Pockets!!

My DS has been bought lots of clothes, we didn't find out the sex and also didn't have a baby shower so a lot of the clothes are gifts after he arrived and are incredibly gendered, although are lovely to have.

My gripe is that he has pockets in everything that isn't a sleep suit. Tiny dungarees with pockets, trousers with pockets and even t-shirts with a tiny breast pocket. These are obviously very useful for all the teeny tiny accoutrements a baby is required to carry Hmm

But what about meeee?! I spend a very small proportion of my life looking for practical clothes and I still have trousers and jackets with FAKE POCKETS or just completely missing or just as tiny as DS's pockets!! Gives me the rage Angry

In regards to historical dress, women's pockets were always a separate item of clothing. It was literally a pocket on a waist strap which was tied around the waist underneath the top skirt which had matching slits for the wearer. I watched a shirt video on how eighteenth century ladies dressed and how much help they needed too!
I despair at the lack of functional pockets in modern clothes!

MurielsBottom · 11/09/2017 09:39

And there are days when I resent having to use a handbag but I have little alternative. It really grates on me.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 11/09/2017 09:39

Ffs.
The rage for years. H&M have got jersey dresses with pockets for 12.99. You are most welcome.
I hate having to be made aware every time I strap it on fnarr fnarr Grin that I'm still too fat .
I wear aprons in the house for maximum pocketage. Plus it makes me look like I'm busy when in fact I've just loaded up my pockets and settled down with back to back Tim Roth in Tin Star.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 11/09/2017 09:40

Interesting Muriel

Yes this drives me mad, the fake pockets are the worst. I do actually have a couple of pairs of skinny jeans with pockets I can fit my phone in but I have to check before I buy. I've never been a handbag person so it's annoying.

I got a nice coat/jacket from Fat Face which has loads of pockets. Wasn't the cheapest though.

It's an unwritten rule between me and my sisters that if you see a dress you like and then discover it has pockets then you have to buy it. Doesn't happen often though.

Really interesting thread. I do get frustrated with the lack of pockets in gym/running clothes. I have a small belt pocket thing that I use but still

thecatfromjapan · 11/09/2017 12:11

There was a thread in Style and Beauty about this a while back.

I'm delighted to hear that H and M will put pockets into a £12.99 jersey dress. I think one problem is that pockets can add costs (as well as all the irritating cultural assumptions which, I am sure, drive the lack of pockets). Cos are also good for pockets. Sweaty Betty have pockets in many of their leggings.

M and S are demonic for not putting pockets in their cheaper dresses. I'm now boycotting any dresses without pockets.

It so totally is a feminist issue, as can be seen, really, by the fact that 'masculinely signified' baby clothes will be smothered with pockets. Wtf is that all about? They can barely hold a spoon but there's a wealth of storage for all the pen knives and compasses and stuff?

Meanwhile, M and S sell clothes for adult women with no pockets because we're all carrying a matching handbag, have a footman to carry our fans, or have no need for cash, pens, stuff, etc.?

Slimthistime · 11/09/2017 12:21

RE fake pockets
I've not come across a totally fake one, only the ones where you need to unpick the seam to actually get to the flipping pocket
That said I have had issues with coat pockets that are so badly made, they get holes in them after a couple of months...I bet that doesn't happen to men's pockets
Next time I buy a coat I will look at men's coats instead

heldoglykke · 11/09/2017 12:39

Don't want to detract from your main point that women's clothing is generally terribly impractical, but a lot of those fake pockets on jackets are actually genuine. They just have a few stitches in the top, so that they hang better and keep their shape on the hanger. As I discovered several years into owning one such item Blush

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 11/09/2017 12:43

Me too Helga. Also the split at the back of coats sewn up. I swished about in my new camel coat for weeks until my mum pointed out that needed to unpick the stitching at the back

Twelvety · 11/09/2017 13:23

I have some high-waisted M&S jeans that have pockets so deep I could probably fit 2 smartphones on each side. I LOVE them.

Spudlet · 11/09/2017 13:28

There are times when ds, who is under 2, has more pockets than me, who is about to turn 35. This is highly irritating. Especially when I want to walk the dog without carrying a coat - I've ended up buying a hideous bum bag for poo bags, treats, phone and keys. Dh can just shove all that, plus his wallet and a sun hat ffs, into his pockets. I want pockets!

Trills · 11/09/2017 13:52

It's not just women's clothing where real pockets come sewn up.

There are "true" fake pockets as well though.

DeleteOrDecay · 11/09/2017 15:01

Nobody said it was just women's clothing, but it's definitely more common with women's clothes. All my dp's trousers and shorts have pockets, he doesn't even have to think twice about it when buying clothes. Me on the other hand I can't even buy clothes online because I can't tell from the picture whether the 'pockets' are real or notAngry

EBearhug · 11/09/2017 15:02

I have a pair of trousers with a fully functioning zip across the pocket, but no pocket behind it. You could maybe get a hairgrip I'm there. I should have checked it better in the shop, but it never occurred to me that someone would go to the effort of sewing in a zip but not bothering to put a pocket behind it.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 11/09/2017 15:34

They are laughing at us , those nasty clothes manufacturers. And then they sell us the bags to Accessorise
I agree it is a feminist issue. Oh and snap Spudlet my bum bag arrived shortly after the dog.

Slimthistime · 11/09/2017 15:47

Spud, did you want to put poo bags in your pockets though? I am probably walking past lots of dog owners who do that without even realising aren't I...?

I miss combats. They were brilliant. Must be due a revival surely?

Spudlet · 11/09/2017 16:08

Yes! But empty ones, I hasten to add! Even I have limits Grin

Spudlet · 11/09/2017 16:32

It's not just fashion-type clothes either. Dh can get a pair of walking trousers with leg pockets that hold an OS map - but I can't. I can get a pair in the same fabric, but the pockets are too small. I had to rip the covers off all my maps to fit them in. And my jodhpurs are equally useless, they have a tiny internal pocket with no zip, so,if I want to take a phone out riding I have to either wear a jacket or strap the damn thing to my arm or leg, where I could easily lose it, or land on it if I fall off. Useless!

Elendon · 11/09/2017 16:38

Phew! Spudlet

I was afraid to ask

Grin
Elendon · 11/09/2017 16:42

I found a great pair of combat style walking trousers in a sale. The reason they were so cheap was, according the sales assistant, was that the pockets were deep. I gave him my one raised eyebrow look. Sadly, they no longer fit shrunk in the wash
