets and just think that can't possibly be secure/safe.

I like pockets on skirts and dresses but I would not put anything more than a hanky or a pen in them.

I never put anything in the pockets of tailored coats or jackets as it does spoil the line and the shape and will eventually tear the pocket lining. My husband really disliked putting stuff in the pockets of his suits and finally succumbed to a man bag for the this reason.

On the security side I think the Radley "pocket bag" range beats hands down putting anything in an actual pocket. Slim , cross body bags in a range of sizes, lots of different sections of where to put things depending on how accesible/how safe you want things to be.

RooKangaroo · 12/09/2017 09:23

Fat Face for dresses with pockets!

Agree that most pockets on women's clothing are particularly big or secure, but just for putting your phone in while you walk round the office, or your keys while you go to the car - all of these make a bit of a difference.

Slimthistime · 12/09/2017 11:30

Lass, when security was mentioned on this thread I think most of us meant stuff not at risk of falling out of your pocket, so we'd like more zipped pockets.

the whole point of wanting more pockets is to avoid carrying a bag around.

I don't care about spoiling the lines of my not posh clothes, I want to be able to carry phone, keys - many sets of keys when at work - tissues, meds, small bottle of water even (for a big coat pocket), money etc. Hat, gloves in winter might need to be carried esp on Tube etc.

I was just looking at my lightest winter coat and actually the pockets are pretty well reinforced which is good. I'm really curious now to see how well men's pockets are reinforced.

Spudlet · 12/09/2017 11:59

I think there's a difference between 'fashion' type clothing (by which I would mean skirts, dresses, skinny jeans and so on) and practical clothing (like walking trousers etc). I don't look for huge pockets and so on in fashion clothes because I want them to look nice first and foremost. But for practical clothes, I want them to be practical, which means, among other things, decent secure pockets. But all too often, women's fit clothing won't include that. Which is bloody stupid, imo.

My practical winter coats are all fairly well served in pocket terms, although maybe it's telling that the best one in pocket terms I s a men's wax jacket. But I would also like pockets in practical summer clothes. I do not wish to have to carry a handbag across the fields at any time of year!

Elendon · 12/09/2017 12:15

Maybe this will solve the problem (though I'm not sure about putting my laptop in the place they suggest - or the shoes!)

Elendon · 12/09/2017 12:18

Though how it gets past security is a problem and I'd want my phone, passport, boarding passes and cards to hand. plus a moisturiser

Twelvety · 12/09/2017 12:27

Yes you'd have to remove a lot of it to put it through separately at security which would be a bit of a faff, but not much more than having to take your electronics out of your bag? I don't know.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 12/09/2017 22:30

The multi-pocketed trench coat, complete with a double-breasted style, adjustable waist belt and epaulets, features 18 hidden pockets that can carry all of your travel essentials including two mobile phones, a digital camera, an iPad, and a water bottle

Rummaging in (and trying to remember which of) 18 different pockets you put something in?

Yes, that sounds so much more convenient than carrying a bag.!

slightlyglittermaned · 12/09/2017 22:46

It sounds fab. I suspect that I'd figure out a pattern for most stuff - phone always in one pocket, keys kept in another, and so on.

EBearhug · 12/09/2017 22:51

It's clear you are not a fan of pockets, Lass, but a lot of people are, and what we want is the choice. If a pair of trousers or a skirt or jacket comes with pockets, you are not obliged to use them, but if they aren't there, you're denied the option.

I don't have a problem with carrying a small rucksack as hand luggage (though I have been tempted to go and kick people who pull a wheely cabin case through a crowded airport with no awareness of all the other people whose ankles they're taking out...) So I doubt I'd go for that coat. Can fit a fair bit in my existing coat pockets, though.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/09/2017 03:16

My current jeans have fake front pockets, so in 2 back pockets I've got an enormous bunch of keys, a pager and tissues. Plus another set of keys and pager attached to my waist thank fuck the jeans have belt hooks 2 more pockets would make sitting down so much more comfortableGrin
